Scott Carson’s anger at Albion axe

Albion goalkeeper Scott Carson has admitted he was angry at the way former boss Roberto Di Matteo axed him from the team.

The former Hawthorns captain was dropped by Di Matteo after a howler at Fulham in January, but has regained his place since the arrival of new boss Roy Hodgson.

And Carson has now revealed he was upset at the way the decision became public, with Di Matteo announcing it two days before the Premier League win against Blackpool.

The goalkeeper said: “I made a mistake against Fulham that was well highlighted with it being live on Sky.

“I don’t know if Robbie had been thinking of leaving me out before then or whether he just wanted to change things around to try to make something happen, but it was disappointing to be left out.

“It wasn’t so much getting dropped that I was angry and upset about, because that’s part of your life if you’re a footballer. It happens now and again.

“If you make a mistake you know it can happen and that’s fair enough. It was the manner in which it was done that I found hard to deal with, the way it was built into a big news story and announced early in the week ahead of the Blackpool game.

“Other lads have been left out of the side and the outside world only finds out when the team-sheet goes in. It’s not made into a big deal, you get told in-house and that’s the end of it.

“It made me feel twice as bad and that did annoy me a little bit, but once it was a bit less raw a few days later I got my head back together and just worked as hard as I could.”

Carson had been in solid form before the weekend’s defeat at home to Chelsea and has praised Hodgson for turning the Baggies’ season around.

The 25-year-old said: “Since the gaffer came in it’s been a fresh start for everyone, people are playing to impress and to get spots in the team and that gives you extra momentum.

“Everyone has something new to prove and, when you add that to ideas and organisation he has brought in, we’ve been able to produce some great performances.”

A goalkeeper, above all the other positions, needs a thick skin and tremendous self belief, because their clangers result in goals usually. Remember that David James rode his ‘Calamity James’ image to become one of the best. Stay focused and astound the moaners.

Scott I think you should just count yourself lucky you were given another chance. You are on borrowed time. Its not the mistakes that worry me as much as the generally average performance we see from you in your ‘better’ games. I’ve never come away from a match thinking Scott Carson won us the points and surely a top class goalkeeper playing in a newly promoted team should be picking up plenty of MOM awards.

There’s been some rubbish talked about Scott Carson this season, not least of it here.

1 – Carson has cost us at least 20 points. So if we had a different keeper we’d be fourth in the table and set fair for Champions League qualification? Who did you want in goal instead, Billy the Fish?

Carson’s time is probably up with us because he appears to have fragile confidence, and that ain’t ever gonna be repaired standing in front of a crowd giving him dog’s abuse after going 2-1 down against Chelsea on the back of a 7 game unbeaten run.

He’s had a poor season but the way some people have reacted to virtually every goal we’ve conceded, apportioning 100% of the blame to Carson and nothing to anyone else, is a joke.

It’s a pity a number of our so called supporters WILL NOT do the same so I can only apologize for their disgraceful behaviour and assure you that the vast majority are true Blue and White and wish you and the rest of the playing and back room staff all the best for the rest of the season and hope it ends up with us playing in the Premier next season.

Number 1 and 7- I reckon he has cost us 10 goals, not even paul robinson positional sense for his entire albion career cost us 20 points, and he cost us a shed load of goals.

Our team has moved on since the days when steve lillwall back headed a ball near the half way line to our goalie and they scored, however we may have replaced the lillwalls, burgess’s and ravens with the olsons, davies and balis’s but we have never replaced the millers and hoults in goal. He’s made mistakes. So has Nicky Shorey, Stephen Reid, Odemwingie, Brunt, Morrison, Olsson, Cech, Fortune… Some people have short memories. What about Everton away? Liverpool at home? Spurs at home? Stoke away?

How about supporting a bloke who’s tried his best for your club instead of booing?

At the very height of the criticism this season, the vast majority of the boo boys couldn’t see the real problem – Roberto’s shocking attitude towards defending as a unit…

    # 7 totally agree mate. A team is made up of 11 players on the pitch. If the defence were doing their job, the ball wouldn’t get through to the goal keeper so much, if the forwards were doing their job, the other team scoring 2 goals wouldn’t be a problem if we were scoring 3. You can’t blame one person for the whole game – well unless you’re a referee then it can be your fault!!!!!!! EVERY member of the team has made a mistake at one time or another (how many own goals have we scored?!?!?!) but beause they’re not the goal keeper it’s forgotten by the next week.
Love him or hate him, he’s the goal keeper for WBA – support him, don’t treat him like opposing supporters would.

Common Sense Baggie Boy- ‘Carson has cost us 20 points this season’- okay list the points he’s cost us, then deduct the points we’ve gained from his saves. What absolute rubbish.

Zorro- ‘One of our worst top flight keepers ever’- we’ve only had about 5 and he’s certainly not worse than Pascal Zuberbuhler.

Like Wear Baggie (excellent post) and many others before, I don’t dispute he’s had a couple of nightmares (which Prem keeper hasn’t?? Hart, Reina, Van Der Sar, Almunia and Gomes all play for much better teams than us and they’ve cost their teams points. Foster, Green, Jaaskelainan, Al-Habsi, Hennessey, Howard and Schwarzer all have too), but the way he’s constantly picked on is ridiculous.

It’s not the constructive criticism that’s a problem, it’s the irrationality of it. We could be playing a game, Odemwingie would lose the ball, Brunt and Thomas would fail to track their men, Shorey would lose his footing, Olsson would dive in then Carson would fumble the shot and some of the odious simpletons that sit in the BRE would blame Carson, then their kids would think it’s acceptable and before you know it you have half the stand hurling abuse at him.

Some might not like Carson as a keeper- fair enough, but for the love of God he’s an Albion player, what good is getting on his case going to do? How many of those people who barrack him remember Tony Lange or Paul Crichton? Or went week-in week-out when things weren’t quite so rosy? Scott Darton anyone…..

Roy said he felt he’d come to a warm club with supporters who support the team, I hope these people don’t convince him otherwise.

We all forget that we are West Brom, a team yoyoing between the top two leagues for the last decade. We are not going to a)attract a top class keeper, b)afford the transfer fee of top class keeper or c)afford the wages of a top class keeper. I am West Brom through & through & see us through rose tinted glasses but I am realistic, West Brom are not as attractive to people outside the club as it is to us. I do believe we are becoming a little more attractive, as evidenced by getting in RH(when was the last time we had an experienced manager). When we are an established Premier league team for several years, we will then be able to attract top class keepers. Unfortunately, if Scott was the finished article & could catch crosses, command his area, etc.etc. do you think he’d be at West Brom. I think not. We both fit each other, the best keeper we can afford, the best team to have bought him & not sent him on loan. Keepers get better with age & experience & I believe Scott will do this. Look at Robinson, playing some of his best games at the moment but he was lost in the wilderness for a long time. Let’s all get behind Scott for as long as he’s at our club.

As in goalkeeping, timing is everything, isn’t it?

    “What Roy needs …”

… seems a great statement to make, though cannot really affect our club’s position until after May 22, and once the transfer window opens.

    “What Roy has …”

… is the more constructive statement at this time, as it is the only one that Roy has any managerial control over.

In Scott’s defence (sic), I disagree with any statements that assert he can’t keep anything out of goal …

… He does seem quite adept at keeping Boaz Myhill out :-)

That’s the best post I’d read for a long time.

Someone used David James as an example the other day.

At 25 (Carson’s age) David James was playing regularly for Liverpool and being publicly criticised for errors he was making which led to goals against. He carried on working on his game and went on to become the benchmark for England goalkeepers. He didn’t actually play for England until he was 27, nor did David Seaman.

Whilst that doesn’t necessarily mean he should remain first choice/become a golden boy, it certainly suggests crucifying his Albion career would be foolish and pathetic.

To also follow on from yesterday. Any Carson-knockers got any sensible alternatives? There were 2 posters who put up a reasoned argument for a replacement last time around.

I was in the Brummie against Chelsea in my usual seat with both my grown up sons who I have been taking to the Albion since they were 5. Yes weve seen some rubbish over the years but we have never and never will boo one of our players. Those that booed our keeper need to take a long hard look at themselves. Is Van Der Sar a bad keeper because he dropped a ball at Tchoyi’s feet? Is Odemwingie a bad striker because he missed an open goal against the Blues?

I don’t think anyone would say they are, and at present we have a good keeper, doing a good job for a good team, for a good manager.

We’re VERY close to being safe for next season, and if we do bring in another keeper and he improves the team and the results, I would be extremely happy. As I pointed out the other day the PL is a different world to the Championship especially for keepers and I don’t think Miller played for us in the PL did he?

Russell Hoult was a fine keeper but played behind a team that relied on not conceding goals by getting 11 men behind the ball. Carson has played behind a team that under RDM defended in a cavalier way and under Tony Mowbray played like Japanese suicide pilots.

If you make comparisons you must take all factors into account otherwise it’s like comparing apples with bananas.

I’m not sure which of your categories I fall into but until you take the above into account I think you need to open a category 4 for yourself and some others. IE Those that criticise Carson without taking account of what’s happening around him.

It looks like MOST of the criticism that Scott Carson gets is over the top.

Other players are as responsible for costing us points/goals and yet they are never criticised. Mulumbu has lost the ball on at four occasions that have DIRECTLY resulted in the opposition scoring, Blackpool, West Ham and Fulham (all away) are three. That doesn’t mean that Mulumbu is bad, just that he made a costly mistake.

Against Stoke, Carson was immense. Along with the rest of the defence they withstood the basketball style bombardment from Delap, and Carsons command of the box in that game contributed to the point.

The thing is, a lot of players had a mediocre game on Saturday. BUT it was against Chelsea. If everyone had been on their game we would not have won. Instead, we should look at hte performance in a different, pragmatic way. A lot if players have been playing excellently until Saturday. Collectively they had a poor performance, in the same game, which means that hopefully, they will collectively up their games for the final matches. We lose too many games where one individual performance or mistake overshaddows the rest of the team. Saturday was a case of “expect nothing, get nothing, don’t get embarrassed”. In those terms, Saturday could turn out to be a good result.

We will never afford world cup winning players, so let’s make do and accept that that football is there for our entertainment, and overall, this season ticket has been excellent value for money.

at the end of the day , yes it is a team game, however sometimes the same player will make mistake after mistake, so how long does it go before it is adressed for the good and benefit of the team by the manager,SC has his reasons for being angry of course, but RDM had his, some times you have got accept a dip in form means being dropped, until such a time when the confidence grows and you are on top of your game(u see loads of players go through it) paul robinson, robert green and yes they are keepers, but i dont agree with the booing, the player should not be put in that position!!!! all im saying is its all part of growing up, take the good with the bad and learn from it, COME ON YOU BAGGIES

51.Daniel. What a wild statement, ‘the worst goalkeeper we’ve ever had’. You must be around 150 years old. I seen all of them since 1944 and can say quite definitely, HE IS NOT! On the WM phone-in last night, I was quietly washing up and listening. One bloke rang and proceeded to say Carson ‘couldn’t catch, couldn’t kick, couldn’t position, couldn’t save….etc’. You have the picture.
He came from ‘a family of goalkeepers’, so he KNEW. I was so incensed I rang WM to let fly at his sheer spiteful, smug, self-opiniated arrogance. This bloke didn’t tell us what Divisions of football his qualifications came from. Probably one I played in back in 1948-9
The Tipton League. We were all brilliant, undiscovered talents of the highest order. Well, usually between 11pm and 7am anyway. ZZZ

Ultimately as fans we all pay good money so are entitled to an opinion. agreed if the player (carson) is going to be playing regularly then we should get behind him, however lets be honest he has not done himself any favours with his performances this season.
For me he clearly lacks bravery and this shows when we defend corners he does not dominate his six yard box. I have lost count of how many goals have been scored from inside this box. He can’t catch hence he don’t come for crosses in outplay or from corners. This then puts unecessary pressure on the defence when they want respite.
For me it’s time for change at the end of the season and we should go and buy a quality keeper like Given at Man City who wants first team football or the lad who’s No2 at Fulham.

Exactly! he was dropped he work hard, impressed Roy got back in the team played well, had a dodgy game along with others, what do we have? instant abuse.
How would you feel if that happened to you at work? would you stick your fingers up or tell those who were abusing you to duck off?
Would it help you and make you determined to try your hardest for your boss and work mates if they patted you on the back and said “come on son forget it let get the job done, we all make mistakes” and don’t forget how many are on his back, like a big cowardly gang picking on somebody who can’t answer back.

    And many others on here.

If you actually read the article and not just the E&S headline that is designed to raise controversy you will see that he never said he was angry at being dropped. He said that he fully accepts that as a footballer it’s part of the job.

What he was upset at was the way it was announced with other people knowing before he did. Imagine you get the sack at work and the first you know is when the office junior or the bloke on the next machine mentions it in conversation.

Also in your post along with many others you mention Carson’s faults and mistakes as if they’re facts. That is your opinion, not a fact. You then go on to question the Manager’s judgement. Do you want him replaced as well?

Perhaps you should take note of your last sentence and learn to take the good with the bad.

I’ve also seen the Carson knockers dredging up the names of former keepers that were better. On Tom Ross last night one even mentioned Rick Sheppard, a decent second string to Ray Potter but no where near Carson’s quality. Tony Godden has been cited as being on a par with Gordon Banks yet at the time he took just as much stick as Carson from a section of our ‘loyal fans.’ He was regularly called Teflon or Dracula to help his confidence but now thirty years later it appears all is forgiven.

    PS WBA78.
I don’t criticise other peoples’s English or grammar but the word is you not YA. I bring this up as you seem to use it deliberately as an affectation. It’s not big and it’s certainly not clever.
