Albion boss won’t be rushed to buy

James Hurst has signed an improved Albion contract as boss Roberto Di Matteo ruled out panic-buying.

Defender Hurst penned a two-and-a-half-year deal as a reward for his rapid rise into the first-team squad since his return to The Hawthorns from Portsmouth last summer.

But the Baggies remain locked in a race against time to sign attacking reinforcements following John Carew’s decision to join Stoke instead of moving to the Black Country.

“We have three or four targets and we’re still working on them,” said Di Matteo. “The window closes at the end of the month but we can only do our best and no more than that.

“There is always a little bit of a hectic period towards the end of the window. “But I always said I don’t just want to bring a player in for the sake of it.

“If we believe that he can improve the team, help us and give us different options that makes sense, otherwise it doesn’t make sense.

“John Carew’s a Stoke City player now.

“We got 25 points without any help from him so we’ll just keep going our way. Our priority is still to bring in a striker just to give us some more options.”

Hurst has been handed improved terms after a spell that has seen him make Carling Cup and Premier League appearances for the Baggies.
He returned to Albion, where he learned his trade from the age of nine, following two years away at Fratton Park.

Sporting director Dan Ashworth said: “It’s been well documented that he joined us as a young boy and then left for another club. “But we gave him another chance here by taking him back on the final day of the summer transfer window and since the moment he walked through the door, he’s been a model young professional.

“He’s worked really hard, does extra training on afternoons and he has seen the fruits of his labour with Robbie drafting him into the first team.”

Ishmael Miller will complete his loan move to QPR today. He will move to Loftus Road for three months, although Albion will be able to recall him after the first 28 days.

    Roberto,
You’re right, No point in buying the same chess pieces we already have. Yes,it would be nice to have the type of player that would add another string to our bow, so do your best, we can ask for no more.
Thank the rest of the staff for not over spending on Carew. Thankyou.

i think it is obvious a fresh face up front would help our campaign. But the player that will improve us do not grow on trees within our budget. I get bored of reading negative remarks about JP and co when although careful with the pennies has brought us forward as a club!!! Two strikers were brought in pre season and unfortunately MAF has failed to live up to his previous visit to the club, Miller has again been blighted with injury so for gods sake give the club a break!!! Come on my stars in in stripes and lets get six points from the next two potentially winnable games

It’s not the biggest problem we have as we are scoring goals. I just think try out Roman and Cox.

We already have MAF, Rueben Reid, Marcus Haber, Roman Bednar, Chris Wood and Ishmael Miller not doing the job of scoring goals, so any new striker will have to be carefully considered. Not sure why we don’t approach players in December and say to them “if the two clubs can agree a price and you pass a medical, would you sign for WBA on 1st January ?” ; then we would maybe avoid this scramble to find a second or third choice.

No.1) read your threads recently and you are without doubt a) a fortune teller, b) a football genius and c) a dingle. in all of your threads you attack west brom, predict the future but, never give us your profound opinion as who we should sign, what the management should do etc. hence the dingle tag. this is due to a complete lack of football nous my good chap. spurs were looking at diego forlan (a striker at athletico madrid) he wants £100k a week+)!! spurs have turned their attention elsewhere. blues wanted robbie keane (he demanded allegedly over 65k a week). teams buy or should buy who they can afford, west brom have always done that. just take the wolves strikers bodie and doyle £13m, between them 3 goals. st peter 8 goals in 16 games for £2. it’s very difficult to get it right. so be a good chap and become a samaritan, you’d be briliant. footnote, i’ve said all along i’d rather mbokani from monaco rather than carew. i’d be very happy then. forza albion

If your recent 46 page coverage of the Dingle’s 1-0 win over a demoralized Chelsea, applying the same standards just 1 column would be in order today me thinks, probably won’t see the light of day but we’re used to it.

I don’t think there is any need to get stressed up! We have strikers who can score goals if they are provided with the right service. If we play as a team with determination & support for each other we’ll be fine. If not for silly suspensions & injuries i believe we’d be up there because we “ARE” good enough!!

Kev, does this mean that Maximillian has now left the famed ‘couch’? If it’s free, could you cook for two more and I’ll bring TMH over for supper. That couch and sweet nothings whilst ‘vetting’ her qualifications……
PS: There are 6 Saturdays and 1 Sunday in a retard’s week,(acknowledgement to Ali G), so I do know the match is tomorrow.
Hatfield, give our coaches and scouts a bit of credit aer kid. If it were that simple, they’d do it. If Carew does the biz for Stoke, there’ll be howls from the ‘we don’t do enough’ group. If he doesn’t, the ‘other lot’ will be telling us they ‘told us so’.
We shall never know how well he’d have done for us. Er, Stoke are losing at the moment!

Why is the panic mode kicking in again?
It happened in the summer, then took shape and turned out quite well?
RDM & DA have my confidence in them. Why buy something U don’t really want, just 4 the sake of it.
Still a few days to become active.
We may end up with the perfect option, if it becomes available late on.
If nothing comes up, I’m quite confident we have enough there already, with injuries clearing up.
The way we move the ball and chances we create, we just need the midfielders to chip in more goalwise.
Feeeeeeeeling 4 them down the road though.

And while we’re on the subject of spending. I wonder how many Man City fans were happier before the Arab money?

I’ve watched City numerous times on TV this season and it’s always the same, I’m drooling at the thought of all of the World class players on display only to end up disappointed by what is usually a boring, sterile game of football. They are top quality players and they do show flashes of brilliance but there is no passion there.

When they played us there was a twenty minute spell when we couldn’t get the ball off them but apart from that they looked very ordinary. I wonder what would have happened if we’d gone in front, would they have the spirit to come back?

I know some will say that they would settle for being at the top fighting to win the League but would they? I see Man City and wonder if their fans are thinking, where are the Micah Richards and Michael Johnsons that have a connection to the club that extends beyond their pay packets.

It seems to me it’s a bit like winning the Lottery. You can buy anything you want but risk losing your friends, your soul and all the things that really matter in your life.

I’m very proud of my club and what we’ve achieved and the way we’ve done it. I resent the way the media dismisses us but I feed off that resentment. I love it on the odd occasion that we stuff it to the ‘glamour clubs’ and become the party poopers. Just like rich parents can’t buy their children happiness, I don’t think any team of players that some billionaire jetted in to buy us could give me the pleasure the win at Arsenal did. No matter how much they cost.

In my experience gained being the self elected head doctor on these pages I’ve come to the conclusion that there is absolutely no hope what so ever in your sad case.
What is the point of your post? it may turn out that you finish higher than us,I don’t think so but it could happen. At the moment to try and give the impression that you hold the high ground just makes you look the idiot you truly are.
JP may only have three shillings and sixpence but that’s more than enough for us to buy a player that’s better than anything you’ve bought over the last 12mths and as you know from past experience we don’t need to spend 5/6/7 million to find premiership quality, unlike your scouting system which spends that sort of money on championship quality players.
I know three shillings and sixpence is more than you spend on your pitch every month so if it comes to the push and we don’t spend it all in January,I’ll ask him to lend you some so you can buy a new wheel for your horse and cart, then you can come over the border to Dartmouth park,I think it’s still being refurbished and I’m sure you can have some of the old turf to improve your pitch.

    AJM
I’m not one who’s paranoid about every negative post being a Dingle but in your case I truly hope you are because it would be unbelievable if you are a Baggies fan,a case that even I would struggle with.

Spot on about Man City and our win at the Emerates. Great post.
Blues at Man U and Wigan today got hammered out of sight. Wigan could well have been beaten by double figures. We picked up points there. Don’t think Blues losing Dann for the rest of the season will help them at all – much like Olsson often steadies our ship – Dann has been terrific for them the last two years.
On the transfer front James “Can’t cut it in the SPL” Beattie is apparently back on the Radar. Now I did want him in the summer but he has proved beyond doubt since going to Ibrox that he is now a journeyman looking for the last pay day.Good job they don’t listen to me. I’d rather have KP or even Earnie back than Beattie now.
Hurst has been working hard and doesn’t seem out of place.
As for strikers, I’d consider Owen but only because of his incredible scoring record at the Hawthorns already.
JtH I agree why waste money on buying players for the sake of it.
Hopefully we’ve had our worst spell of this season over Christmas and New Year and in what remains I think we will have enough to pick up the points to ensure we finish comfortably above the drop zone.
It’s easy to blame JP when other teams are splashing out. He’s on a hiding to nothing with some of youz. If we sign no one and go down SACK JP; if we splash the cash and go down sack JP, DA and RDM. These are dingle views.
As for Lonely how many pennies will he have to rub together when looking for the funding for his Championship season ticket next May.

Sometimes to not act desperately can add the confidence in the sqaud; that the position they have achieved so far in this league is one they are capable of maintaining.
    Keep Calm and Carry On.

Let’s just stay positive and ignore the doom and gloomers.
