Blackburn 2 Albion 0
Sunday 23rd January 2011, 6:00PM GMT.
An own goal from Gabriel Tamas proved the catalyst for defeat as Albion’s spirited performance counted for nothing at Blackburn.
Tamas headed past his own goalkeeper Boaz Myhill to put the Baggies on the backfoot at half-time, before a stunner from David Hoilett settled the game in the second-half.
Albion had started the game brighter and goalkeeper Paul Robinson was called into action with the game less than a minute old, getting down to parry wide Peter Odemwingie’s low drive.
Robinson again thwarted the Baggies on 13 minutes, this time making himself big to block Jerome Thomas from scoring.
But Blackburn had their own chances to break the deadlock with Boaz Myhill – again preferred to Scott Carson – in the away goal doing very well to block Martin Olsson’s shot with his legs, after the ball had come through a host of players and threatened to nutmeg him before he flung himself to the ground.
However, there was nothing Myhill could do when Tamas’ moment of horror came along on 41 minutes.
David Dunn put a cross that Tamas went for, with Nikola Kalinic just behind him but not challenging for the ball, only for the Albion defender’s header to loop towards his own goal and over the despairing dive of Myhill, who had little chance of making the save.
Albion needed to start the second-half well after going behind just before half-time and another goal two minutes after the break gave them a mountain to climb.
Hoilett had a lot to do picking the ball outside the area but had the time to take a touch that took him past Tamas to let fly at goal, with a rasping effort that went through Myhill and rippled into the net.
That left the Baggies needing a goal just to get within a equaliser of their hosts but they were denied a certain penalty when referee Mark Clattenburg misjudged Jermaine Jones’ foul on Odemwingie, which was inside the area, but ruled as outside with a free-kick given.

Poor tactics, poor performance.
How much longer can Morrison keep his place? Ball greedy and ineffective.
Brunts about as inspirational as a captain as tony mowbrays voice.
Myhill made very good saves, yet two goals straight down the middle, and If Carson was in goal these “Carson haters” would be back on the bandwagon yet all will be quiet tonight.
Tamas, very poor, ibanez deserves chance.
RDMs tactics are poor 4-5-1 is stale and haven’t got players for that formation, substitutions leave me scratching head, timing as well as who he takes off!
Bigtime Charlie (scharner) was ball watching all game.
On a brighter note… Olsson (captain material) looked solid.

i thought myhill did well throughout the game, but tamas didnt keep his eye on the ball, it absolutely flew in, and the second one, well we just backed off, the 1 on 1′s we should be burying them, and was robbed again by the ref, i just hope we sort it out for the wigan game and take our chances infront of the net, come on albion

I could say it’s like ‘groundhog day’ again, with Albion having plenty of possession, and almost twice as many shots as Blackburn, yet still losing the game. But what really concerns me are these unbelievable decisions from the officials. It’s gone way beyond a joke-how is it possible that ALL the officials miss cast-iron penalty decisions, where fouls are commited in full view of everyone, but it’s only the officials that don’t actually see them? At Blackburn, the defender who slid in behind Peter, took his legs away, then ended up stopping ON the penalty area line. That means that the defender MUST of commited the foul INSIDE the area,so the Ref. and his Assistant couldn’t fail to see this.A similar thing happened against Man U recently, with the Gary Neville tackle, where EVERYONE had a clear view of the foul, but nothing was given. You can only draw two conclusions, either:
1) The officials cannot see what is clearly staring them in the face,so are incompetent and not up to the job,or:
2) There’s something more sinister happening, and I don’t really want to go there without this post being blocked.
So maybe it’s time for RDM to do a Gary Megson-send a video compilation of these diabolical decisions to the F.A. asking them if this is normal practice in the Prem.? I’ve got a feeling we’d have the same outcome-that the protest would be completely ignored, and things will always stay the same way.Disgusting.

A spirited performance maybe but RDM must start to question when to play 2 upfront from the start, not just for the last 20 minutes. We clearly missed Brunts wide play, & playing him down the middle was a mistake. As for taking Mulumbu off well unless I’ve missed something (injury) then what a joke. I have rated RDM so far, but am beggining to question how far he & his team can take us & wether they have already taken us as far as they can. I don’t want to mention the “R” word but at this rate we are looking like getting dragged in fast!

I don’t think we were desperately bad today, but we conceded at bad times. CR78 made a point recently about us struggling against teams like Blackburn who are big, strong and get men behind the ball. We end up passing it to death then the final ball is always a cross where Odemwingie will never get any change out of two big centre-backs. If anything it reinforces the idea that we need a Carew-like figure as a plan B.
Slightly disappointing how little we seem to attack the ball in the opposition penalty box, but on the positive I thought Myhill did well. Jara looked reasonably solid when there have been question marks. Olsson got a game under his belt. Thomas looked sharp.
Our home games are where we need to pick up points- Wigan, West Ham and Wolves coming up.

I’m sorry but its a case of one step forward and two back, and that will only lead to one thing !!!.
We started well then did our usual thing of going behind (has Tamas got any control of his head). We just do things like that week in and week out and therfore paid the price. Seeing our manager just standing like a statue when all around is going pear shaped does not fill me with confidence (strange Mulumbu taken off unless injured he was our best player). We are now showing all the signs of our old faults of not competing for the ball and Morrison is so light-weight I’m supprised he can stay on the ground (another Koren). the only good from todays game is Myhill (good signs of confidence) and Oloson back to command the back line. Very disapointed in Brunt (looked as though he’d been up all night) Sharmer was never in it and poor old Odewinga must wonder if he has BO as now one ever goes near him. His he the only player permitted in the opposition penalty area.

28mns before Myhill had anything seious to do
we had more attempts more corners their keeper
should be considered for England should have
had a penalty plenty of positives but yet again RDMs favourite preffered instead of COX

Gutted that after another half decent performance the Baggies (again) still came away with nothing!
The telling statistics from this game clearly show where Albion’s problems lie -
Shots on target – Blackburn 12, scored 2.
Albion 20, scored 0.
For me, that says it all!

good performance BUT we need another striker – NOW!!!!!
Disapointing, yes. But for me there were many positives. Myhill looks very comfortable in goal, Jonas was back to his best, Thomas had yat another full back in his pocket, and of course Mulumbu was immense.
For this game i though Morrisson looked lightweight, but this was never going to be his game against a very physical blackburn. I do feel if dorrans was fit he would have got the start, and yes brunt is better when predominantly wide.
referee’s are becoming embarasing now, cant begin to count how many wrong decisions weve had but it needs raising with the referee’s association. Stoke, man u and blackburn spring to mind.
It aint comfortable but this the Albion, so lets get behind the lads against Wigan and make sure we stay up.

We have got relegation written all over us at the moment. We beat a very tired Blackpool team last week and after the next 4 games the big-boys start coming back onto the radar and if we are in a losing mentality, we will be relegated.
RDM seems to have no Plan B at all. 4-5-1 is boring and predictable and we haven’t switched formation all season. Our defence is disorganised and we lack a real leader on the pitch.
On a positive note I think that Morrison was excellent but looks frustrated at having to hold onto the ball we have a lack of movement in the final third.

When are referees and linesmen going to work together? over a clear cut decision of a penalty.Westbrom was robed when is the 4th official going to get a monitor ? to back up shouts like this everybody could see this on tv. linesman needs glasses, and ref was within spitting distance of the instance inside the box.
We know it would not make any difference with the two goals but it would have given us a chance. Come on JP back Roberto we need some goal power up front goals give a chance of survival next few games are vital for points if we want to stay in Ppremier.
Come on you baggies give it your best shot.

Here we go again, after rekindling hopes against Blackpool we are back to our old sloppy ways again. There was no urgency when going forward, it was all very slow build up with too many psses just going side to side.
I agree with others on here re. Mulumbu, why was he taken off?? him and Thomas were our 2 best players so it was beyond belief when RDM fetched him off, Morrison should have been hauled off long before this – totally lightweight, can’t pass – other than to the opposition, can’t tackle and hasn’t a clue where the goal is, just wanders round in circles.
Why isn’t Cox being given a fair crack, he’s a natural goalscorer but is not being given a chance.
Don’t hold your hopes out for any new signings during this window we are dithering again as usual and others keep pipping us typical JP, likes to keep his hands in his pockets!!

3 CR78.
I’d go a step further and say that our major problem is that like Gary Megson, Bryan Robson and Tony Mowbray we have a Manager that doesn’t criticise referees. Remember Tony Pulis constantly moaning about decisions? The next time they play against an ‘unimportant’ team IE us, they get two of the dodgiest penalties you will ever see.
More important than a striker, let’s bring in a professional ref baiting consultant in the window. How about Sam Alladyce to give tips to RDM on the most effective ways to whinge at refs before, during and after the game.
RESPECTING THE REF GETS YOU NOWHERE.

Mulumbus apprentice- im not a fan of carson, but if he would have conceded top corner headers and thunderbolt strikes every game i probobaly would never have a gripe. Myhill di well.
Tamas and jara just arent good enough for the prem, we need to give ibanez a few games as tamas has been consistently below par for weeks.
Morrison- why why why. I bet he touched the ball less than twenty times in 90 minutes. He contributes very very little.
Why does di matteo wait so long to make changes to personel or tactics.
My old man said yesterday that we move the ball to slow, when we play with more pace we cause teams problems, the mowbray slow build up plays into the oppositions hands.
If we cant control a midfield with 5 against 4, maybe 4-4-2 is worth a go.

Our next three home games are VITAL. We need 9 points as I cannot see us getting any points in March or April but if we win those three we should just about have enough points for our games in May. Wigan, Westham and The Dings must be 9 points.
Lets hope that the team are working hard to bring in upto four new players who can make an impact.

Gutted as it looked like we caould have got a draw at least for some time. Misfortune in the finishing and refereeing played a big part in this loss but that’s life.
It’s an away game so don’t lose too much heart over it but as “baggietastic” says the next 3 games are so vital to us and hope 6 points is where we’re aiming for.

Another one who does not understand Shorey decision, his only slightly dodgy game was at No 2 v Man C otherwise he started brilliantly. Morrison & Tamas poor, Brunt better in middle dictates game, Olsson, Myhill & Thomas excellent.Dorrans on recent performances might just be getting back to form. RDM strange to put Bednar wide left! JP/DA you have 7 days to get it right – striker & right sided centre half otherwise we might be back in the Championship and the yo yo eventually stops going back up. How important next 3 home games & previous February’s not always been kind.

Very disappointing performance. Blackburn equalled us for footballing and totally overshadowed us in DESIRE! Yes, the ‘penalty’ would have changed the game, but it looked to me like one or two of ours had no stomach for it.
Surely it is time for Sepp Blatter to go so we may have electronic backup for penalties and goal line decisions?
Sir Terence reckons his posts have been ignored by E&S so he’s jacked it in. Pity, I need a laugh after yesterday.

The people on here that get on my nerves are the ones that never try to look further than the end of their own noses. By all means criticise but at least have a stab at saying how you would put things right. I usually try to be constructive and get accused of wearing blue and white tinted specs (if I was a Wulfie it would be a Happy Clapper.)
I don’t want everybody to agree me but don’t just say ‘so and so is rubbish,’ say why you think he’s rubbish. Especially in the case of Tamas who seems to be jostling with Mozza at the moment to succeed Scott Carson.
Mulumbu was injured during the week, might it not be that RDM was protecting an injury rather than risk being without him for 6 months, I don’t know this for a fact but do people really think RDM thinks ‘ooh I can’t take JM off he’s my favourite.’ Grow up.
Looking on the positive side. Jonas looks to have gotten over his injury. Dorrans to come back, I think we miss his driving us forward when he doesn’t play. I’ll no doubt be howled down but I think we looked good in parts so it’s fine tuning to put things right rather than major surgery.
We need to be a bit more shoot on sight in front of goal, I agree we are in danger of becoming like Arsenal and trying to walk the ball into the net.
What we really need to look at is the way Blackburn defended after going in front. They covered each other brilliantly and we can learn from that. PL teams in general are very difficult to break down and we can’t afford to give goals away, although yesterdays was a freak but these things happen. Interestingly the second goal was very similar to the first one at Fulham yet no one has had a go at the keeper over it yet. Interesting that. Not that I blame Myhill at all, it was down to the way the modern day Frido balls move in the air.
I know some of the over the top posts on here are Shadrag and his cronies but not all of them. It’s too easy just to come on here whenever we lose to slag everything off and look for scapegoats. If you’re going to be there on the pitch at the end of the season carrying the manager and the players shoulder high if we stay up, ask yourselves will you also be giving them a kicking if we go down?

On the positives, I forgot to say that Roman looked up for it when he came on. Much more like it than he did earlier in the season. Perhaps he’s got his head right and with a few more games could still have an impact for us.

I said on this site that we were too lightweight in midfield and the performance of James Morrison illustrated this. He is neither quick enough to play wide or strong enough to play central midfield.
It’s difficult to criticize Tamas as he has generally been outstanding since his arrival but he is going through a bad spell and should be taken out of the firing line for a spell. Can’t understand the criticism of Jara and Cech yesterday, both played well. At least we look to have found a goalkeeper.

Dudley Baggie,
I said the same on another thread only a couple of days ago about Wheater, for £2.5 mil he definately could have done a good job for us, but I also believe indiviually our defence is the best in a long time, if they get the basics right and get at least 1 clean sheet it will build confidence, same with the strikers, its confidence, but unfortunately in the game nowadays there isnt time for sentiments, results have to happen straight away, what some of us have forgotten is that its been a few months since that back 4 played 2gether and with Myhill. It can only get better !!

Your blogs often leave me bemused, the first half of this one is no exception. I can only assume that you think Tamas and Morrison are playing well at the moment ? . It seems odd to me that you think people should not judge players on their performances. The middle part of your blog about covering i agreed with.
At the end of the season , if we go down, there will be a review of the situation by everybody involved , no doubt some will start a witchunt and will look for scapegoats.

Stated in a previous post Tamas needs respite. Brunt wasted out on the right. Morrison! well, inconspicuous. Scharner needs to learn how to track back or play central defence. Can we have some strikers in the box, especially when there are three playing. Austin in at right back. Lets get in a higher gear when attacking, it catches defences off guard. Can our defence press their forwards so they have to play the ball across the back. Need better distribution.

‘sack the manager’?!!!
Did I seriously read an ‘Albion’ fan call for RDMs head like a petulant Dingle. I think those of you who prematurely cack yourselves at the first sign of trouble need to take stock and look at how RDM has transformed the side. If you want to heckle your own side then theres a place down the road where thats common practice otherwise get behind the team and lets stay up or go down with a touch of dignity.
RDM has got a blind spot when it comes to playing nasty, cheating, ugly sides like Blackburn, Stoke etc. It is one of the few occasions where you should heavily defend and play long balls up to Peter. If you have six players defending every time they attack it cuts off thier supply to thier forwards and makes thier average midfielders play football against ours. A battle which we will win. Thier heavy duty centre halves will then be no match for St Peters pace and so a long ball over the half way line and they’re dead in the water. We don’t do this. We always try to play football, which is great, but we need to wake up to the fact that not every side in this league does play football. We needed to match thier physical threat, Tchoyi was the right sub but Morrison should’ve given way not Mulumbu. Shorey should always play instead of Cech. If we’d have started with that line up, maybe we could’ve contained them. We’ll never know.
Clattenburg should be struck off. Terrible ref so one eyed he could’ve been a mythical creature. Blackburn hacked and barged and kicked and we got nowt then we brush past them and they fall over and its a free kick. Several times thier players dived and then Thomas goes down on one occasion and he’s booked. We dont even need to mention the penalty.
WHAT A PLONKER. Isnt it funny how we all know his name and how every team bar probably the top 6 groan when he’s named? When a ref ‘makes a name for himself’ he should go through a probationary period then get relegated, and not just down one division, right down to conference then they should have to work thier way back gradually on good behaviour. That way we’ll have a much more open and fair Premier. You get paid to be a ref, so like any job if your good at it you’ll get pay rises ect. If your rubbish you get the boot. The league will be better to watch because decisions will be fair and not just influenced by the volume of a home crowd and teams like Blackburn will be relegated because of the way they play the game.
I’m sorry for the long winded and vitriolic post. COME ON YOU BAGGIES WE NEED AN EXTRA STRIKER and we need to put a good run together soon if we’re going to stay up.

I was disappointed after bright start and I’m not sure I can explain all that went wrong.
Firstly, thought Myhill and Olsson were top draw. But I remain concerned about the rest of the season because:
1. Our forward play is too predictable 70% through Thomas or Cech – the right side is problematic.
2. Albion were lightweight – teams like Blackburn and Stoke knock them off the ball too easily.
3. Morrison/Brunt and Mulumbu/Scharner don’t work well together – playing too much as individuals rather than as a team.
4. St Peter needs help ‘cos he’s not strong enough to play as a lone striker. Webo isn’t the answer if last night’s performance is an indicator – same as MF in IMO.
Finally, sack RDM? You are applying for Dingle membership I assume?

35. I believe myhill looked solid all game, I’m just stating that neither goal was in the corner, BUT I’m not saying he should’ve saved them, I’m saying the fans if Carson was in goal would shift that criticism onto him like too many times this season, I’m looking at it from a view of treating Carson and myhill the same, two very good goalkeepers yet Carson in my opinion gets a rough time, however myhill has deserved his chance and taken it.
I’d consider moving jara into midfield with mulumbu as he is being found out at rb. And scharner was in his own words last week lazy.
And back to dropping players, Carson deserved it after some dodgy poor performances, but morrison has performed to a standard this season that wouldn’t get into a championship team and of Carson who was captain deserves dropping then this man certainly does.
Interested to see what people think about brunt now being the new captain? I think his head is one of te first to go down when things get tough, and i would have chosen olsson, but interested what others think?

Only Myhill, Olsen, Mulumbu and PO emerged with any credit from this game. I don’t understand why we hoofed the ball upfield to PO ; he is not a target man and was up against the enormous Samba so always lost out. I think we need to remember we’re not going to win every week.
The idea this season was to make us competitive in every game we play and that’s what we have been.
Yes there were disappointments yesterday, we looked a bit flat, gave a soft goal away and looked short of ideas once Blackburn got men behind the ball, but that last one’s a problem we already knew about and we know RDM’s trying to rectify by the type of strikers he’s being linked with.
I read a piece from a Blackburn fan saying it’s the best he’s seen his side play this season, yet we still went there and had 20 shots on target and had a stonewall penalty turned down. There will be (and have been) teams who’ve gone there this season and done a lot worse. Liverpool got hammered there a week or two ago.
That type of game never suits us and I think we need to look forward to these home games instead of demanding knee-jerk reactions.
Re: Mulumbu. He was brought off against Blackpool too. Perhaps he’s carrying a knock or he was knackered. RDM knows him a lot better than we do.

I didn’t say Tamas or Morrison are playing well but I rate them both as players and don’t think it helps getting on their backs because of a loss of form. I’m not infallible though so let’s try attacking them, who knows it may help build their confidence.
Glad we agree about something football related re the covering and I thought Baggie in Manc’s post was excellent as well. I think it’s either BIM or Kev who has referred to themselves as Polyanna in the past compared to you. I sometimes make my posts more positive than I might be feeling just to counteract some of the regular doom and gloom merchants on here.
It’s very easy, I’d go as far as to say lazy to give a knee jerk reaction to every reversal and blame a player or the Manager. Sometimes you need to look a bit deeper for reasons why we lost. A bit more mentally taxing but ultimately more satisfying.
I am finding it heavy going again on here at the moment but when I’m at the ground singing ‘we’ll support you ever more’ like after the Blackpool game I’ll be wondering how many others should be singing ‘we’ll support you til we lose.’

I’ll keep it simple.
Good Points:
1. Myhill played well in goal & commanded the area.
2. Olsson had a good match on his return.
3. St Peter looked lively.
4. Thomas had the beating of the full back all throught he game.
Not so Good Points (Trying to keep it positive !):
1. Tamas stood off their player far too much for the second goal.
2. Morrison lightweight & ineffective again.
3. Final delivery from Thomas into the box poor (again).
4. Lack of support in the box when we did get into good positions.
5. Bringing on Tchoyi for Mulumbu. I could understand taking off one of the defensive midfield players as we needed goals, but can’t understand why we didn’t bring on Cox.
6. Playing Bednar on the wide left when he came on. Surely he should have gone down the centre with St Peter pushing wide.

I agree with TRBH – no point at all in getting on players backs – or the Managers for that matter. We didn’t play that badly yesterday and but for some world class saves, it could have been a different story. let’s not forget, we are still a newly promoted side and Blackburn are not bad at home at all. Our home games are more important.
As for us not having the players to play 4-5-1, that’s a joke, tell Arsenal and Everton that. More like we haven’t got the players to play 4-4-2.

The game was on live here in the US and once again, by the time it was over, I was left feeling extremely disappointed and frustrated.
I agree with all of The Hoff’s points (number 49) and would also add:
1) The fact we played 5 in midfield and still got over-run in the first half in that area was disappointing. I didn’t think Scharner gave us much at all. This just made the Mulumbu substitution even more bewildering unless he was carrying a knock.
2) That’s probably the worst game Brunt has had for us all season. At times his positioning was awful and he seemed slow and lethargic.
3) Even though it was a clear penalty I didn’t see one Albion player making that point to the referee. Whilst I do not condone Gary Neville type antics, I do expect a bit of passion and desire from the lads. The fact there was none just about summed it up for me.
4) The fact we couldn’t take advantage of the fact Thomas skinned Salgado every time he ran at him is also disappointing. At this level, chances are few and far between and when you do identify a weakness you have to make it count. We didn’t.
We need to bring in a new face or two on loan just to freshen things up. Confidence is clearly low and certain players are way off form. We looked toothless in the final third simply because Pete had no support. Dorrans will hopefully be fit for Wigan and can play in the hole and Pablo should come in for Tamas. Any new loan additions will be a bonus.

NY,
Players shouldn’t have to get in the referee’s face like Manchester Utd do, The officials are out there to do their job and should do it to a decent standard.

New manager required. I think Jack would fill the bill with his extensive knowledge of the game. Snap him up before he goes to Wolves to replace Mad Mick!!!!!!

It’s all doom and gloom on here to start with but at least the mood gets brighter with some positive posts towards the end.
11, Steve Briscoe – Sack the manager. Get real mate!!! You must be a Wolves fan as no sane Albion fan would ask for this. We all realise WBA is currently a work in progress and as such there will be hiccups along the way.
As for yesterday’s game. Yes it was disappointing but there were also positives to take away from it. We can all see that Jimmy Morrison is struggling for form at the moment. And that Tamas didn’t have his best game but Blackburn are a decent enough side so there is no shame in losing in the manner we did (a screamer of an o.g. and a wonder strike).
P.S. Forget everything I just said. Let’s sack everyone.

56 JTH, if you read my post I actually say that I do not condone Gary Neville antics. However, I didn’t see one of our players even ask the referee if he was sure it was outside the box yesterday, which it clearly wasn’t.
You can make a point without having to be in someone’s face, only we didn’t and that’s what was disappointing for me. If we had a true leader on the field he could have at least asked the question so we don’t look like soft touches.
I agree the standard of refereeing this season has been awful considering the Premiership holds itself out to be the best domestic league in the world, however, sometimes you have to represent yourselves and not just role over. You can also do this without resorting to Man United type tactics.

I know it’s tough when we’re getting the wrong results, but we have to keep it together. The fact is,even if we spend a few million on two or three players, there’s no guarantee that the results will go exactly as we want them to,even after making those signings.Look at the other Midland clubs-villa,blues,and even wolves have spent millions on new players, and despite them all being in the prem. last season, where are they now?-below us!
So we have a Chairman who has been praised by many for the way he has developed the club over the last ten years,we have a Manager who was the best thing since sliced bread a couple of months ago,and we have a playing squad who are a hundred times better than the one we had in the 90′s-so let’s just cut the whinging, stick together, get behind the team, and try to squeeze all we can out of what we have for the rest of the season.
And for all the doom and gloomers-our kid lives in Devon, which is great if you like the seaside-but when it comes to football, they can choose between Plymouth,Torquay or Exeter (with all due respect to these clubs). So just cheer up,life’s too short!

Ny,
Whilst I agree with you to a certain extent, my point is the referee was in spitting distance away from the infringement, if he couldn’t see that then he is of very low standard and his assistant is very unfit, he should have been up with play, don’t forget he only works half the length of the line. thanks for your reply.

Why we’re debating officials, Sky should sack Andy Gray and Richard Keys. Ron Atkinson was sacked, or isn’t Sexism so bad as Racism?. Just a thought.

62. The best football bar in the city is Nevada Smith’s on 3rd avenue and 11th street. McCormacks is also pretty decent on 3rd avenue and 27th street. There aren’t many of us in NY. Welcome.
