Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
West Brom appoint Roy Hodgson
Friday 11th February 2011, 10:35AM GMT.
West Bromwich Albion have appointed Roy Hodgson as the club’s new head coach.
The 63-year-old former Inter Milan, Switzerland, Fulham and Liverpool boss – who was voted the 2010 manager of the year by the League Managers’ Association – has signed a deal until June 2012.

Poll: Are you pleased with Roy Hodgson’s appointment?
A statement on the club website said: “Michael Appleton, who was appointed caretaker head coach on Sunday after Roberto Di Matteo was relieved of his duties, will remain in charge for the West Ham game.
“The club are now channelling all of their efforts into supporting Appleton, his assistants Keith Downing and Dean Kiely and the players as they prepare for tomorrow’s vital game.”
Chairman Jeremy Peace and the board moved for Hodgson in a bid to pull the club clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
Albion currently sit outside the drop zone on goal difference.
Against the odds, Hodgson rescued Fulham from relegation in 2008, before taking them to last season’s Europa League final.
Ex-Hawthorns captain Derek McInnes and former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton had also been tipped to take the Baggies hotseat.
Former Blackburn Rovers boss Hodgson left Liverpool on January 8 after a tumultuous six month reign.
In a poll earlier this week, Hodgson finished second with 17% of votes, trailing only ex-Spurs boss and former Albion player Martin Jol who got 26%. Nearly 1500 fans voted.

Great news……
I was split between Hodgson & Houghton as both would bring great things to the club, but if we want experience and a seen it / done it / and done it well manager then there is no one better than Woy !!
The players should respond to him and i think he will have the respect of all in the dressing room…. great appointment !!!

Great appointment – well done JP.
Thats great news and huge relief.
Although I’m an avid RDM supporter still, Roy is the option I prefer to the other candidates so hopefully he can get us playing like Fulham, maybe even get Gera back as he’s on a free at the end of the season.
Onwards and upwards!
Come on you baggies!!!!!!!
Lets hope this appointment shuts up all those who said we would just go for a cheap option – JP has once again found the money to make the right deal for West Brom.
I also hope this appointment stops any stupid protest at the game tomorrow – we have a manager in now so lets support him – any protest now will be an anti-hodgson protest !!
This is why JP nearly always gets my support – overall I trust him with my club !!
Good luck Roy.
Not my choice but I will support you and the boys to the hilt. Does this hint that Appy will work with Roy and the job will be his next?
Lets go and beat West Ham and Wolves and everything will look better again!!!
if he can get us to Europa Final, I’ll be happy!!!!

For me, he was the right choice from the start. Welcome Woy, let’s hope you’ve got sone magic hidden up your sleeves to keep us up and help us move onwards and upwards.

As a Wolves fan it pains me to say but very good appointment. I hope all the midlands teams stay in the prem and sure you will (it’s us i worry about)

Let’s hope Woy wallops the Wolves in his first game in charge.

We have appointed a manager who, just 9 months ago, took a small club to a UEFA Cup Final ! Great news … let’s be honest here, two weeks ago we all thought we were going down and JP has done something about it.

At least the uncertainty is over now!!!
Personally I could’nt call it & did’nt see the decision coming last week. However, as usual the Baggies will receive my undying support as always & I’m sure that goes for all of us!!!! Just want to wish Roy all the best, hopefuly we’ll all be saying what a good call it was @ the end of the season. Bring on tomorrow & 3 points… I’m sure we will see maximum effort from the stars in stripes…
Baggies forever!!!!!

Roy Hodgson ticks all of the boxes – he’s been successful at firefighting a relegation haunted club (Fulham), he then went and kicked them on into Europe, he’s managed under a technical director on numerous occassions in Europe, he’s been (relatively) successful as an international manager (took Switzerland to their first international championships in over 30 years), and he speaks even more languages than RDM!!
Great appointment, Mr Peace. And welcome to the Hawthorns, Roy.

A really top coach, should do well at the Hawthorns. I suppose some of egos at Anfield were just too big for him to handle.

Happy – you wanted Hughton yesterday?!
delighted with the appointment – the best of the names thrown around the past 5 days by a mile. Must admit I couldn’t see him being interested as still obviously picking up a nice pay day each month with Liverpool.
Need to get 3 points tomorrow now. Must win game. Atmosphere will be immense!

Good appointment but you wont be seeing pretty football lol And he aint proven in getting teams out of the Championship.

The dust should now settle on this topic. We all wish Roberto well and he’ll be up there again soon. What went wrong can only be pure speculation on our part, we may never know the detailed truth.
What matters now is UNITY, to beat West Ham.
A full house please, reduce the prices if need be. kids a quid, bring a mate for a tenner, whatever. The Wulfies’ match will be jam-packed anyway with loads of taunts no doubt about ‘they’ve got a shed that’s bigger than this’ now they’re having a new Moulinex
food mixer.
I would love to see the Halfords as a double-decker stand soon. It could happen if we can stay up.

The first thing you need is for the playing squad to respect the Manager, and Hodgson’s past record should certainly have that effect.
He’s been Coach at the highest level,in several countries, and with our squad being ‘cosmopolitan’,he should have no problems dealing with, and motivating them.
A few days ago,I tried to ‘see’ inside JP’s mind, and said it would be worth going to the bookies and having a flutter on Hodgson-I told others, but didn’t get around to it myself-damn!!!

beeover 17 – I answered you on another thread – yes i was supportive of Hughton yesterday and think he would have been a good appointment.
This is the last thing I posted on the Hughton thread yesterday….
“I’ve no idea who will or should get the job but I would love to see either Hughton, hodgson or JOl come in”.
I would have been happy with either as our manager – I’m just pleased we now attract this type of manager.

Well done JP, my choice from the start. Lets get behind the boys. COME ON YOU BAGGIES

When RDM left his post I posted on this site along with many others that it was imperative that they went for experience. They have certainly achieved that in appointing Roy Hodgson . I had hoped but did not think it would happen. He will obviously be disappointed over the events at Liverpool and this may just spur him to give us a very good eighteen months.
Well done JP.
What a happy Baggie I am! Great appointment. I was gutted to see RDM lose his job but on reflection, I can now see the reasons why. 13 loses in 18 games is just not good enough and with Woy in charge I am optimistic for our Premier League survival for the first time in a couple of months.
Happy days!!!

The Albion job was made for Roy Hodgson
as he certainly likes signing our players
ie. Greening,Gera,and Kamara, he`s
already worked with Shorey and Barnes,
and wanted to sign Brunt,Dorrans, and Thomas
when he was at Liverpool.
Jeremy Peace has tryed everything else so this
really is his last hope,a manager with his
experience is just what we needed.
WELL DONE JEREMY PEACE!!
and for once not the cheap option!!
Maybe he was saving the January transfer
money for this appointment.

I’m absolutely thrilled.
Whatever you think of Roy Hodgson he’s been at some top, top clubs and has been successful through large parts of his career. For us to appoint a manager who has managed at Inter Milan, internationally and less than a year ago was joint favourite for the England job and Manager of the Year absolutely fills me with pride.
We’ll never know what happened with RDM, it was a tragic end to his reign and I wish him nothing but success in his life but it’s every Albion fans duty to get right behind the new man and psuh us towards safety, starting tomorrow!!
I don’t think many of us agreed with JP’s decision, but he had his reasons and he’s stuck his neck out with this appointment- this is no cheap option.

As for attracting this kind of manager – I completely hold my hands up and didnt think we’d be able to and posted to that effect. Fair play to the Albion Peace and co…..lets hope that Appy gets us off to the best possible start tomorrow.
First goal will be crucial.

Woy,well wow! Didn’t mention Roy when writing before as i just didn’t think we’d feature on his radar. Excellent appointment. Hopefully ‘Appy will stay and further his education as a coach. Reputation tainted slightly in Liverpool, but this man is quality. Parting shot is that it doesn’t mask the fact that i felt RDM deserved more backing in the first place. But as i’ve stated before, the king is dead, long live the king. Well done JP.

Well, not for the first time, I’m in a minority. I’ve nothing against Hodgson, he “had” a good track record, “but” I watched his frustration grow at Liverpool as the players showed little respect for him.
Appy, 24 hours ago, “thought” he had a chance of running the coaching – remember Nigel, prior to Mowbray’s reign – was he fooling himself or was he misled?
Hodgson is now Head Coach and I’ll support him and the team, but I can’t pretend this has been the best week in the 33 years I’ve been a Baggie – there’s a nasty taste in my mouth… Salom

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Welcome Roy. I´m so glad and optimistic about Albion for the fisrt time in ages. If I could do a somersault this very minute I would…
Admittedly, I was also thrilled with happiness when I heard of Di Matteo´s sacking, because – like a lot of posters in recent days correctly point out – he was turning into Mowbray #2 with tippy tappy football leading us nowhere with a record of 13 losses out of 18 recently. As I posted recently we would always have to score 3 goals each game to stand any chance of winning and that is a tall order. Now Roy has to sort out our abysmal defence and restore some confidence within the ranks. He can do it, I´m 100% sure and no way we are going down now. Living in Denmark I knew he was managing FC Copenhagen – a team I absolutely loathe – a few seasons back and all the players there loved him to bits. Even I could tolerate FC Copenhagen at that time and that speaks volumes….
What a great end to this season this is going to be. It will be very difficult and not for the faint hearted but he will bring us out of this mess. In the meantime, wish I could go to The Hawthorns tomorrow and salute Michael Appleton. What a great bloke staying loyal to Albion turning down 7 job opportunities to stay here. He´s a rare breed in these days of cynical football players.
So, fellow Albionites, give Michael a big roar of appreciation from me tomorrow, okay!?
I´m already thinking about next season and what great players he is going to bring into our club. This club is going places now! Loving it! Loving it! Loving it! Loving it! Loving it!

I suspect they’ll have told Appleton the position is his at some point in the future after say, working under Woy. It is notable that we’ve clung onto him through successive reigns and Appleton admitted himself earlier in the week that the club have told they see a future for him.

Welcome Roy to the baggies, I wish you lots of success at our club.
The task is difficult, but i do believe we have the quality of players that can achieve us the points we need to stay up, if you can get them motivated and playing the fearless football we played in the earlier part of the season.
Combine this with a slice of luck that seems to have abandoned us of late, and no injuries to Olsen as we have No cover for him , and you will become our hero at the Hawthorns.
Good luck Roy..

Whether you think this is a good appointment or not , you can’t say this may hasn’t got pedigree. He’s arguably the most high profile manager the Albion have ever had , and at a time when all around were losing theirs, JP has kept his head and done exactly what needed doing over the course of the last week. It’s a measure of his skills that we have been able to attract such a man as Hodgson. Well done JP, you’ll do for me.

he’s played thick mick’s team three times and lost them all 2 at fulham 1 at liverpool.

The more I think about this, the more I think JP has pulled a rabbit out of the hat.
Last season, Hodgson took Fulham to the final of the Europa league and was voted manager of the year by his peers. At that point, could you ever imagine him being the Albion head coach…… absolutely not.
Then, he gets the Liverpool job but isn’t embraced by their fans because of the Dalglish overhang, he loses Muscharano early in the season and Torres just didn’t want to be at Liverpool anymore. Add to that a mis-firing Steven Gerrard and anyone would have had problems.
Roy should’nt be judged on the 6 months he spent at Anfield but on his overall track record, which is top drawer.
I also think that after the Liverpool experience he’ll want to prove a point and he probably now realises that clubs of our size really are in his sweet spot.
I know he’s got an immediate relegation fight on his hands keeping us in the Premiership but I really believe that in time, we might just look back on this appointment as a stroke of genius.

I really do like Hodgson, he performed miracles to keep fulham up, but only after bringing in a few key players like hangeland in the January transfer window.
He doesnt have that luxury this time round and will have tougher job here with the championship mentality and lack of investment from the board. Maybe he has go some guarentees of money to spend if he keeps them up?

Your nom de guerre reminds me of how the custard bowl used to look. I know you are jealous of our big name Head Coach, but never mind you’re stuck with Mick, even when you are relegated. We don’t have to rebuild the HAWTHORNS, as we are not half a mile away from the playing surface, ours is worth calling a park, not like yours, a disgrace to the Premiership. We also have proper floodlights which enhance our stadium. Obviously our players are more talented than your hoofballers. They will have to slow down when they visit us, as your lot carry so many injuries. Don’t forget to park the bus, you’ll need it. Can’t wait, pal. Sun, Feb 20th, high noon. Get it on.

A few days ago it was “Peace out” “Sack the board” etc etc, now he’s the messiah!
I have said all along that JP has worked wonders for the Albion, he doesn’t have the multi millions to splash out on players but knows more about running a football club properly than any chairman out there in my opinion.
If I’m honest, Roy wouln’t have been my first choice as I thought we should have given Mike Appleton a go until the end of the season. However, you can’t argue with Roy Hodgson’s track record (except for Liverpool). This is a real coup, he’s said himself that he was so impressed with our set up that he took the job.
Whatever you think guys, get behind the team tomorrow, they need our support, not protests and placards.

Have a word with yourself!! Your win over Liverpool, much like your wins over Manchester United and Chelsea, are all described by the opposition’s supporters as comfortably their ‘worst performance of the season’. I remember when we went down under Robson, every team we beat, we beat because they were a shambles on that particular day, generally because we were terrible ourselves.
Were it not for those particular pieces of fortune on your part in tandem with, in fairness, Mick getting his players grafting, then there is no doubt you’d be cast adrift at the bottom of the table by about 6 points. I’d just be relieved to still be in it. However don’t let that fool you into thinking Zubar, Craddock, Stearman, Elokobi, Henry, Foley and Ward are Premiership footballers. Bring on next week!!
