Albion face up to John Carew snub
Friday 21st January 2011, 12:30PM GMT.
Albion today went back to the drawing board in their striker hunt after Villa star John Carew delivered a massive blow by choosing Stoke over the Baggies.
Head coach Roberto Di Matteo faces a major rethink in his search for a new forward after Carew chose a loan move to the Potteries over a switch to the Black Country.
The giant Norwegian turned down the Baggies late last night after they had spent all of yesterday battling with Stoke for his services.
His loan move to the Britannia Stadium has left boss Roberto Di Matteo and sporting director Dan Ashworth with 11 days to land one of their alternative targets.
Carew informed the Baggies of his decision at 10pm yesterday after spending two hours at the club’s training ground and passing a medical yesterday afternoon.
The 31-year-old has spent the morning at Stoke and also passed a medical there after the Potteries club made a surprise late move for him.
Both clubs had agreed the same financial package with Villa to cover his wages, which are believed to be worth more than £50,000 a week, for a loan deal for the remainder of the season.
Sunderland were also linked strongly by Norwegian media outlets with strong links to the Carew camp but the Black Cats’ interest was never followed up.
