Albion 1 Blackburn 3
Tuesday 28th December 2010, 5:10PM GMT.
Ten-man Blackburn executed the perfect smash and grab raid on Albion to condemn the Baggies to a third straight defeat.
Nikola Kalinic’s double – before he was sent off – and Mame Biram Diouf’s close range header moved Rovers above Albion in the Premier League.
Jerome Thomas had levelled in the first half for an Albion side, who dominated for much of the game, before Gabriel Tamas was also sent off with three minutes left.
Paul Scharner had earlier hit the bar and Gonazlo Jara saw his follow up effort cleared off the line in the second-half, as the Baggies pressed but they couldn’t find a way back.
Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo made two changes from Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Bolton, as Thomas replaced the suspended Chris Brunt while Nicky Shorey returned for Marek Cech.
But any hopes of a strong start were dashed just three minutes in when Blackburn edged ahead.
Morten Gamst Pederson’s curling pass picked out Kalinic, who was just onside, to burst down the left and, with goalkeeper Scott Carson in no man’s land, the striker picked his spot in the far corner.
It stunned Albion and they had been made to pay for a sluggish start but almost levelled seven minutes later.
Sharp passing between Jara and Peter Odemwingie saw the latter feed Graham Dorrans, but his angled effort was superbly turned behind by Paul Robinson.
However, the hosts were shaky at the back and Kalinic almost bagged another 15 minutes in when he fired over.
James Morrison was millimetres away from equalising soon after, when his 25-yard drive whistled wide, but Albion did level on 17 minutes.
Morrison refused to yield possession in the middle and found Somen Tchoyi on the right, for the Cameroon international to deliver a fine low cross for Thomas to turn in at the far post.
It was a fine goal and Albion began to find their rhythm, as they tried to turn the screw on Blackburn.
The Baggies started to toy with their visitors, handing out a passing lesson in the process, as they probed Rovers’ defence.
Thomas curled wide after swapping passes with Morrison just after the half hour, as the home side looked on the verge of a second.
Blackburn escaped a minute before the break after the ball pinballed in their box and the visitors were relieved to hear the half-time whistle.
Away goalkeeper Robinson was replaced by Mark Bunn at the break – who was in action immediately – to parry Odemwingie’s sharp near post effort behind two minutes after the restart.
But, for all Albion’s good play, they found themselves behind again seven minutes after the break thanks to a classic Blackburn set-piece.
Pedersen swung in a corner from the left and, when Ryan Nelsen headed back across goal, Kalinic had a simple task of nodding in from four yards.
Carson almost presented the Croatian with a hat-trick five minutes later, when he passed straight to the unmarked striker six yards out but recovered.
However, Rovers did grab a third on 62 minutes after Pedersen and El-Hadji Diouf combined for the latter to cross for Mame Biram Diouf ,who couldn’t miss.
Two minutes later and Albion were given a lifeline when Kalinic was sent off – the striker seeing red for reckless over the top challenge on Scharner.
Simon Cox immediately replaced Morrison and was instantly denied by Bunn, before putting the rebound over from close range.
Albion had the initiative but struggled to break down a stubborn Rovers defence and they were also reduced to 10 men three minutes from time.
Mame Biram Diouf turned Tamas and arrowed towards goal, only for the defender to crudely bring him down for a straight red card that ended Albion’s recovery hopes.

This was without question the worst I have seen us play this season!
Carson can not command his area,he can not kick to save his life, the whole team in general had a mare today.
if we continue to perform like this we WILL be joining the dingles in the championship next season.
JP must open the cheque book to help RDM we need new players and fast.

I was able to watch the Blackburn game as it was on live over here in the US and I’d like to make the following points:
1) At the moment, we look as weak and fragile at the back as we did in the Mowbray days.
2) We were undone by one long ball and two set pieces, which is basic stuff.
3) I’m not a Carson knocker, but he rarely comes off his line and should have done for the third goal as the cross was inside our 6 yard box which should be his territory. I thought he made the same mistake at Villa for their second too.
4) What was Tamas thinking? That was as stupid and reckless a challenge as Jara’s at Blackpool.
5) I know Olsson is out, but we should have the strength in depth to handle a very poor Blackburn team who were there for the taking today.
6) We badly need more firepower up front and some will hopefully arrive in the January transfer window even if it’s a loan move.
7) With a lot of the other results going against us i.e. teams at the bottom winning, it’s going to be a tight second half of the season where every point matters. Make no mistake, we’re in a relegation battle along with 10 other teams.

Bad day at the office and we need to get back on track quickly.
But it’s not as bad as some will try to make out.
I think we need to get back to basics in defending. The full backs are pressing forward a bit too much, almost to the point of recklessness.
The two other goals came from set pieces, a problem we thought we’d solved. Again we need to get back to the basics of marking, picking up late runners and making challenges. All these were missing at corners today. Blackburn are the masters at scoring these goals so had we done our homework?
When Scharner was playing a midfield holding role, people were asking what he did. Perhaps today showed that.
Disappointing but not terminal. Hopefully it’s our Notts Forest game from last season and will serve as a wake up call for some. I thought Mulumbu was excempt from any criticism today. One of the few.

I fully agree with 4 NYBaggie Why how why is Carson captain and retain his position. He must be nailed to that goal line. Look at BBC stats they had 6 efforts 4 on target 2 off and yet they score three goals all high balls in or near the six yard box and the keeper justs jumps up and down on his line. The rest of the defence are also afraid of getting hurt no one went into the challenge and Blackburn got free headers. We are back to light weights who hate getting stuck in. Cox gets in postions but should practise kicking a ball correctly he mis-hits more than he conects and Barnes has come on several times and achived nothing. Get Bednar back for now and let Cox and Miller go out on loan until we get another stricker in. Finally we will not defend well till Ollesen gets back and does some shouting (captain in waiting)

Wigan, Stoke, Blackburn, Villa there are probably others. Familiar theme ? another season of Premier league football and we still cant take a point off any of them. Perhaps they are too streetwise for us or perhaps we arent clever enough to be able to put a team with players on the pitch that can grind out points against this type of team.
Whilst we earn the plaudits at times for our pretty football its all about what happens in both penalty areas. We have a fragile goalkeeper ( thats being kind) and a vulnerable defence, a reasonable midfield and a lightweight forward line. Unless Messrs Peace and Ashworth address this in January we will be in trouble.
To get relegated from the position we find ourselves in today because of a lack of investment would be unforgiveable.

2. Missed both Brunt and Olsson
3. Morrison, Tchoyi and Carson offered very little today
4. Too lightweight up top and lack a plan B when faced by big central defenders – same against Stoke.
5. How often to we look weak at set pieces? If a keeper flaps and doesn’t command his box, then it’s asking for trouble.
6. We’re needlessly putting ourselves under pressure through sloppy play – we’re better than that.

You know what bugs me most? No, not the P.A. for once. The back-passing, dithering and ‘no, you kick it, I don’t want to boot it upfield’ attitude in defence. There are occasions when a heavy clearance buys breathing time, marking opposition time and looking for where everyone is time. We rarely do it, but it has a place in style of play just as much as the slick movements. It makes the crowd nervous, watching slow motion and irresponsible back passes. I lost count of the stupidity today. WHACK the damn thing out of sight when caught out.
Nos.4 and 6 good posts.

Unlike others on here, what i saw was a very good performance undone by what we did (or didn’t do!) in both boxes. I’m not overly worried by our defending today, as bad as it was for the Rovers goals, on the whole this season it’s been very good and until very recently we were the only team in the prem not to have conceded a headed goal – but let in 2 in this game! Look, sometimes teams have an off day, and hopefully this was ours, but i’ll admit it’s bad timing with Man U up next!
It’s whats happening in the other box which is more of a concern…i don’t think theres been any other game this season when we have created (and wasted) so many clear chances! It was the same at Bolton and Villa before that. If we’d taken just half of those created today we would still have won the game despite letting in 3!! Simular story in Bolton & Villa games. Odemwingie appears to be going through one of those barren spells which seems to affect all strikers at one time or another, but from what i’ve seen of him so far, i’m convinced he’ll come good. Can’t realistically see us getting anything out of next game, so we’ll have to grin and bear it when we drop a little closer to bottom 3, but i’ve seen enough this season to know we’ll pull clear mid-jan. Another striker in Jan is required, easy enough to say…but where he gonna come from!

It’s frustrating, but we always seem to have problems playing a certain type of team,e.g. Stoke,Bolton,Blackburn. On paper,we have more natural ball skills, but they have a strong physical presence that’s not pretty to watch, but gets them results. If there’s one positive,to me it seemed a bit complacent for the club to say we only need one new player next month,in the middle of a crucial premiership season, and this might make them rethink that you always have to work at strengthening the squad, whoever you are,and whatever your situation.

5 only the lonely- thanks for the sincere sympathy, and it is comforting to know that however bad it gets,we always have wolves to land on and prop us up.And if we both fall through the trap door, your generosity will continue by allowing us to mark up our usual six points at your expense next season.I’m overwhelmed by the kindness and goodwill shown by all those at the molineux. You should rename yourself ‘the saints’.It’s so touching.

Our defence needs to improve- we are conceding too many goals. One goal should be enough to beat teams like Blackburn at home. Jara hasn’t been the asset I thought he could be in the premier league due to his positioning, marking and irrational tackling (all of which could be addressed by going back to basics, as previously suggested). Steven Reid and boaz myjhil could definitely help the cause – if given the chance they seem to be two characters who could steady the ship at the back). Adding olsson into that set up could work too.
At the other end we create chances, and we are capable of sticking one or two away with a bit of luck (but you can never have enough goalscorers). I still think we are in a decent position going into the second half of the season, but we need to get gritty again and combine our good football with that hard-to-beatability we seemed to have at the beginning of the season. On the plus side, mid-field trio of mulumbu, morisson and dorrans looked good today and won their midfield battle. Surely the latter two players are due some goals in the new year?
imo, when playing against these more physical teams, scharner needs to be playing alongside mulumbu in midfield to shield the defence and scott a bit more, why isnt ibanez playing? or am i missing something?

I woke up early this morning, gotta be carsons fault my pipes froze up the other day, gotta be carsons fault, infact I cut my head open when I was a kid, I think I should be blaming Carson for that aswell.
1st half yesterday we played fantastic 2nd half was poor but I see enough to know that we will still go out and get positive results. This is what football is all about up’s and down’s and I’ve got to say I’m enjoying this season. Keep the faith baggies.
Nobody else is saying it, so let me, Odemwingie is just not good enough. Was he the reason we lost today? No, we have other problems, but if he was St Peter the answer, the missing link, the Premier League goalgetter people were going on about we may well have won! And we would certainly have got something from the Bolton game. No i’m afraid he is just another run of the mill Championship strikers who will score a few goals but will never be a goalscorer (there is a difference) sorry but the search must go on!
Too many of our more recent fans getting carried away. They would be more at home at the Mol with their ‘we’re Albion we should be beating everybody’ attitude.
We are a newly promoted team hoping to end the season still in this division, anything more would be great.
We don’t have a divine right to win games just because it’s ‘only Blackburn’ who have been in this league for ten years and have very good quality players.
We don’t have the money to go out and throw at players (how many were complaining when the prices went up this season?)
We should go out and buy a quality striker. I bet Dan Ashworth hadn’t realised it was this easy.
As for Jara and Carson. They were good enough when we won at Arsenal and Everton and drew at Utd. Or did we get those results with nine players. It didn’t help when certain sections of the crowd started passing on their negative vibes to the players after the first goal. Towards the end a young fan (around twentyish) behind me screamed at Odenwingie, ‘you’re ******* overrated, you ******.’ I suspected he could be Lonely visiting us but he was wearing an Albion shirt.
We’re called supporters because it suggests we support the team. Not just when they are winning.

Anyway thanks for bigging me up, it’s much appreciated. I don’t claim to be an expert but just comment on what I’ve seen (you can do that when you go to matches.) I’ve stuck with the Baggies for 50 years now and I’m very happy here but would be very flattered by any interest from Barca, a big money move would set me up for my retirement (it’s a very short ‘career’ as a football fan) and the Spanish sun would help my arthritic old joints.
It can be hard work, trying to counter all the negativity every time we lose a game and I’ve considered changing tack by going on the Wolves site and only posting petty jibes but I would have to be so small minded to do that it would be very embarrassing wouldn’t it?
PS Which carrier would you suggest? I thought Pickfords.
PPS No offence taken. Good luck tonight, I suppose we’ll both be watching it on TV.

I agree, and i will never look for a single “scapegoat”
but the truth is, we do seem to have gone backwards in our last few games, particularly defending.
What really irked me yesterday, at those two corners.
We bought EVERYONE back, yet conceeded because of an unmarked back post header and a short corner to a player, who could have had a pre cross cup of tea.
To me its ridiculous not to leave at least one on the halfway line, it ocupies two of the opponents defenders, our ploy invited Blackburn to bring everyone forward…..which they did.
I also think we are in trouble.
Three games where we have outplayed the opposition, lost them all, conceeded 7 goals and scored two, is going to take it`s toll on the players belief.

34 Forever.
I certainly wasn’t suggesting everything was great, just that it isn’t as bad as some would suggest.
I don’t think what went on will be lost on the management and although I don’t expect anything on Saturday I fully expect to see a different attitude.
Brunt will make a massive difference, I think we really missed the composure he gives us when we have the ball.
The first goal yesterday was an accident waiting to happen, our fullbacks get forward too quickly, leaving us open to counter-attacking teams like Blackburn and Stoke that have quality wingers (I also thought their striker Kalinic looked very good but then he should do at what he cost.)
The dead ball goals were very poor but they are things that can be put right with work on the training ground. Just a bit of a change of attitude to defending required.
Agree about leaving one upfield at corners, especially as we have the ideal bloke in PO, I’d go even further and say leave two up, leaving our area less cluttered.
I was just trying to say that just like we’re not going to get into Europe when we win two in a row, a couple of bad results doesn’t mean we’ll go down. I do accept that we’re in a scrap though but that’s been the case from day one.
Since when did “supporter” mean becoming uncritical or having blind faith? If you pay to watch a performance of any kind surely part of the process is to consider what works and what doesn’t.
I don’t accept the characterisation of people’s attitude as being: ‘we’re Albion we should be beating everybody’. In my view Blackburn were a team Albion were capable of beating. Yes, we are newly promoted – had a bit of good and bad luck – but all we can go on is how the team performs week in and week out and in recent games there have been certain areas of Albion’s game which have been below par compared to other performances. Some here have given their opinion on why this is – doesn’t make them mindless dingles.

I’ve searched through my posts and can’t find where I said becoming a supporter meant being uncritical or having blind faith.
If we’re being pedantic, I was replying to one of your statements of fact ‘Jara isn’t a PL right back.’ This is your opinion, fair enough but it’s a fairly bald and unconstructive statement. Why in your opinion isn’t he? He was good enough when we were accumulating 22 Points and in the top half of the table. He’s a bit rash I agree but that’s massively different to not good enough.
I agree with most of your other points except Carson flapping. I think this is the general ‘blame him for every goal we concede’ attitude again. I’m not saying he’s blameless but you have to look at the cover he was given.
I think your point that Blackburn is a team we’re capable of beating is spot on. But it’s football and Fulham and Birmingham are teams that Sunderland and United are capable of beating, so why didn’t they? Because on the day it’s 11 against 11 and if you can’t accept that you would be left with a pretty boring game and we might as well all go and watch the Pools Panel or Lawro doing his predictions.
I wasn’t having a go at you or anyone else personally but I thought that
A) Some people at the ground weren’t helping by getting on the players backs to hoof the ball out of defence and
B) The attitude on here is getting similar to the Wolves site IE we should beat teams because we are West Brom.
I wasn’t accusing you of being a Wolves fan. Or mindless either.

Can anyone remember the last time Thomas beat his fullback…got to the byline and put a cross in ? As he’s a right footed player, playing on the left, that wont happen as he always has to cut in to get the ball on his right foot, so giving the defenders more time. Play him on the right why don’t you? Tchoyi looked bushed from the start yesterday, don’t understand why he stayed on ? I’d give Cox a chance instead of Morrison, and as all Baggie fans know, Silent Scott Carson offers the team absolutely nothing, yet he’s Captain ! You could’nt make it up ! Time for RDM to make some big decisions me thinks….

The Real Bully Hoo thanks for your measured response and I’ll try to be as constructive.
I stand by my statement about Jara. I haven’t changed my opinion because the tide has turned; he has always been a “makeshift” right back. You seem to be saying that the fact we gained 22 points means he must be doing an okay job; I don’t share this point of view. I believe his positional play is suspect and he is poor when it comes to last ditch tackles. I didn’t rubbish the guy, I said he wasn’t a PL right back and I feel he is better going forward than defending.
As for Scott Carson, I have defended him more than once from unjust criticism, but the fact remains he is responsible for commanding his box. Nothing to do with “flapping”; it is to do with marshalling the defence and instilling confidence and Scott is weak in this area.

I wish I could do the same with the fans in the Brummie Rd,I have never felt so ashamed to be an Albion fan, nothing to do with the team because I agree with the few on here that up to 1-1 it wasn’t a bad performance, not perfect but not as bad as some of you make out.
I’m talking about the support from the crowd,it was pathetic. At 1-1 we should have been giving the team all the vocal support we could, instead it was a nervous silence,at one point after several attempts to start a song I gave up and gave a rendition of There is Nothing Like A Dame from South Pacific just to take the p–s.
It was like being an Aussie at the Gabba, there was one good rendition of Malumbu but where is the support for other players.
Tchoi has been flavour of the month,OK he had a bad game but don’t get on his back and groan in unison.
You can see it affecting the players, they need support not criticsm and it would be much better to save the energy you put into booing the Ref and the opposition into supporting your own team.

I have to agree with the majority of the posts we are still in a decent position for a promoted club. In my opinion Carson cannot be defended any longer, we have only kept 1 clean sheet this seasdon and it can’t be all down to the back four. he does not command his area and in my opinion it is his poor decision making that is un settling the defence. It would do no harm to give Myhill a game and Jara does seem to have gone off the boil so let reid have a go. I see we are bringing Zuiverloon back from Ispwich, now that is a move too far. Thisn is the worst run of form since RDM took over and he needs to make some big decisions. 52. Well it’s obviuously touched a nerve with you, your reply is nothing short of laughable, you steptoes really need to get over your jealousy and inferior complex oh and happy new year to all except village boy terry.

49 & 51 untrue and dingle- I expected to hear from you lot again now that you’ve actually won a game.Just a question- if the council cleared your debts,Sir Jack poured 60 million into the club,Morgan must have paid the 30 million to bale you out(?),then probably another 30 million to buy players, how come you’re still in the bottom three and below the Baggies, who have generated their own funds without the aid of charitable benefactors? Do you still want to come over here bragging how much money you’ve got? Pitiful and embarrassing.

54 wolves1877- keep coming here saying ‘steptoes’ every 5 minutes actually qualifies for being a village idiot. And as for being jealous, lets see…..you claim to be a ‘bigger’ club than Albion and have more money than us,yet we are higher in the league than wolves, and you’ve only beaten us twice in our last seventeen derby games. So who is really jealous, dumbo?

We may be below you for the time being but that wont last. we will see come may who has the bragging rights.
As for our record against you steptoes, it is poor but that doesnt mean your better than us in anyway.
Look at our history, our ground (which is bieng expanded) our trophies. we are far superior to stepstoes. just get over it.
I also have more interest on Vile than you lot, your like that little dog that annoys you but you dont want to kick it as thats cruel so we feel sorry for you.
Look at current form and see that Wolves are 3rd behind Man u and Man City. Look at your form.
We will catch you
We will stay up
