Paul Scharner salutes Albion’s fight

Monday 29th November 2010, 11:45AM GMT.

Goal hero Paul Scharner has saluted Albion’s resilience after helping them return to winning ways at Everton.

But the Austria international claimed the Baggies must roll with the Premier League punches, as he predicted more difficult runs like the one they ended with Saturday’s win.

Scharner headed his first goal for the club to open the scoring in the 4-1 success on Merseyside, to end a five-game winless run that followed a seven-match unbeaten sequence.

He said: “We knew we had a decent start and the expectation increases when you go six games without defeat.

“But it’s normal when you join the Premier League that you will have a negative run as well.

“I am happy that we stopped that with a decent win at Everton and that makes it count even more.

“It is very important and I think we are back in the right direction now.

“It is a massive win and I think we deserved and if you look at the goals.

“It was a nice free-kick from Chris Brunt, a nice goal from Somen Tchoyi and also a nice one from Youssouf Mulumbu.

“It was really deserved and a really important win because after the last few weeks it was quite hard.”

Scharner’s maiden goal in Baggies colours continued his remarkable sequence against Everton, who have been on the receiving end of five of the Austrian’s 15 career goals.

He joked: “Maybe I will get a stand named after Paul Scharner. I am very happy that I opened my goalscoring account because it took a while.

“But I think if it helps the team that is the most important thing.

“It means a lot because I came here to help the team reach their targets and also to score some goals.

“After 11 or 12 games I am happy that I scored.”

Saturday’s game also marked a positional switch for Scharner, who joined the Baggies to prove himself in midfield but was moved to centre-back at Goodison Park.

He said: “Roberto Di Matteo, the gaffer, asked me if I could play in the centre-back position because he felt I could get a bit more relaxed in the game.

“And it worked actually.”
