Roy Hodgson defends striker Fortune

Roy Hodgson defends striker Fortune

Albion head coach Roy Hodgson has leapt to the defence of Marc-Antoine Fortune after the striker was cast as the Baggies’ derby-day villain.

Fortune missed a glorious second-half chance against Wolves at the Hawthorns yesterday, ensuring a tense end to the game before substitute Carlos Vela pounced in stoppage time to give the Baggies a 1-1 draw.

But boss Hodgson praised the player, who was criticised by sections of the Albion fans after several opportunities went begging, including one chance in front of goal when he failed to control the ball.

He said: “It is unfortunate for him because he did a very good job for the team. His target play was excellent, as was his selfless running and his work off the ball.

“All the things which don’t often get noticed like they should put him in a very good category.

“What is going to be remembered are the one or two chances he did well to get into position for but didn’t put away.

“I would say to him after the game ‘I thought you did a good job for the team’ and ‘be happy with you performance.’

“But he is anything but happy because he wants to score goals and he realises the fans will only judge him on goalscoring.”

Hodgson and his players returned to work today to begin preparations for next Monday’s trip to Stoke.

And the Hawthorns boss has admitted his players must adapt quickly to his methods in order to stave off relegation in the final 11 matches of the season.

He said: “I’m learning as I go along and I’m aiming to learn very quickly. I’m also hoping desperately the players will learn very quickly, because we don’t have the time.

“I’ve said to them ‘it’s no good us playing pretty football and looking like a good team in the middle of April, because that might be too late.’

“We’ve got to do it straight away and I thought yesterday there were a lot of encouraging signs.

“But I’m still looking forward to the time I’m going to get with them on the training field where we need to hone up a lot of what we do.

“I’ve been encouraged by what I’ve found.”

The Baggies have 11 games to save their season and midfielder Paul Scharner has set them a target of four wins to beat the drop.

He said: “We need a minimum of four. Four and a draw maybe. But we can stay up.

“We have 11 games left and there are enough points to survive.

“I am quite sure we have to fight until the end of the season.”

I was gutted we couldnt hold on at the weekend but fair credit to WBA who never stopped trying.

I would also add though that 4 wins from your last games is hard. Fixtures are not great!

I hope both Wolves and WBA stay up to be honest but cant see it, maybe both going down. Blackpool are also very much on course for the drop.

Fortune is a bad player. I’ve said this from day 1 he’s slow, he’s weak and he is no way a striker. OK he’s got a decent shot on him but he’s just awful

I was baffled by all the substitutions – Brunt, Scharner and Fortuné were our worst players and all were still on the pitch at the end.

Rich5Wolves – So refreshing to hear someone talk sense on these blogs instead of just slagging the other team off. I thought it was a great match, and that overall a draw was a fair result. The first 20 minutes we didn’t have a look in. The turning point was the Jarvis miss in the 2nd half. I hope we both stop up but I think one of us will go down, along with Wigan and Blackpool.

PS So nice to see NO yellow cards in a derby!

Totally agree with you rich5wolves. No one could say we were not worth at least a point, albeit in my opinion, the game was pretty poor. No reflection on Roy Hodgson, as he hasn’t had time to make his mark yet. Whose idea was it to bring the overated MAF back to the club? can’t he go back to Mowbray, now at Middlesbrough. Him, like one or two others are just going through the motions and quite content to pick up their pay packet for doing very little.
At least the saving grace is, if we do go down? there will be a MAJOR clearout at the Hawthorns in the summer, so that’s something to look forward to.
I’ve a sneaky feeling about the Stoke game? Law of averages says we are due a win.

Also like to note, Chris Brunt was woeful, he got man of the match at ground, voted by the fans I can only think 5 people voted and 3 were his relatives, am awful captain, no form, no passion, moody, overated…

Jonas Olsson was immense, get him captaincy!

Being a striker at this level aint easy – I agree MAF probably aint good enough – but compare him with Doyle who everyone raves about and its hard to choose who is worse…..

Strikers are always just one kick or bounce off the shin from being the hero – or one mis-control from being the villan….we need to support all our players every game till the end of the season.

I still think the current bottom three will go down – and we will finish above Blackpool !!

Fortuné is not a striker, he’s a worker and playmaker. He gets in good positions to score but for reasons I can’t see, his balance is not there at the crucial moment. (Read ‘Manual for Poachers’ by K.Phillips, foreword by T.Brown). He did ‘put in a good shift’ (Read ‘Football and Bus Parking’ by MicMac). Some of the comments about players being ‘woeful’ are grossly unfair. Some of the Wulfie tackling was frighteningly efficient added to a few threats they offered early on with pushing and pulling and then 2 or 3 of them qualifying as Dutch windmills, arms swiping anything going past. It was NOT a game for the purist, very little to pass on to the kids as football folklore, in fact, rather scrappy. But much was at stake. We should remember that. The ‘blame’ culture helps no one.

As the law of averages is going Wolves should go down as they don’t do too well against lower half opposition hence their current position(Bottom).

In saying that I feel if we don’t get a win at either Stoke or Blues then it will make it very tough indeed for us.

I can just see low score games from now on as the defence looks to be sorted out which will slow down the attack. But if you don’t concede then you don’t lose!

Saw the game on Scandinavian television. We played poorly. The late equaliser didn´t comfort me that much. The writing is on the wall. Fortune absolutely useless together with Jara, Scharner, Tamas, Brunt, Odemwingie and Brunt. Shorey and perhaps Olsson had decent games. But clearly we are lucky if staying up with this bunch of jokers. I don´t blame Roy. Maybe best scenario would be getting relegated. I have thought about this carefully. If we somehow manage to survive, I doubt us to get rid of the 10-15 or so players who let us down week in week out. Imagine a new season in the Premier League with 8 or 9 of the same same players in the starting eleven. Depressing, isn´t it? Give me relegation and a big exodus of underperforming primadonnas. Let the big spring clean-up begin. Build a new team around youth and British players.

OK so MAF was poor but come on lets look at the bigger picture, i.e the other 10 players on the pitch. For a derby and a game as crucial as yesterdays I never saw one scrap of passion, desire or urgency throughout the entire Albion team, I screamed myself horse in frustration at how poor we were on such a big occasion. If they cant raise their game against our biggest rivals then when else will they do it. Thank god we got a point out out of it which was more than we deserved following a better second half performance. However, what I witnessed yesterday was 2 very very poor sides, and as much as I hate to admit it, I cant see either staying up this season if improvements from yesterday dont come fast!

Odewingie is not what we hoped he would be and is Brunt playing at half pace deliberatly so we do get relegated and then he knows he can move on !!!. I cant help but think some players are still not giving 100% particuarly when they lose the ball or when we are defending. Jara needs a rest (slow) and give Reid a run out or put Reid in midfield with Mulumbu to give us more fight.

JACK the HAT. – To be fair, Wolves batterd us in terms of passing in the first half. They wernt that good in the final third, but i think they deserved to be in front when they did. After that, they just sat back and let us attack them in the second half. I think if the game had have stayed 0-0 they would have had more attempts. On the plus side our defence seemed much more solid, but i dont think our attack will fair much better against stoke who have a much better defence than wolves. I think 1-1 was a fair result, i hope we fair as well at theyre place, but i dont think they will make the same mistake again there.

Jack, everyone is entitled to an opinion even if they happen to contradict your own. I would suggest you respect that. The bottom line is, we all want the team to be successful.

Fortune may have run himself into the ground yesterday but his touch at the most critical times was woeful, which is often a sign of poor confidence. At this level, you get very few opportunities so when they come along you need to take them.

Odemwingie is another one who’s confidence is sadly lacking and Jara got skinned every time Jarvis ran at him in the first half.

Against Stoke I definitely think Vela should start and I would maybe try Reid at right back as he brings some leadership and organisational skills onto the pitch.

I always thought we needed at least 4 points from the last 2 games and we’ve ended up with 2, which means we need to win an away game at some point.

Fortunately with the Stoke game being next Monday we have extra time to get Mulumbu fit (who we badly missed yesterday) and it gives Roy more time to instill his methods.

Assuming Mulumbu and Dorrans are both fit, Vera and maybe Reid get the nod to start, and another week of Roy, I’m optimistic we can get something at Stoke next week.

What gets me is the arrogant faction of the Wulfie side.

I know they will come back and cite that some of ours were talking of Europe earlier in the season but at least we were seventh at the time.

Almost all of our posters have been realistic after yesterday, admitting it was two very poor sides scrapping it out.

I’ve been over their side and many posters are level headed but there are still a great number that seem to assume a superiority.

On the Wolves site there is a good example on the Mick hits critics thread.
10 WVWolves says ’38 points will keep us up with these atrocious teams at the bottom all got to play at least 3 or 4 games against Arsenal, Man U etc.’ Yes Wolves have beat Man U, Chelsea and Man C. Great as long as you ignore the fact that they’ve also lost to Wigan twice, West Ham, Fulham, Blackburn, Villa etc.

I would only add that it’s not us, Wigan, Villa, Blues or any of the other ‘atrocious teams’ that have been in the bottom two all season. We may or may not go down but I wonder where you assume you will stay up easily. At the moment I think we both will.

He couldn’t even hack the pace in the SPL which is like playing League 1 footie in my opinion. In fairness he has scored a couple of important goals and contributed to keeping us out of the drop zone but for me neither Fortune OR Odemwingie are good enough when it comes to the crunch. Both players miss too many chances and in Odemwingie’s case he’s too greedy and insists on trying outrageous shots from impossible situations when there are better options available to him. Vela proved when he made his entrance on Sunday that whilst he’s not a regular in the Arsenal set up, he is the closest thing we have now to Kevin Phillips type player we’ve been missing.

When we were 7th I said I’d settle there and then for 17th place at the end of the season. I said that I accept that we could go down, I’ve never said anything else. It’s a fact.

I don’t go to many away games any more but I’ll keep turning up for home games week after week like I have since 1961. I won’t be sending my season ticket back if we go down. To me that’s keeping the faith.

I assume you’re not all that old which isn’t your fault, although perhaps you shouldn’t jump in with things you don’t understand about. In the 50′s, 60′s and even possibly the 70′s the FA Cup was regarded as more important than winning the League. Ask a grown up about it.

You nearly won something but didnt quite. That’s a really strong arguement. Just admit it was wrong to state Albion were in the top 2 teams in the 50′s. Youve made yourself look stupid with that nearly rubbish.
I nearly fell of my chair reading your post. Top 2 clubs indeed.
Ask anyone over age 60 who the top clubs in the 50′s were and I’m sure youll get the same answer everytime, and it wont be Albion. Funny man cantello.

that ‘nearly rubbish’ you mentioned was a whisker from the greatest achievement ever by a club in English football at that time.
The reason you nearly fell off your chair was the shock that Albion reached a position that wolves never achieved, namely runners up in the top division, and F.A.Cup winners in the same season.

As for your claim that no one over 60 would agree,I saw an interview a while back (in a midland Sunday paper) with Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones of all people, and he said ‘when I was a young lad in the 50′s,West Brom and wolves were the top football clubs, and I ended up supporting West Brom’.

And he was actually THERE at the time,so who’s to argue?

He’s a legendary musician, and obviously also has a great taste in football clubs.

    53) Shut it. You are totally out of your depth .
Albion won the FA Cup in the 50s. Well done. Now look at the real 1950s winners.
    I was there pal.
    Concentrate on this season.

the ‘discussion’ started with one of your typical biased younger knuckleheads asking TRBH a sarcastic question, and calling him a joker.
I replied by saying what I’ve heard and read over the years, and you come on to tell me to ‘shut it’.

I thought it was only some of the younger wolves fans that came here in an insulting and aggressive way,but as you’re a man of more mature years,I can see where they get the inspiration.

So much for the era of ‘Gentlemen’.

The whole point is that I wasn’t boasting about our achievements when I started this post. I was pointing out to one of our own fans that because we were a top team for some of the 3 decades I mentioned gives us no automatic right to stay up this season.

It was if you like putting ourselves down a bit. It was an idiot from your side that decided to get involved trying to score points and calling me a joker. You have followed his bad manners by telling another poster to ‘shut up.’

I’m guessing that if you were around in the 50′s you’re a bit older than me but the one thing people had then that has gone missing these days is manners.

Despite dealing with an attempted wind-up merchant CR78 has addressed him in civil terms. Perhaps if people still retained the manners and behaviour standards from back then we wouldn’t have flare and coin throwing or trains being wrecked. And I refer to both sets of fans there.

We both feel compelled to reply, but I think we know that it’s probably a waste of time.

I would happily admit that wolves had a top team in the 50′s,but for these guys to try saying Albion were good at ANY period of time would stick in their throats, there’s just too much resentment amongst them.

p.s. I just realised I’m still posting,so I’ve obviously not shut it yet.

    CHS,
We’ll never play against another eleven man defence until we play your lot again. You had one shot on goal and scored a very good one. the other one on target was a header from our own defender, Joke: “Myhill is on about giving his wages to charity, as it wasn’t earned “. No attempts on goal against Arsenal and you expect to stay up. Wolves are ruining football. I feel sorry for you lot having to pay to watch that every game.

    BOING~~~~BOING~~~~JtH.

P.S. I’ve put in joke, so as you dingles can get the gist.
