Baggies ace Gonzalo Jara in the clear over clash
Tuesday 30th November 2010, 11:29AM GMT.
Albion defender Gonzalo Jara will not face any action over his clash with Everton full-back Leighton Baines.
The Baggies man was at the centre of a fiery passage of play at Goodison Park in which he appeared to raise an elbow in an aerial challenge with Baines.
But the incident will not be investigated because referee Lee Mason saw it at the time.
An FA spokesman confirmed the disciplinary committee only examine incidents retrospectively if they are not seen during the game by match officials.
That leaves Jara free from the threat of any suspension despite anger from Everton’s players over the challenge on England full-back Baines, which came seconds before Toffees midfielder Mikel Arteta was sent off for stamping on Jara.
The Chile international has already served a three-match suspension this season following his sending off at Blackpool.
He is likely to figure in tomorrow’s Carling Cup quarter-final at Ipswich despite the prospect of several changes from boss Roberto Di Matteo.
Jara is expected to start as fellow right-back Gianni Zuiverloon has joined Ipswich on loan, although he cannot figure for the Tractor Boys tomorrow as he has already played for the Baggies in earlier rounds.
The only other candidate for the right-back berth, Steven Reid, is likely to deputise for the suspended Youssouf Mulumbu in midfield.

get rid of him hes a liability he will cost us points with his temperament i await the slagging off but you will see as the season goes on i will be proved right

I agree with Jacko.
He should have been sent off for the elbow then he dives two footed into Arteta. Luckily for us Arteta lost his temper and even then Jara cheated by pretending he’d been hurt.
We don’t want this type of player at our club.
I like him. He’s full blooded and gets stuck in. No longer do we have a weak spine and teams can just waltz through us.
RDM needs to calm him down a LITTLE, admittedly, but that is all.
However, Jacko (number 1), you are entitled to your opinion.
Agree Jara needs to calm down if we are to get the best out of him. However, he is good and committed as a player and we need good committed players. We were a little lucky in this passage of play and there could easily have been two reds (one for us and one for Everton). However, we were also unlucky with the red at Blackpool, unlucky with the two penalties against Stoke and unlucky with the second yellow for Mulumbu against Everton. What goes around comes around.

no1 no2 i sniff a dingle , or calm down a bit yes he,s gone over the top and he himself needs to as well ,but if it was dorrans nothing would be said. a bit like mulumbu who is suspended again who will cost us as he one of our best players

Personally I think the only reason it has been such an issue is because they have both happened in such a short space of time. Jara has the latin temperament and its makes up part of his game just like Rooney has had his flashpoints, Beckham did in the past, Zinedine in a WC final etc
Dont get me wrong, I dont want to see him doing in week in, week out and RDM will obviously look to kerb it, but we didnt see it all that much last season so I dont think it will continue to be an issue.
I actually think the Mulumbu issue is more of a worry. 3 red cards already for us and mainly for silly offences. For me, he has been our best player far this season and to keep losing him for matches could prove costly.
I believe that Jara has been a bit of a let down this season purely because he has been played out of position. Last season he played in midfield and was masterful.
I cannot see for the life of why Bob Matthews continues to play him on the right side of defence.

I THINK JARA IS DECENT PLAYER-TYPICAL SOUTH AMERICAN HOT HEADED-BUT HE!S BETTER THAN WE HAVE GOT DOWN THE BAGGIES,GLAD TO SEE DORRANS BACK IN THE TEAM,ROLL ON SUNDAY SHIFNAL BAGGIE.

No 1 & 2, I too sniff a dingle!!! He’s one of our better players and doing great at right back. I hope he can reign himself in a bit and keep calm, as RDM will no doubt be speaking to him about. However, we are not push overs anymore as can be testified by the spirit of players like Mulumbu, Ollsen, Tamas as well as Jara.

No 1 Jacko.
I cerainly won’t be slagging you off. I’m in awe of anyone with the power to see into the future. And I’m not going to have a go at your little friend Jonno either.
I agree with others on here, especially 1879. He’s a top player and these couple of abberations won’t have been lost on RDM. I’m sure a few words will be whispered in his ear. I hope he isn’t reined in too much though as you need a few hard cases. The look on Lee Bowyers face against Blues was worth the entrance fee alone. We are no longer the TM team that used to get bullied out of games, Jara, Tamas, Olsson, Scharner can all look after themselves.

I posted before the weekend about what a good bloke and excellent professional Pablo seems to be. I’ve just read the piece about his reaction to being left out. What a breath of fresh air in modern day football. A modest gentleman.

Whe jara jumped against Baines his arm was up – but you do that to get leverage.
He did not hit baines with his elbow as has been suggested but with his head – and thats why he wasn’t booked or sent off – it was deemed to be an incidental head clash.
If he had led with the arm and connected with it he would be serving a three match ban.
I agree he needs to calm down but to suggest he is a dirty player is laughable.

Everybody loves a paul robinson or to Kevin Muskert (sorry but he was a prime example).
I personally didnt like robbo for his positioning, badge kissing etc but his committment in the challenge and desire to win were never doubted. Same applies to Jara.
Plus he didn’t get sent off anyway. I nearly had 3 numbers on the lottery, but i had 2.

You have summed it up perfectly. Without a few hardmen in this league you will get nowhere. Jara does lose his temper and will probably get the occasional ban but he is a deterrent to opponents who might take a few liberties , plus the fact he is a very good player. The one player you have not mentioned from our ” hard school ” is Somen Tchoyi. I think you would need David Hay to have a go at him.
Finally I see that the FA are not going to take any action against Jara for the Goodison incident. I wonder if they will be taking any action against Aussie thug Cahill for the diabolical foul he committed in the same game.

Good point. We always tend to think of hardman defenders or the occasional battering ram centre forward but I’ve seen Tchoyi get clattered continually on the wing and give as good as he gets. I really can’t see anyone intimidating him.

can i just say in defence of jara those who watched the blackpool game we were robbed by the refereeing decsions that cost us that night jara only got sent off for 2 reasons, ibanez sending off which never was,and luke varney was sniping at jara until jara lost is head and got sent off, i admitt he shud calm down but i think he is a quality player, amazing now luke moore isnt here albion fans have no 1 2 slag off, support the club through thick and thin

15.Robin. Quite right about Cahill. That would be the one on Scharner I think. This ‘elbow across the nose’ foul is dangerous and needs stopping. NOW! Happy is also quite right about Jara’s head against Baines. The channel I watched showed it three times, but emphasised his body to body clash as being heavy but fair. He was lucky with his two-footed tackle though. Had he made contact, he would have walked.
I’d love to hear Pablo’s opinion on the English weather. Or his family’s reaction. We frequently had snow before Christmas and after when I was a child, but this is really unusual. It will be ‘eyes only’ showing on Sunday.

Jara is a very decent full bacvk with a bit of aggresion about him, yes he will get into the odd scrape but RDM will sort that out, he deserves his place with the top West Midlands team.

I have been supporting the Albion for over 57 years & I can assure you that Jara is not a dirty player. However, in todays game he does need to show more restraint. As rgards his best position it is debatable whether it in front of the back four or as a back.
However, the game against Everton proved to me that Paul Sharner’s best position is not in midfield as he no longer mobile enough. i.e. he is too slow!
To even consider loaning out Graham Dorrans is ridiculous! Even though he is not back to his best form he has already made a tremendous difference in the games against B’ham, Fulham & Everton. Games which we may not have won without him. The team should be built around him! He is inspirational!

Jara is world class, an absolute steal congratulations to our scouting network yet again. Just think we could have signed that Jelly bloke who has returned to Belgium because he is homesick!!!!!!!!!
15 Robin- Interesting point.I seem to remember Cahill kicking Jara in the back of the legs as he ran away with the ball.If the F.A. had taken action against Jara,Albion could have used video evidence to have Cahill banned as well.As for the original incident, the Ref. saw what happened,or rather didn’t happen,so there obviously wasn’t anything wrong or intentional about the challenge.A quiet word from RDM to Jara about keeping cool, then everyone moves on.

Concerning the Everton game,I want to give special praise to Paul Scharner. Not only did he score for Albion, but according to monday’s edition of the Sun newscomic,he was one of the ‘team of the week’-apparently playing for Wigan. Can you believe he turned in a blinder for both clubs at the same time? What a guy!

23 CR78.
I hate to correct you BUT…
Paul Scharner only played for one team on Saturday.
That team was.
Villa/Blues/Blackburn/Blackpool/Bolton/Stoke/WBA/Wigan/Wolves United.
In other words in the media’s eyes he plays for one of that group of clubs that don’t really matter and therefore they can’t really be bothered with as they’re a bit of a nuisance. Especially when they have the nerve to go and beat one of the ‘big’ clubs. Then of course it’s all about the ‘big’ club having an off day.
Typical was Talksport’s report on our game this morning, discussion between two presenters and a tabloid journalist. Guess what, they never actually mentioned us, or Ipswich for that matter. The entire conversation was about Roy Keane who registers on their radar because he used to play for a ‘big’ club and is therefore interesting.

Over on the dark side there are 153 posts on the two articles about Van Damme leaving. Not one from Laughing Wolf though. Yet when they signed him he was all over this site telling us what a great player he was and they’d snatched him from under our noses as he’d chosen them over us.
Funny that.
Feel free to share your views with us on the subject Shadrag. In the meantime we’ll just have to struggle along with Shorey and Cech at left back.

Gareth Crookes team of the week on the Beeb web site has Carson, Scharner and Brunt all selected.
On Jara, I think that he reminds me of John Kaye or even Dougie Frasier and Olsson reminds me of John Wile. But Carson reminds me of our bionic goalie, the wonderful John Osbourne. I just can’t decide which of our midfielders reminds me more of Willie Johnson.

Definitely Dougie Fraser or on the other side Ray Wilson who started as a skillful left wing but was converted to a tough tackling, overlapping full back and definitely had a hard streak.
Olsson, Wile?
Yes in that they both had the same fearless attitude but differences. Wile was a tougher tackler although I suppose he wasn’t shackled by modern day pansy refereeing. Distribution Jonas wins hands down, a mate of mine used to call John Wile Beckenwile.

I’d take the Garth Crooks team of the week with a pinch of salt, when we drew at home to Bolton, Morrison had (IMO) his worst game of the season, he was off the pace all day but scored our equaliser and guess what….??? Garth Crooks team of the week….our only player when there were 10 others who were better that day!!
Scharner and Brunt score at the weekend and make Garth Crooks team of the week. In fairness both played well, but I don’t think dear Garth bothers to watch anything more than the MOTD highlights before picking his teams.

On another point,
Has anybody seen the payments to agents figures from each club??
£67.1m the total from all of the Premiership clubs over the last year (including the last transfer window) yet the Albion only spent £614k, less than 1% of that. Only Blackpool spent less and we spent less than half of Wolves who were the next up on the list. West Ham and Bolton still managed to part with £3.5m each. We even spent less than some teams in the Championship.
Undoubtedly some will see that as being tight, but in a day and age of greed and agents dictating clubs’ transfer policies, it’s refreshing to see we can assemble such a talented squad without buying into that like some of the other teams. Well done JP, Mark Jenkins and DA, and well done Albion.

Lonely has told me that he’s actually ‘come over’ but he doesn’t want it broadcast in case they send over agents to take him out. We’ve changed his car from the distinctive Skoda 911 with machine guns and ejector seat He’s currently in a safe house and we are working on a new identity for him but have not come up with one yet.
Any ideas anyone?

I know what you mean about Wile, but it was his determination that I was really on about. Remember when he played with a gashed forehead. Both players hate to lose and it was that reason that Olsson reminds me of Wile. I feel priviledged to have seen the team of the seventies, I suspect that Cyril will have the same view about eariler teams, and I feel sorry for the younger fans who have missed the characters of the past. Two stand out. Osbourne getting a fag from a fan when all the action was at the other end and Willie going past the same defender twice in the same run just to rub his face in it.
Oh what days they were.

I know, but I look at his team so rarely that I was surprised he even knew that we existed.

I wasn’t knocking Wile, I was a massive fan.
I remember Willie doing loads of daft things. Sticking the ball up his shirt and going on a mazy run. Taking a throw in off the back of an opposition player and being pulled up for ungentlemanly conduct. Many times beating a defender and then going back to beat him again.
A real character and one of my favouite players, he stood out like a shining light in what was a fairly poor team in his early years at the club. For all his capers I also remember John Robertson who was setting the world alight at the time at Forest saying that he was jealous of Willie’s ability to cross accurately at real pace. Praise indeed from a man who crossed the ball as well as Beckham.
I seem to remember the Middlesboro’ right back, I think it might have been John Craggs but not sure. He was one player that seemed to have Willie in his pocket whenever we played them even though he wasn’t a great full back.
