Fulham 3 Albion 0

Scott Carson’s gaffe floored Albion as the Baggies crashed to their fifth straight defeat at Premier League relegation rivals Fulham.

The goalkeeper let Simon Davies’ long-range strike through his hands in first-half injury time to spark a collapse after a battling opening 45 minutes from the injury-ravaged Baggies.

Clint Dempsey’s 55th minute header doubled Fulham’s lead, before Brede Hangeland made it 3-0 nine minutes later.

Before Carson’s error the visitors were in the game, but defeat leaves them just two points off the drop zone.

And their defensive woes increased when Marek Cech limped off after 31 minutes following a challenge from John Pantsil.

Head coach Roberto Di Matteo’s plans had already been wrecked after he was robbed of four key defenders.

Jonas Olsson (Achilles), Paul Scharner (illness), Gabriel Tamas (suspension) and Steven Reid (knee) were all sidelined.

It forced Gonzalo Jara and Gianni Zuiverloon into the centre together, while James Hurst made his Premier League debut at right-back.

Albion were rocking on five minutes when Chris Baird’s long ball found Diomansy Kamara and Carson reacted well to parry his snap-shot.

The Cottagers started well but Peter Odemwingie almost shocked the hosts after 13 minutes, when goalkeeper David Stockdale claimed his deflected drive at the second attempt.

But it was brief respite and the hosts’ penalty appeals were waved away on 16 minutes when Youssouf Mulumbu clattered into Dempsey.

For all Fulham’s possession Albion should have gone ahead on 18 minutes, when Chris Brunt’s pass split the hosts’ defence only for Jerome Thomas to shoot tamely one-on-one with Stockdale from 18-yards.

Cech then limped off after 31 minutes to be replaced by Nicky Shorey.

Seconds later, Zuiverloon blocked Dempsey’s close-range effort before Davies volleyed wide and Graham Dorrans’ 35-yard drive flashed over.

Damien Duff saw his low shot deflect wide five minutes before the break and Hangeland headed the resultant corner inches wide.

But, in first-half injury time, Albion’s resistance was broken when Dickson Etuhu robbed Mulumbu – with a hint of a foul – to feed Davies and the Welshman’s shot from 30-yards flew through Carson’s arms and into the top corner.

The captain should have done better with his gaffe undoing all of Albion’s fine first-half work.

Boosted, Fulham started the second period strongly and Duff’s drive whistled inches wide before Dempsey doubled the Cottagers’ lead on 56 minutes, heading in Davies’ corner.

Worse was to follow when Hangeland nodded in unmarked nine minutes later from another Davies corner to make it 3-0 and seal the game.

To their credit, Albion pressed and Chris Brunt shot narrowly over with 15 minutes remaining, but they couldn’t recover.

At the risk of upsetting the clique which is the Scott Carson fan club and appear to dominate these comments, I’m sorry, but this man is, in my opinion, the worst goalkeeper to wear an Albion shirt since I can remember. You simply cannot allow a man, who makes mistakes on such a regular basis, to continue playing in such a crucial posistion in the team. Unless dropped, he will take us down almost singlehandedly. Any back four that plays in front of him will always be nervous, just watch his performances for England. If he was any good he would be in the Liverpool first team. I say to his fans, wake up and smell the coffee. Never mind all the sarcastic comments about lets blame Scotty for the VAT rise and the solar eclipse etc etc, he’s had his chance, it’s now time for him to go. That is sadly the reality, which many fans strangely seem reluctant to admit.

How must the team feel when their efforts are undermined by this clown.
How much longer cab RDM keep playing him?
He chucks one in and then two headers in the six yard box, the first of which was right above him but he didn’t jump!!!!! Surely he cannot play against Reading? On a positive note I thought the young lad at the back played very well.

There’s so many things I could say,but the amount of thoughts I have would probably fill a book,so I will just repeat what I said the other day-we’re now in January,so apart from players like Olssen and Tamas due back soon, the club have an opportunity to bring in others to strengthen the squad,so maybe the best time to give an opinion will be at the end of the month. As fans,we don’t have direct control over the really important stuff,so it’s gonna be down to the Chairman and Manager’s decisions, plus the attitude and performance of the players.Let’s just hope that they all give the same commitment that most of us fans have towards the club that we love so much.

To all the Carson lovers, how can you defend this guy any longer? To all the people wanting him dropped let me say this. RDM sees more of Myhill than any of us, he is also aware of Carsons shortcomings he sees what we see, so there can only be one answer. He dosen’t rate Myhill as being any better! So what do we do? Are we not capable of sorting out a deal for Shay Given on loan? Man City certainly won’t let him go to any of the clubs they see as competitors, and don’t mention wages, Cardiff and Bellamy for example!

The denominator we all have in common is wanting West Bromwich Albion to win and be successful. To win and be successful you have to put your best team onto the pitch and be well prepared and organised. At present, we are doing none of the above.

I think it’s clear for everyone to see that Carson has lost his confidence. As a result he’s making mistakes that he wouldn’t usually make and it’s costing the team dearly. Do I think Scott can get his confidence back? Yes, absolutely but he should get it back in the reserves, slowly and surely. He’s not a bad goalkeeper, he’s just having a bad run and conceding poor goals.

I’m not saying Myhill will be the saviour, but he now deserves his chance and if he proves himself then he keeps getting the shirt.

The other crucial part to this is the fact Scott is also captain. Considering his confidence is shot to pieces, this is not good for the team because unless you’re Winston Churchill you’re not likely to want to inspire people around you when you’re feeling as low as a snakes belly. This isn’t a knock at Carson, I just think the team will be better served at present if an outfield player with more experience is given the armband i.e. Ollson (when fit) or maybe Brunt.

We were truly unlucky with injuries tonight and Tamas’s rash challenge against Blackburn looks even more ridiculous in hindsight, but you have to start with a firm foundation and we simply don’t have it at the moment.

Unfortunately Odemwingie is also suffering from a lack of confidence and it may be worth tinkering with the forward line and going 4-4-2 against Reading just to shake things up.

We have 10 days to re-group before the Blackpool game which is now a must win in my opinion. It’s imperative we start the game with our best 11.

Yes, Carson dropped a brick last night and should have saved the first goal. I don’t think anyone, least of all Carson, would deny this. Does this justify the almost vicious comments by the Carson-Haters? All you smarty-pants critics could pick a winning team from a squad decimated by injury and suspension? Did anyone really think that back line would hold out for 90 minutes? Then Cech was cruelly taken out by a Pants tackle and no foul given. Even DLB has given up picking a team to put on here. In crude terms, ‘We ain’t got no defenders’! So come on, all you knowalls, let’s hear from you how you would organise a winning team from the players available. Then announce who you will blame next, BEFORE the results come in. (Er, JP, get your armour plated suit out of hock mate).

What a nightmare carson is never more than average. He never has been man of the match due to a string of fantastic saves. He cost us against Man Utd as he was flat footed with rooneys goal. He does not dominate his 6 yard box, his positioning is poor and would nt inspire me as a captain!!! If I was Boaz I would be handing in a transfer request… i can see Boaz playing on Saturday against readsing but being dropped against Blackpool. As we are so depleted loan signings should be made sooner rather than later. We need a proper right back at least 2 forwards of which one should be able to hold the ball up and stay in the middle of the pitch. As for some of our squad Miller, Mattock, Mettie, R Reid should just be sold to make funds available. Come on Jezza pull out some signings.

Whats annoying he will be dropped for the FA cup and then walk straight back into team. Thats all down to DTM. Why cant the manager see what most of us saw signs of last season. I’m not sure we can now turn it around, heads have droppped, convidence is shattered and whilst we are on a big down other clubs are picking up confidence mostly from us (Blackburn Fulham). We have to hope others in the relegation battle do not obtain good replacements in January because it looks like we are going to be stuck with a stubburn manager and a captain and keeper who would look in place on the Titanic.

We have the worst defensive record in the league and if people think that Carson is not to blame for some of this then they need to get a grip.
I am starting to wonder if RDM is out of his depth at this level, 9 defeats in the last 12 just ain’t good enough and not unlike Mowbray he is not changing his tactics or team selections.Particularly the inability to drop Captain Calamity Carson.

Morning all, not a great start to the new year and perhaps those maps of Madrid and Milan are now giving way to a map of Middlesbrough! Pantomine time last night, with a clown in goal and 4 dwarfs as a defence. RDM had little alternative last night with the defence but let’s be honest – we are in trouble. We need to get Olssen back (I see is could be back against Blackpool). Without him, we have conceeded 24 goals in 12 games and won just twice. Open you eyes, this not unlucky, it is down to a lack of quality at either ends of the pitch. Without Olssen, the back 4 is not good enough and PO is not as good as we thought he was. It all well and good saying that we are playing well but playing well is scoring goals at one end and keeping clean sheets at the other. I believe that is how you win games. Captain Calamity has to be dropped. The guy is costing us a goal a game with his total lack of ability of commanding his six yard box. Most decent keepers would have cost a fist to last nights 2nd and third goals but Calamity stays on his line. I do not really care about the Reading game, we must avoid further injuries and suspensions. The next 4 homes games are masstive, Blackpool, Wigan, West Ham and Wolves. A full team and maximum points is a must.
Overall, I have no stong feelings for or against JP but I think that this is a defining month for him and the club. We clearly require a centre half to partner Olssen and a decent full back. Jara and the Loon are not good enough and of course we need a goal scorer. Let’s end on a positive, as all is clearly not lost this season, but we need to get everyone fit back to playing how we were earlier in the season. I really do want this to be a happy new year!!!

We all want the team to do well but Scott is not good enough. I ask the question when has he actually earned us points? I cannot remember one occasion. I can however remember lost of games he has cost us. I agree the back four last night was forced on us through circumstance, however we looked pretty comfortable until the 1st goal, all that effort undone by Scott. I also hold him responsible for the second goal, it was right above him and he jumped about 2 inches off the floor. You have been watching football for a long tiome as I have and Scott is fundamentally flawed as a keeper which does not instill confidence in the back four. Unless we change it I fear the worst. It also adds pressure at the other end as we know we need to score two or three to have a chance of winning.

If i was poor and unable to perform in my job i would be replaced.

You Miss the point cyril, who knows if that defense would have held out, maybe, maybe not, maybe we steal a goal and then the pressure mounts on them. But if we concede an awful goal like that what chance do we have, what confidence does it give the players.

I would prefer daniels to be in goal than carson.

If we continue to shoot ourselves in the foot like this we will see the best team we have had in years (brunt, mulumbu, olson) leave and have to start over.

Well what a complete and utter shambles last night, how can some of you on here keep defending Carson? he’s a complete joke and was to blame for at least 2 of the goals last night. He cannot jump, catch or punch a ball cleanly and has to be the worst keeper in the Prem.
The back four played reasonably well for a patched up defence with no true central defenders so I wouldn’t criticise them but it shows the lack of depth in the squad.
Then Odemwingie, Thomas, Brunt and Dorrans are all lacking confidence in front of goal as was shown when Thomas was put clean through with only the keeper to beat and hit it straight at him and where was Morrison last night – his name was on the team sheet but did he play??????
I don’t hold much hope for QUALITY new signings as we all know what JP’s like and he won’t get his cheque book out, got to look after his pension afterall!!!

I’ve spent the last 18 months defending Carson and I hold my hands up that perhaps he needs to be taken out of the firing line. However that decision is Roberto Di Matteo’s and not ours.

If RDM decides to pick him against Blackpool, which is now a massive game, then the supporters have to get behind whoever’s on the pitch whether they agree with it or not.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion and that’s fair enough, but there are a few people on here and elsewhere who seem far too pleased that Carson had a mare.

I’ll still argue that these supposed howlers he has every week are a little less frequent than a few people make out.

Smethwick- If Carson’s the worst keeper ever to pull on an Albion shirt, then I take it you don’t remember our pre-Premiership years.

Next 4 home games- Blackpool, Wigan, West Ham, Wolves. The following 3 home games- Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea. Have your moan or whatever, but those next 4 home games are massive, the last thing we need is boo boys. Get behind and lets get 10-12 points.

I’m not in the carson haters club, far from it and i can recount many points he has saved us, but and its a big but, at the moment their is little confidence around him. And i’m not talking on the terraces, im talking on the pitch. There have been several incidents of late when its obvious that derfenders feel that they have to deal with situations because scott fails to do so. I feel all he needs is a spell in the reserves to bolster himself and get his game back. We all knew that RDM would have a problem in dropping him because of the captaincy, but you have to look at the facts now and Boaz deserves at least a chance of games to show his capabilities.
I’m not going to be over crirical of our squad last night, they are savaged by injury, and very short of confidence, this is the time that RDM earns his wages by lifting and re inspiring his troops for the next league game. Carson had a mare- Yes. Is he the reason we’ve lost 5 on the bounce?- No. He may be a factor but he is not the sole reason e.g. we can’t defend set pieces, we keep missing chances when on top. Lets have a bit of perspective, not start a witch-hunt.

I think it is time we all got realistic, we over achieved at the start of the season and are now in freefall. RDM must now show what he is made of… the question is how bad do WBA & JP want to stay in the prem…. that are a lot of poor teams in the league this year, so we will never have a better chance to stay up.
On the question of Carson… there surely is only one answer!!! Ever since he has come into the team we have looked dodgey on set pieces.. whatever centre half apiring we have had we just don’t look confident, organised or strong. The common denominator during this period has been Carson.. like many others who have commented he does not instil any confidence in the defence. Also I’m surprised nobody has commented on how many early goals we concede… anything to do with the fact that Carson spends all pre-match dealing with the mascots!!! I’m sure he is not mentally prepared correctly and this is largely due to being captain.
It’s now time for drastic changes. RDM has recently shown an inability to change tactics during games, he insists and a policy of one man up front, the result is we don’t keep the ball long enough.
However, it’s not too late… Blackpool is a must win game… just like Bolton, Blackburn & Fulham… we must stop letting in soft goals which means we are chasing games.
Come on you Baggies.. show us what you’re made of.

Different Manager, different centre halves, different full backs, even a holding midfield player but why are we leaking goals particularly from set peices in 6yds box – common factor the goalkeeper. Now RDM must take him out of the firing line before the fans destroy him totally and he our survival fight. His mistake deflated our team & supporters but lifted the Fulham fans & players. Most of the above are correct. Carson does look woefully short of confidence. Any defence needs a strong commanding keeper. Unfortunately our present encumbant is neither. We need a fit squad and we will be fine. Our season will be defined over the next 4 homegames. As is always the case you need to beat the teams around you. Before the season started we would have taken our current league position. (if not 5 defeats on the bounce!!) But the table shows points not current form. I believe we will beat Blackpool, and pick up atleast 9 points from those 4 games. (forever the optomist!!) RDM and team will sort it out. Tamas, Olssen and Sharner will of course make a huge difference, but we need more than that. Was it only about 5 weeks ago we had 22 points, sat somewhere 6th in the Prem and our ‘spiky’ Baggies were whooping it up because of our neighbours on ‘the dark side’ ? Now we are falling like a stone, we turn in on ourselves and the vulnerable are stripped of ability and confidence.
We can ALL see that we have problems. BIG problems. We haven’t got a centre half fit and available. The goalkeeper is a dart board and now riddled with holes. Would any of you like to be Myhill right now? A potential Batman, a Messiah, his coming will cure all ills. Goals will cease to be shipped in, the makeshift defenders will all play blinders because Carson is in a taxi to…??? Get real for Heaven’s sake.
We desperately need our big lads back and fit to play. Olsson got ‘lamped’ occasionally on here by a few, yet now he too will cure all ills. I am his biggest fan, but he’ll need game time. Some are even now turning on RdM. Why? He can’t prevent injuries. The suspensions, yes. There he needs to fine them and heavily. This Baggies site is no better than the Wulfie’s site when things go wrong. I am not a fan of the Prem, never have been. All money-driven institutions end up corrupt and this one certainly is. Refs afraid to offend the Big 4, tackling that is nasty at best, ‘sport’ it ain’t!
We are still a well run club, but a medium sized fish in shark infested waters. Don’t turn on the personnel when they need you most!

I think you miss the point with Carson , if a defence does not have faith in it’s keeper then they start doing things to compensate for him , hence they get deeper and so does the Midfield. Basically the lack of confidence spreads through the team.
RDM really has made a rod for his own back by making him Captain , if he has the guts to grasp the nettle and drop him we will see, but if he does not i really fear the worst.
As for Myhill i should think he is busting a gut for his chance , if he is not, then he is in the wrong game altogether.

Calm down. Bad run yes. Worst for 6 years yes BUT…
    1) It is not May – a bad run in April would be costly. This may prove to be a good time to have a bad run – as long as it ends soon.
    2) A makeshift back four deserves some credit for the effort they put in last night. They had no experience of playing together as a unit and but for a clanger from Carson would have got us to half time 0-0. With no height in the box the aerial threat was always going to be there. But would you rather Cox and Brunt play centre back and then get done on the turn or possibly another red card.
    3) The transfer window is open.Maybe a scorer in and also Olsson and Tamas are returning to add height and order to the back 4 for the Blackpool game.
    4) We are still in with a great opportunity to achieve the season’s objective. Don’t let that go. Finishing 17th or above was always going to be an aim that was hard.

I do however think there should be no debate about Carson. Myhill was bought so to keep pressure on Carson. Carson is out of form. If it was Dorrans, or Fortune we would have no truck with making the change to give Cox or someone else a chance. Take him out the firing line and give Boaz a run for a while. That’s why we bought him. It’ll do everyone including Scott some good.

Let’s stay calm and keep the faith. And even if the worst happens we should still be proud that on the most part this squad and manager are giving it a real go this time around.

If Carson never made errors he would be playing for England and definately not playing for us … Even so I agree with the majority and think either Myhill needs a chance or if he isn’t good enough maybe a better keeper should be bought like Alex Smithies. In respect to signings it looks as though the Carew deal is almost done, Talks started in mid December and have been ongoing.

As an avid reader, if not a prolific contributor to this site I have read all of the foregoing and what is plainly obvious is the real concern everyone feels about throwing away our best ever chance of achieving something in this division. This manifests itself in some as anger at who or whatever, others attempt in my opinion to defend the indefencable, and then there’s Cyril, normally so wise and articulate. Sir, just because people indulge in what they perceive as constructive criticism dosen’t mean they are turning on the team or the club i’m sure we all know the value of whole hearted support. One last point wouldn’t it be fantastic if we the faithful knew exactly what JP and RDM really thought?

Warren & Cyril, I am very often in total agreement with what you have to say but some of your comments today are way off the mark. Warren re your point that you believe that some supporters are happy what Carson had a mare, I hope is way off the mark because they cannot be genuine supporters if they really want their keeper to cost us games. Cyril, I do not see supporters on here turning against the players or each other. They all have opinions. I do now believe that Carson needs a break. Whether Myhill is any better- at the moment, I cannot comment but give the lad a go against Reading. The cup does not matter to me, the league does so let’s see how he does against Reading. I for one was uncertain about what Scharner had to offer in midfield. I think we are clearly seeing now that the guy must do something because the midfield looks better with him in it rather than without him. I would certainly consider resting Brunt, Dorrans, Shcarner and Mulumbu against Reading. Further injuries and suspensions to key players from now on could cost us dearly. I strongly believe that with Olssen returning and getting a settled back 4, Scharner back in midfield and possibly a new right back and forward we are more than capable of comfortably staying in this league. We have been badly hit by injuries and foolishly hit by suspensions but wih a cople of additions and a full squad, RDM will get it right staring with Blackpool. Irrelevant of who is picked, we must continue to support the team on the field.

Has i have said in a previous post, the goalkeeping coach needs changing.Scot Carson is a clone of Dean Kiely. If you cant see this there must be something wrong,i spotted it a long time ago.He stays on his line, does’nt command his area and hid kicking is terrible. It all looks so familiar, because he’s had all of Kiely’s bad habits coached into him.He does’nt organize his defence properly and does’nt communicate enough.I would also send him for an eye test, because if he cannot see an unmarked striker(Hernandez)right infront of him,he must be blind.

I was a fan of Carson for a while defending him almost every mistake he made hoping he would eventually put it right. However this season is now becoming obvious that he needs to be dropped. I fear it will end in another Zuberbühler situation where the fans will turn. Di Matteo needs to take him out of the firing line and play Myhill.

Without Jonas we have not got a clue at the back!

I can’t argue with you it’s a good post, as is AMS at 39. I am probably wrong in suggesting that people wanted Carson to have a mare, perhaps I should’ve said that some were quick to claim vindication when he did.

There is though an argument that some people are being completely irrational about this. I’ve so far read that Carson is the worst keeper that’s ever wore an Albion shirt- perhaps if you only started watching this season- and also that he’s solely to blame for our recent demise, which is complete rubbish, there are various factors of which he is perhaps one.

I think the general consensus seems to be that Carson needs to be taken out of the firing line- fair enough. But ultimately the decision is RDM’s. The hyper-critical nature of some of these posts suggests the knives are out big time, but if Myhill comes in and has a shocker (of which he had a couple last year for Hull) then Carson remains our only choice (barring signings obviously), so it would be foolish to crucify him at such a pivotal point in the season when we need strong performances.

    Baggie Dad

That last bit links into your point, agreed that harsh words on here don’t automatically transmit to the terraces on matchday, but there remains an element capable of giving Carson a hard time. I’ve been at numerous games where I’ve heard people hurling abuse at Carson, where you get the impression he’s one small mistake away from boos. As you rightly suggest, that’s the last thing we need currently.

    John Dillinger

To the same old people who seem to think that we who have been knockin carson for weeks makes us less fans than others here’s my point. While confidence was high earlier on in the season when we were 6th we had a solid defence and that included carson, HOWEVER if you looked through the hysteria of OUR great start Carson’s decision making was not on par with the rest of the team (shall i come or shall i stay) we all know this be honest! NOW we have backs to the wall and a bit more pressure his lack of leadership and confidence in his own ability is showing even more and this does not give the rest of the team much confidence in their keeper if you have played the game at any standard then you know your on the backfoot before you’ve even started when you have a dodgie keeper and so do the opposition. As I’m sure I’m bracketed with the ‘Scott Carson Fan Club’ and I’m sure someone said that some of us had disappeared from the site today (it’s called having a job actually.)

There is no Scott Carson Fan Club. There are, I’m glad to say people that write on here and don’t like witch hunts. Any older supporters will remember an unfortunate young lad called Scott Darton. Never going to be a great player but always gave his best and so was deservedly crucified by some of our wonderful fans.

I’ve no special allegiance to Scott Carson other than that he plays for us. I said after the United game that I thought he could have done better with the first goal and again I can’t argue that he should have saved the first goal last night. It is the fact that he is blamed unreasonably for almost every goal we concede that gets peoples backs up. The blame Scott Carson jokes are used with a sense of irony as the only way left to fight back against the hate brigade.

I’ve been accused in the past of attacking people I don’t agree with on here. My pet hate is not people disagreeing with my views but the ones that make unsubstantiated and personal attacks on staff at the club. There are some fantastic posts on here that I don’t agree with but they make their point without being aggressive or plain daft. That’s part of what it should be about, I’m trying to affect other people’s views but I’m open to them changing mine with wit and reason.

Last night was extremely disappointing, but to describe it as “woeful” beggars belief!

The back four had NEVER played together before – Cech the most senior player was injured early on. We have a goalkeeper who is unpredictable and doesn’t breed confidence which also impairs defending.

Some wrong decisions made by players in my opinion were down to fatique and some due to inexperience at this level – compare the two squads not table position!

Replace Carson with Myhill would not make a huge difference – I think there are better keepers around at a reasonable price. Peter O needs to be taken under someone’s wing and coached into being a better team player; the potential is there. I’ll be honest, stuff the FA Cup this year, focus on getting the squad physically and mentally up to speed before next league game.

Its all going pear shaped!!! Seems Albion suffer the same syndrome as the Wolves. When you play one of the top teams, i.e. Arsenal, Man utd, you/we are allowed to play your free flowing style of football and look quite good. When you/we play one of the struglers we drop to the lowest common denominator of football style and play. And we find that often we are second best at that game. Winning ugly and grinding out results is harder than they reckon. After a spanking like you had last night, it can go one of two ways, lose confidence or come out fighting.

My blood runs blue and white like the rest of you and I just cannot understand why we are once again in danger of throwing it all away by playing a dodgy keeper. He’s not to blame for everything, no one is saying that, but his mistakes are now starting to make us a laughing stock , and he is a liability . There must surely be a better option than him. What is it about him anyway? Why shouldn’t he be dropped ? He’s just a member of the team like anybody else and not bomb proof.

Although this is about last night’s game, almost all comments have been focused on Scott Carson,so I’ll just have my own tuppence worth. We all have our favourite players,I’ve never really gone for Albion goalkeepers, because I can’t think of many that have stood out over the years(although a few have been fairly decent). In Scott’s case,he’s made some howlers, and he’s had some good games, but like any player,if your form is being questioned, you know you could be dropped, and rightly so.I was as angry as anyone that he fumbled the ball last night, after the makeshift defence had put on a brave display, but without wanting to defend the guy’s performances,I don’t think personal attacks serve any purpose.I’m sure he goes out there hoping to do well,if he makes a mistake,it’s not a deliberate act.If you decide you want to be a pro. footballer,it’s still up to the club to give you a contract,AND make you the number one choice in the first team.If they make you Captain as well, that’s also their decision. You make yourself available for selection, but someone else picks you for the team,so if you do play, being called a Clown or Joker won’t improve your ability, but it will shatter your confidence, and probably cause nothing but bad emotions amongst his mates in the squad.By all means have your opinion, but also stop for a minute and imagine yourself standing in the shoes of the guy you’re slating-it will probably be an unpleasant experience.

When the going gets tough Scott Carson goes missing. As the captain this is not acceptable. With a makeshift defense in front of him it was up to him to lead by example and produce a top class professional performance. Unfortunately Scott Carson never plays a blinder, in fact he never looks more than average when the team is confident and playing well and all too often he lets the side down at crucial times. He should never have been made captain and he should now lose his place to Myhill and the armband presented to Olsson, our only natural leader. Enough time, money and patience has been wasted on Carson and I can’t see any improvement. If we stick with him it will cost us far more than he is worth as our Premiership status will be lost. Time to cut our losses, the axe must fall.

I’m sure Cyril or Jarrod will correct me if I am wrong, but wasn’t it Tony Godden who took over from the bionic goalie (John Osbourne) and was thrust into the first team early, John retired I think. Tony’s experience hadn’t got to the point where a goal could be “ignored”. By that I mean that you don’t dwell on it during the game, you get on and prevent the next one. Now Tony’s confidence was getting better, but if he let a ball in early then the tally could go global. He was a great keeper, just didn’t have enough time to get game hardened and most Baggie fans had standing repeat precriptions for tranquillisers. Scott’s confidence may now be shot and will need to be rebuilt, as will Peter’s, but whatever RDM and his team decides will be for the best for the team. Oh and as far as I can remember the only people who were ever booed by a Baagie’s fan was any opposition player who had inflicted a bad tackle or some other serious misdemeanour. And we never, ever booed our team.

Off topic, I also drifted off to sleep last night with thoughts of who would be in our team today if…

Osbourne, Johnson, Wile, Olsson, Brown A, Hope, Astle, Kaye, Frasier, Statham, Cunningham, Regis, Batson, Dorrens, Brunt, Kiswycki (I know, I can’t spell) and then I drifted off with a smile on my face.

TRBH and Cyril have articulated this better than I could, but it’s not about being in a Scott Carson fan club, it’s not about Scott Carson, it’s about the Albion and supporting anybody that pulls on that shirt.

I’m sorry if I’ve misunderstood. I understand what you’re saying in that criticism on here doesn’t necessarily equate to criticism in the ground, but sometimes it’s representative of it and we don’t want a Scott Darton, Phil Whitehead, Paul Williams or Paul Groves situation developing. From my experience of matches this season, that’s a distinct possibility with Carson. Those situations just alienate the players from the fans and there’s a risk it will adversely affect the desire of the players to play for the club, which has been good up to now under RDM.

We’ve got one of the biggest months in the club’s recent history coming up, we need to stay behind whoever RDM picks….and lets be honest, that could well be Carson whether we like it or not. There’s nothing to gain from crucifying him.

For the record, I’m not defending his mistake last night or for the Hernandez goal, they cost us dear. I’d also love us to sign Shay Given, but until such a day occurs (I can’t help think that won’t happen!!), we have to get behind whoever’s in goal on a matchday.

Finally I can echo TRBH’s point that this has been a good debate, largely due to the lack of intervening Wulfies provoking warfare. Have the E&S blocked them as we are on their sensitive threads maybe? Anyway, I hope you post again in the future Baggiedad!!

I don’t want to get rid of Carson. I do think he needs to give way to Myhill for a time so the two can create competition for that position. I think a little rivalry will spur Carson on and will give Myhill a chance to shine.

We need a striker and now we need a big strong centre half who knows how to defend a corner. I would love it if the Baggies could sign McGugan but as it stands, we have greater needs and signings are rare in January for us.

Our form is worrying and we need to have a good run now to clear ourselves from the scrap, but we have a strong side with class players. We need to keep a little faith rather than lose our heads like the Wolves. Get behind the team and we can blow the ball into the net for them. Apart from the Fulham game we’ve been playing well and with a little luck and a lot of heart we can reverse our fortunes.

Good point. If there’s one thing we’ve had up to now, it’s a great team spirit and we as fans are a part of that. I remember when Jonas had a go at some of the crowd for jeering Carson. Some of our fans weren’t happy with his reaction. We need this togetherness more than ever now, especially amongst the players but from us as well.

There are two reasons why this is even more important right now. Without wanting to sound like Shadrag, we have a horrendous injury problem defensively. It will improve but we must get behind whoever pulls on the shirt. When Gianni was recalled from Ipswich, someone on here said ‘anyone but Zuiverloon.’ Last night a couple of more Zoovs wouldn’t have gone amiss. He’s a Baggie let’s stop the sniping.

The other reason is referees. I know every fan thinks refs are against them but I doubt any other club is having a run like ours with poor decisions costing us so dear almost every game.
Starting with the Blackpool twerp Oliver, Foy’s penalty fiascos in the games against Stoke and United. Probably the most ridiculous and least publicised was Dowd’s ridiculous sending off of Tamas for an alleged dangerous tackle against Blackburn. The tackle was stupid in the extreme but dangerous?????? Worthy of a three game ban????? Even more so in the light of the Pantsil execution of Cech last night that wasn’t even deemed a foul.

I don’t want to get back onto the topic of incompetant, inept, inconsistent referees but we do need to develop a bunker mentality like Wimbledon had. Not to play like them but to stick together like they did.

We are Albion. Be proud of that.

I believe those slow reactions were the reason he failed to deal with the first Fulham goal. I’m sorry but you can’t keep making excuses for the bloke. Time to go I’m afraid. There are problems however elsewhere in the team no more so than midfield. Over the past few games there has been a growing tendency for other players to keep giving the ball to Dorrans who to be honest has not made the best use of it when gets it. Too often he runs into blind alleys and loses possession. The sooner Scharner can be restored to midfield the better. I am not saying that Dorrans should be left out but I believe that he and Morrison are not strong enough to play in the same team. I think RDM will have to play one or the other.

78&79′Baggie Girl’- You’ll have to do a lot better than that.I can see several BIG clues that suggest you are a non too clever wulf in disguise.Calling Carson a clown, being sympathetic with wolves injuries, and calling us West Brom instead of Albion are just a few that stand out.Anyway,Sidwell was close to joining West HAM (doh!!),any true Albion fan knows we have plenty of midfielders with more quality than him.I’ve told you wolves fans before,it just doesn’t suit you lot trying to be clever.

I actually agree with the majority of what you’ve written. I had perhaps wrongly mistaken your sharp criticism previously as an indication that you’d be leading the catcalls against Blackpool. Baggiedad rightly clipped my wings for that and I apologise.

However for the record, I’ve been going home and away since I was a mere boy and I never claimed Carson hadn’t made silly mistakes only that they were far less frequent than people were making out. I have seen last season’s DVD, although sadly it wasn’t in my Christmas stocking, nor was the calendar which I was expecting. Fortunately however I did receive the Miscellany book, which is a decent read if anyone’s wondering.

    Steve Briscoe

Di Matteo managed to rotate Cech, Shorey and Tchoyi over Christmas so that’s not necessarily true, plus he’s far more aware of the fitness levels of the players than we are.

As for defending, well that might be an argument if we had a team of tacklers who were 6ft 5, but we haven’t. I think I’m probably right in thinking 99% of Albion supporters support the style of football and RDM’s highly successful reign. We’ve proved it can be successful. You don’t have to park the bus to be able to defend a set piece. Remember Wolves are still beneath us.

    Baggie Girl

I don’t want to question your integrity, but these Carson guaranteed-game stories always make me laugh. What is it his agent has supposed to have said? Where’s the evidence? Were there some Albion fans privvy to the contract discussions?!! Perhaps Dan Ashworth invited them in to throw their tuppence in about what we should pay him. Also, I’ve searched for that Steve Sidwell story and can’t find anything beyond speculation. I doubt anyone would join Wolves ahead of other Premier League clubs at the moment for football reasons alone.

By the way, have Wolves won the Cup? The home page of the E&S features a special black section with ‘McCarthy salutes Wolves heroes’ emblazoned across the top. There was me thinking they were in the relegation zone….

77 Steve Briscoe- another not-very-clever-wulf? Let me see…..you say we should consider sacking Roberto (quite recently named Premiership Manager of the month?),you then say how bad our defence is(when we have SIX regular players out of action),then suggest more than once that we should watch what wolves are doing and follow their example?-and talk about us playing FIVE GAMES A WEEK??? I know the moderator is probably stopping the loud mouthed idiots from coming over here, but if you are in disguise,it helps if you have a few brain cells.

78 Baggie Girl(?)- Why are the wolves fans seeking you out? Is it to tell you that they won at home 1-0 by an own goal? Or to remind you that they are still behind Albion? And by the way,Sidwell was going to WEST HAM,not that WEST BROM club you mentioned. An easy mistake for an ‘Albion’ fan to make.

83 Warren- If Chelsea are still as bad when Albion play them at home,WE have a great chance of beating them (with proper goals).I look forward to the special blue and white striped home page when that happens….what?

Good point. If Scharner is fit for Blackpool I think we’ll need him more at CH but perhaps we could play Zoov or Hirst at RB and use Jara to protect the defence alongside Mulumbu. We always have to score at least two goals to win a game now and it’s putting added pressure on the forwards.

We have to stop giving away the early goals and a more solid midfield would help. We can always change this with subs as the game develops.
