Steven Reid could return next week

Albion utility man Steven Reid has targeted next Tuesday’s Hawthorns clash with Wigan for a potential comeback from his knee injury.

The former Republic of Ireland international could be ready to face the Latics in six days’ time after making a speedy recovery from knee surgery.

Reid was scheduled to miss at least six weeks after injuring his knee against Manchester United on New Year’s Day but now believes he could be ready to play by next week, just four weeks after the injury, after stepping up his training with the physios yesterday.

The 29-year-old said: “Hopefully I’ll have no reaction to yesterday’s session and I can push on.

“I’m hoping to get back into full training at the weekend, if I do enough with the physios over the next few days.

“I need to be in full training then if I’m to have half a chance of being involved against Wigan. Hopefully, I’ll be involved, touch wood.

“But I don’t want to push it too much, as I only had surgery two-and-a-half weeks ago. ”

Reid feared his season could have been ended by the strain against United and has endured a month of frustration after picking up the injury as he was pushing for a permanent place in the first team.

He said: “I feared the worst, but it wasn’t too painful the next day and there wasn’t much swelling on it.

“I was a bit nervous going back under the knife. But it was good news and a little trim of the cartilage. Hopefully it won’t affect me too much.

“I try and keep my body in decent shape now I’m getting on a bit. As you’re hitting 30 you need to look after your body a little better and hopefully that has speeded up the recovery.

“I felt pretty comfortable in the United game. I had not started a league game for four or five weeks before that and sometimes it does take a little while to get back into it, but I felt really good. I was pleased with how the game was going.

“I was hoping for a little run in the team but, as luck would have it, I picked up that injury and it set me back a little bit.”
