Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Albion’s hard work key to Shorey

Albion defender Nicky Shorey believes ‘hard work’ is the key to Roy Hodgson’s instant impact at the Hawthorns.
The Baggies full-back believes Hodgson has transformed the mentality of the Baggies’ team with hours of graft on the training ground.
And Shorey reckons Hodgson’s thorough approach to training has changed the team’s approach to defending.
The 30-year-old, who played for Hodgson last season during a loan spell from Villa at Fulham, has been recalled to the Albion side since the new boss arrived.
Shorey said: “That’s what the gaffer is all about. We have been putting in the hours on the training pitch and hopefully it’s going to pay off for the rest of the season.
“It’s a case of him getting across what he wants you to do in situations and making sure not only the starting team know what he wants, but everyone in the squad knows from the youngsters all the way to the seniors.
“There are slightly different things that he wants compared to other managers but it’s more about a mentality, and not just for the defenders but for everyone to defend as a whole team.
“We start from the front in terms of where we want to show opponents and it’s about getting that mentality into all the players rather than just the defenders.”
Shorey made his mark on Saturday’s famous win over Liverpool with a crucial goalline clearance in the final moments to clinch the 2-1 success after Luis Suarez’s superb lob threatened to rescue a point.
The former England international revealed he took a blow for his troubles.
He said: “I got clattered by my own team-mate, Jonas Olsson, but we kept it out and that’s the main thing.
“I was just glad to get the win. Everyone was doing their bit and it was nice to get that one off the line.”
