Boaz Myhill wants to beat his friend
Friday 18th February 2011, 10:29AM GMT.
Albion goalkeeper Boaz Myhill is desperate to beat opposite number Wayne Hennessey in Sunday’s Black Country derby as the pair joust for the Wales No 1 shirt.
The good friends and international colleagues will be in opposing goals on Sunday as they battle to help their respective clubs stay in the Premier League.
But Myhill, Wales’s regular shot-stopper under former boss John Toshack, has a secondary aim after losing his international place in recent months to in-form Wolves man Hennessey.
Myhill established himself as Toshack’s choice last season while playing regularly for Hull, while Hennessey was forced to watch Marcus Hahnemann perform impressively between the sticks for Wolves.
But they are now pushing each other hard with Hennessey back in favour at Molineux and Myhill having replaced club captain Scott Carson as the Baggies’ last line of defence.
Myhill said: “Our rivalry is something that’s always been similar. Wayne and myself have had little spells out of our respective first teams over the last 18 months but I enjoy the rivalry.
“I am good friends with Wayne. We are competitive every time we turn up for Wales and we’ve got a new manager now so we will have to see what happens.
“I spoke to the new Wales goalkeeping coach, Martyn Margetson, recently and he said he was looking forward to working with me and Wayne.
“And he said they would be watching us, keeping tabs on our games, and from my point of view I just want to give him a good account of myself, the same as I do for the manager here.
“I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, I want to do well for Albion and for us to stay in the league.
“Everything else after that is a bonus.”
Hennessey’s return for Wolves has brought arguably his best Premier League form.
And his rival for international honours is not surprised to see the Molineux gloveman making his mark at the highest level.
Myhill said: “I have always been very impressed with him from the first time I saw him.”
