Forest return ruled out for Nicky Shorey

Nicky Shorey is staying at Albion after speculation linked him with a return to Nottingham Forest.

Widespread reports claimed Forest, who loaned Shorey from Villa last season, had approached the Baggies about taking the left-back for a second spell at The City Ground.

But, with just five days remaining in the transfer window, boss Roberto Di Matteo said: “Nothing is going on with Nicky. There’s no truth in it. Nicky is not going anywhere. He is part of this squad. I can’t see anyone leaving at the moment.

“Maybe towards the end of the window it might change if something else happens.”

Meanwhile, Di Matteo has expressed his support for the transfer window system despite the Baggies’ struggles to strengthen throughout January.

The window splits opinion among the managers but Di Matteo believes the current system is preferable to the alternatives of either no transfers throughout the season or a return to a year-round transfer market.

“Generally speaking I think it’s a good idea to be able to review things in January and be able to make changes,” he said. “You could be in a position where you have so many injuries and suspensions that you are decimated and the transfer window gives you a chance to do something about it.”

“I think it is a necessity to have transfer windows. Many years ago it was available for the whole season but this system is better.

“This gives you more stability, otherwise you could lose any player at any time.”

And Di Matteo believes transfer activity across the country will hot up in the days ahead.

“I’m sure some deals will get done in the last few days because some clubs wait until then to release players,” he said.

“They keep their options open but sometimes a club gets a player in then releases another one.

“We’ve seen it with Manchester City buying Dzeko and then Adebayor going.”
