Baggies’ Jeffrey Bruma chances fading

Albion’s hopes of landing Chelsea defender Jeffrey Bruma were today described as  “very slim” by the teenager’s agent.

The Baggies were today attempting to secure at least one deadline-day signing with Cameroon striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Italy international hitman  Amuari and Argentine forward Chori Dominguez among several strikers on the radar.

But they also want defensive cover with their pursuit of 19-year-old Chelsea stopper Bruma suffering a major setback when the Premier League champions’ bid  to sign defender David Luiz collapsed at the weekend.

Wessel Weezenberg, Bruma’s agent, said: “At the moment the chances are very slim.

“Things might change but as long as Chelsea don’t sign another defender then I think the chances of Jeffrey going on loan are slim.

“If Chelsea do sign someone then a loan is a definite option. Is West Brom an option? Of course.”

Albion, however, were refusing to give up hope of signing Bruma with Chelsea still making last-ditch efforts to resurrect the Luiz negotiations with Benfica or secure another target.

Several attacking targets were still under discussion today despite Friday’s signing of Carlos Vela on loan from Arsenal but all potential deals faced obstacles as the transfer window entered its final 12 hours.

Amauri, aged 30, is the highest profile target to emerge at the weekend with Juventus keen to find a buyer for the Brazil-born one-cap Italy international to ease their own recruitments efforts.

But the player’s agent today claimed his client had rejected the advances of  both Albion and Fulham with Italian club Palermo emerging as favourites to sign him.

Dominguez has also been discussed with the 29-year-old, who is more effective as a support striker, potentially available just a year after joining Valencia.

He spent much of his senior career in Russia with a two-year stint at Zenit St Petersburg in between two spells with Rubin Kazan. He scored 44 goals in 132 games in Russia.

Choupo-Moting, a German-born Cameroon international from Hamburg, is also still on the radar but reports from Germany today suggested he could sign a new contract to stay in the Bundesliga.

Meanwhile, Bristol City boss Keith Millen today ruled out signing Roman Bednar before today’s deadline despite expressing an interest in the Czech Republic international at the weekend.
