Albion’s transfer moves drew a blank
Tuesday 1st February 2011, 1:00PM GMT.
Albion today turned their attention to the game with Wigan after their bid to make a transfer deadline day signing drew a blank.
The Baggies ended the January window with Arsenal loanee Carlos Vela as the only new arrival, after their efforts to add extra recruits yesterday ended in frustration.
They enquired about Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge but he went to Bolton.
Brazil-born Italy international Amauri was another target but he opted to move from Juventus to Parma.
And his agent fired a surprising barbed comment at Albion and Fulham, who both expressed an interest.
Ernesto Bronzetti said: “The truth is we said no to two English clubs – West Brom and Fulham.
“These clubs are not at his level.”
Chelsea also refused to let defender Jeffrey Bruma leave Stamford Bridge, despite resurrecting their £21million deal for Benfica’s David Luiz.
And there was a bizarre end to the Baggies’ chase for striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
The Cameroon international had chosen a loan move to Cologne over a switch to the Hawthorns, but finds himself stranded at Hamburg when a faulty fax machine meant paperwork arrived at the German Football Associaition three minutes late.
Young Albion defender Paul Downing also joined Shrewsbury Town on a month’s loan.
