Scott Carson recall a boost for boss

Albion boss Roy Hodgson has claimed Scott Carson’s latest England recall will boost the goalkeeper’s confidence after his roller-coaster start to 2011.

Carson was back on the England bench last night, less than three months after being dropped from the Albion team by former boss Roberto Di Matteo.

And Hodgson, who has recalled Carson to the starting line-up in place of Boaz Myhill, reckons his return to the international fold in place of an injured Ben Foster can only aid his mental rehabilitation.

The head coach said: “I’m sure it’s good for his confidence. Whether you’re actually in the team or just in the squad, being selected for England is a big occasion so I’m sure he’s delighted with that.

“We were happy to wish him well on his journey there and it’s always nice when you get call-ups for your players, especially for important matches.”

However, Hodgson admitted losing players to international duty was a headache for club managers with the risk of injury and disruption to daily training plans.

He said: “You lose control and every time you lose control it’s not an ideal situation.

“The other thing that is difficult is that you have so few players and that has been exacerbated by injuries to the younger players.

“Normally we have had Kayleden Brown, George Thorne and James Hurst training with the first team in these periods and we have invited people like Cameron Gayle and Sam Mantom to join us, so we would have had 12-16 players.

“Suddenly we lost all of them because Hurst and Thorne went off to England under-19s and Brown would have gone off with Wales if he hadn’t been injured.

“Mantom got injured then we find ourselves struggling to get 10 players.

“You want to do some serious work with them but if you’re not careful the intensity is so high that you end up bashing those 10 players more than the ones on international duty, who will be doing half the work.”
