Everton 1 Albion 4

Three stunning goals helped Albion to their first win in six matches against a shell-shocked Everton.

Both teams ended the match with 10 men, but Albion were deserving winners as they battled their way to all three points.

A header from Paul Scharner and a free-kick thunderbolt from Chris Brunt gave the Baggies a 2-0 lead, before Tim Cahill headed the Toffees back into the game before half-time.

But a brilliant strike from Somen Tchoyi made it 3-1 to Albion, before Everton’s Mikel Arteta was sent off for a stamp on Gonzalo Jara.

Youssouf Mulumbu then exchanged passes superbly with James Morrison to make it 4-1 via the help of a deflection.

But the Congo international was booked for celebrating with the Baggies fans and he saw a second yellow card, followed by a
red, for a late foul on Jermaine Beckford.

The first-half was an even contest territorially, but it was the Baggies who packed the greater punch and took their chances.

They led on 16 minutes when Jerome Thomas forced Phil Jagielka to concede a corner and Scharner rose unmarked to head home Brunt’s flag kick.

And it was 2-0 some 10 minutes later, after Tim Cahill conceded a free-kick for a foul on Youssouf Mulumbu 25 yards out.

Brunt stepped up to curl a fantastic left-footed free-kick into the extreme top corner of Tim Howard’s goal.

But the Baggies were grateful to captain and goalkeeper Scott Carson for fine saves to deny Victor Anichebe and Arteta.

However, the Toffees altered the mood of the stadium three minutes before half-time, when Gabriel Tamas conceded a needless corner and was then outjumped by Cahill, as the Australian headed home Leighton Baines’ flag-kick.

A clever break by Albion shortly after the interval gave Peter Odemwingie a shooting chance but he blasted over.

Tamas was on hand to make a vital goalline clearance, after Carson had parried a shot from substitute Jermaine Beckford.

The Baggies cause was aided just before the hour-mark with the dismissal of Arteta.

Jara had got away with catching Leighton Baines with a stray forearm, but referee Lee Mason was on the spot to see the Spaniard stamp down down on the Chilean and the official took his time before brandishing a red card.

Everton continued to boss the game and Carson made another fine block with his legs to deny Beckford, before the striker blasted high and wide from another chance that came from a Tony Hibbert cross.

But the points were sealed for the Baggies with an impressive breakaway goal.

Substitute Steven Reid found Tchoyi with a raking crossfield pass and the Cameroon winger cut inside both Hibbert and Cahill before looping a powerful shot over Howard.

Beckford’s misery continued moments later when he found space in the box but sent an overhead kick wide.

Mulumbu then added to insult to injury before his red card to round off a memorable day for Albion.

The goals are flowing again from all over the pitch from different players. Brunts free-kick was a corker. Sorry, Wall Heath, I made Scot Carson our Captain, man of the match, he was outstanding in my opinion. We all like to have our say on team selection, I’m always banging on about Tchoyi, But where did Roberto get the Scharner move from. Shows we have to acknowledge his superior nous.
One down side, Mulumbu can’t receive a cheap yellow for taking off his shirt. The nature of his job doesn’t allow for it. Like today another yellow issued for a mistimed tackle and it becomes a red. Now it’s bye-bye for how long?.
Don’t want to end on a sour note so: Glad to see you back Dorrans.

hope he stays in for the rest of he season).
Brave team selection RDM and nice to see Tchoyi get on to show what he can do. Bit mystified why Shorey is not playing though as he is a class act. Bad news with Mulumbu missing the next 2 matches – time for Reid to step in.

I think we’ll get relegated easily this season.

The game against Man Utd could easily have been 4 – 0 but somehow it went 2 – 2. There have been lots of games where the win could easily have been a loss. I’m not sure of any performances where we’ve been totally convincing.

We lack the creativity and resilience. Whereas other teams around us can be more confident of carving out a result (Blues, Blackpool, Wigan, Blackburn, even Wolves) we look utterly fragile and capable of going from winners to losers in seconds.

Oh well. It was fun whilst in lasted.

Rebecca, not so sure as you are that our impending relegation is a forgone conclusion.

Interesting post from ShropshireBaggie/ Rebecca. I’m not prepared to say if Albion will stay up or go down, there’s too many games left to play, but I see no sense thinking about “what might’ve been if…”. He could have and maybe deserved a red card for his stupid challenge 2nd half yesterday. He screwed up at Blackpool when we could have won with 10 men and could so nearly have messed us up yesterday. Great game, especially if you’re a neutral – bit of a nail biter for a Baggie despite the scoreline.

Three fantastic goals and one excellently executed and yet it could have been different were it not for the combination of Carson’s excellence and Beckford’s profligacy. Churlish to nit-pick after a 4-1 away win but I can’t imagine Andy Carroll being so wasteful next week given the same opportunities.

    A few thoughts on individuals:

Carson – great game and although he is obviously to blame for the onset of the wintry weather, my MotM.

Jara – treading a very fine line between the thuggish and the combative, needs to be careful.

Mulumbu – usual mix of the industrious, enthusiastic, effective and daftness at the end, though the second yellow was harsh.

Cech – thought he was quietly effective.

Scharner / Tamas – why? was my first thought and probably still is. Kind of worked out ok but with a feeling that we got away with it a bit.

Brunt – welcome return, brilliant goal.

Dorrans – just gives you a confidence from his presence, effectve without excelling to the extent we know he can.

    Odemwingie – lively

Tchoyi – real livewire, top drawer goal.

A great, much needed win with the bottom two winning – well done to Wolves.

Moyes was understandably miffed in his interview but I thought a touch ungracious.

RDM – I wondered why he was having a quiet word with Cahill on the pitch at the end but having now seen Cahill’s nasty retaliation on Jara, I hope it was to say “I clocked that son, see you at the return fixture.”

    Great result.

    5 Jack.
Agree about the first booking, like when players get booked for taking there shirt off in celebration, it is understandable but unnecessary and the management need to clamp down on these silly bookings. Having said that the second booking was a joke. None of the Everton players even appealed and actually looked shocked that a free kick was given. It had all the hallmarks of a referee trying to appease a hostile home crowd. Unfortunately we have to pay the price.

Jara was also lucky to get away with the challenge at the corner of the box and another referee could have interpreted his tackle on Arteta differently and sent them both off. He’s still quite inexperienced at this level but I’m sure RDM and Eddie will be having a word.

Funny that after a great result we’re talking about referees but they seem to be universally ‘dodgy.’ The first Man Ure goal yesterday followed a sliding studs up tackle by Anderson. Not dangerous and not a foul but had it been the other way I feel sure one would have been given. The same player then slides in and catches the Blackburn keeper, definite foul. The ref waves play on as Robonson limps back to his goal and Utd score. A real Old Trafford decision from a weak official.

This game was all Everton for about ten minutes and Carson kept us in it with great saves whilst we ‘found our feet’ with a different team. Those who slag off Chris Brunt, and one guy who rang WM on Friday, or was it Thursday, wanted him out as ‘rubbish’, should ask how good was Beckham? If Beckham had put in that corner for Scharner, then followed it with THAT free kick goal, everyone in the world would be after his autograph. Scharner and Cech have both had detractors, yet yesterday they were excellent, steadying those around until we got a grip of the game. Dorrans was about 10 minutes away from the player we knew last year. Jara and Mulumbu both need a kick up the bum to remind them we cannot afford to be without them through silliness. St.Peter, Morrison and the others ran themselves silly to stay ahead of this game. Tchoyi was just what was needed and at the right time to come on. Thomas had softened up their fullbacks, Someni just exploded amongst what was left of their confidence. What a superb goal. I still think we shall finish 10th in May.

    Wall Heath

I don’t think you can throw a claim in that most supporters of other clubs think Scott Carson’s terrible to support your argument. That can’t be true because I somehow doubt you know most supporters of other clubs.

Even if some do, do you think their expert evaluation comes from watching 40 Albion games a season or from the 2 England internationals they’ve seen him play in?

I’m still yet to hear anybody’s reasonable suggestion for a better replacement. It’s as though people think we can sell him (a 25-year-old England international) and replace him with Petr Cech. Would you all prefer Rob Green?

I think I made a point last week. Van Der Saar, Hart (yes, golden boy himself), Fabianski, Almunia, Reina, Green and Howard have all dropped high-profile clangers than Carson this season. The perfect keeper just doesn’t exist.

It took the shine off Saturday for me, clapping the players and walking out at the end and people still slating Carson. As usual people choosing to ignore the 2 world-class saves he pulled off and concentrating on a botched kick in the first half. Whilst RDM picks him, I don’t know why people can’t just get behind the lad.

One thing that has not been mentioned yet on this thread.
Jara`s histrionics when he realised the refferee was about to take action against Arteta, the feigning of injury.

Normally I get wound up and start arguing when people are just being unfair, but I’m losing the will.

This is the best it’s been for 30-odd years and people still do nothing but complain. I honestly think people expect some of Carson’s saves as a minimum. I don’t expect every (or even most) supporters to agree with me, but that doesn’t mean you can’t and don’t get frustrated by what you’d deem unfair criticism. I, like you, am just expressing my opinion. I grew up proud of what great supporters we had, yet some days recently there seems so much dissatisfaction and apathy.

I don’t really see what Carson would have to do to warrant a more complimentary observartion on his performance than “He did alright”. He kept us in the game on about 3 or 4 occasions on Saturday. He got away with a poor kick in the first half and other than that was faultless. What more can he possibly do??

If you don’t rate him, fine, at least be fair to the bloke. It strikes me that it’s almost become fashionable to slate Carson. Last week he was somehow to blame for us not scoring against Stoke, there were people having a go at him on here when we were outplayed by Man City.

I note you again stopped short of naming a realistic, suitable replacement for him.

Also, are you now trying to claim we don’t play nice football???! Ask some of those friends of yours who support other clubs, see what they think. I know exactly what you mean. On here I’ve often felt like giving up. You get someone making an unfounded criticism with no facts to back it up. You go to the trouble of answering, making your points. You get no reply and two days later the same poster is on making the same ubsubstantiated claim.

It’s the same at the ground. Someone shouts ‘Come on Peace, get your hand in your pocket for a change’ (that’s the censored version.) You explain the finances and what the money’s been spent on. You get a pitying look as if you haven’t picked up on the cogent points of their well thought out argument.

The reason other club’s fans don’t rate Carson is because they are media influenced sheep and rarely get to see him (what’s the chance of a good Carson save being shown on MOTD?) Their entire opinion is based on one game for England in terrible conditions for a keeper. It was a mistake but not as bad as Rob Green’s in the recent WC which seems to have been forgotten about.

I recently mentioned Ian Holloway’s quote about Scott Carson after the Blackpool game. I’d rather base my opinion on somene like Olly than a few uninformed opposition supporters.

PS Kev. I got your Pollyanna point, probably an age thing. And on the subject of other fans thinking we play good football. I was on holiday when we beat Arsenal and listened on Talksport. After the game a number of Arsenal fans were interviewed and almost universally said we played good football and deserved the win. Not a bad compliment from fans of the best footballing team in the country.

Glad to see you have a sense of humour,we were beginning to worry for your sanity,a few more post like that and you’ll have to resign as chairman of The Grey People of the UK Party.
You may think your opinions are right but try to consider that you may be wrong more often because your definitely wrong about me having a bob or two, but you can spell.
Get yourself a copy of Hayley Mills in the film Polly Anna I watch it twice a week.
Told you Warren didn’t need my help.

Myhill was dropped from Hull’s first team at the end of last season for a series of blunders, that would render him calamitous to those who think a keeper should never make an error.

Westwood would seem a good prospect but is still at Coventry and is Ireland’s number 3 goalkeeper- behind Joe Murphy, so is he really that good?

P.S. I did like your implication that Polly Anna was an adult film. Suffice to say that if it is, and Kev watches it regularly, it might help explain why Kev has such a Polly Anna outlook on life.

What a ridiculous post defending Peace. Peace should’ve sacked himself and replaced himself with a multi-billionaire when he failed to fork out £50k a week for Jimmy Bullard and James Beattie. Think where we would be now…..

You don’t have to be real blood relatives to be brothers, in fact we’ve never met. Glad to see you getting a few sarcastic digs in retalation. What will probably really upset you is that I’ve actually agreed with you on something on Jarrod’s Blog.

Had we done that and appointed Alan Irvine or Darren Ferguson as manager we would probably be heading the league now instead of struggling in mid-table.

By all means mention Carson whenever you see fit, but it is an opinions forum and as you said to me, not everybody will always agree with you!!

If you feel you’ve been rounded up on, imagine how Carson feels when he’s blamed every time we don’t win…….

Re: TRBH, he’s a very eloquent poster IMO so I’m flattered you’ve speculated on such a link, although he’s been watching the Albion and knows a lot more than I. I’d prefer to think I was a Robin to Batman (or Bully Man as you’ve previously referred to him), you probably see us more as Penfold and Danger Mouse.

62, before you start getting stressed maybe you should think about writing on you own forum ai? ;). All these wolves fans who write on here make me laugh.

Back to the important I think the Everton game was a confidence booster that should hopefully put on a good run for the Christmas period,

Cech- Agreed had a great game.

Brunt- Well… that free kick speaks for itself but he has shown pedigree in this league and has proved he is a fantastic player for the team.

Dorrans- Slow start to the season but is getting a lot! better, only takes his presence to spur the team on.

Mulumbu- Soft second yellow but first deserving of one as you can’t do that and get away it in this league(although can you really blame him for showing excitement for scoring in our first win in a few games???).

RDM- His tactic’s if i’m honest at times confuse me sharner at the back but it worked. I have no dought that he will get us to where we deserve to be without sounding too biased here i do think we have have the best albion team this season than we have had since i first started watching the albion 13 years ago.

I for one am looking forward to happy Christmas

You’ve really stuck your neck on the line there, suggesting that this team is better than the great 1997-98 side. I don’t think Crichton, Van Blerk, Carbon, Smith, McDermott, Butler, Gilbert, Flynn, Hamilton, Quinn or Micky Evans would be happy with that!! ;-)

A bit unfair on European. You deliberately picked that team from the last 13 years. The one that overhauled the Wolves lead couldn’t hold a candle to the present team on skill. But on bottle and desire I’d back them against anybody. They will always be heroes to me for giving me the best day and the best few weeks of my fooyball life.

I deliberately picked that mischievously from the wording in European’s post, I know he only meant well (as did I) and I completely agree with his general point.

I started watching in 1986 and it’s the best side I’ve seen (although I agree that for pure emotional stimulation, that 01/02 promotion is unlikely to ever be surpassed). From your posts it sounds like you’ve seen a fair bit more than both of us, how does this side and the emotions of the Megson era compare to those of the late 70′s and earlier?

    I know you were joking.
In answer, it’s very hard to compare. The late 60′s team couldn’t compete on skill but so many things were different then not least the ball, the pitches and the way the referees interpret the rules. But the team of Astle and Brown were very exciting not only because we had such great attacking options but our defenders liked attacking more than defending.

The early 80′s side that BFR ruined were undoubtedly the most talented set of players in my memory although Cyril and some other older bloggers may want to put forward the claims of the 50′s vintage as they actually won things.

The main difference of course is one close to both our hearts. In all of those decades we achieved what we did on a fairly level playing field. The present day squad has been assembled on a shoestring compared to the people we’re competing with.

Jarrod could do a blog on this during a quiet week. It would certainly provoke a good debate.

    Euro, Warren and TRBH

I started following our beloved team in the late sixties / early seventies. It is our family team, my brother is a season ticket holder. I tend to agree with TRBH as the old first division was much more even. The teams that were in the old div 1 included Bristol City, Norwich, Leeds, Leicester, Coventry, QPR, both Nottinghams, Derby and Ipswich as well as most of the big names still in the premier. You used to come home from a match in a happy mood which was mostly independant to whether you had won or lost because you had been to a thrilling and entertaining football match. Most teams played enjoyable football and there were very few who played to win at all costs. If you had a scottish, welsh or irish player then you had internationals playing for you.
    Oh what days they were.

Taking about a tear in my eye,I can remember my dad taking me to Wembley in the late 50/60′s against Scotland, song sheets and all.
As for the best team at the Albion, early memories of the stress free pre teenage yrs,the smell of liniment ’cause we stood next to the wall,Chippy Clark running down the wing I can’t remember if it was then but 2 shilling in, are still fresh and were a tremendous bond forming experience.
As for the best teams for me,they have to be those under Atkinson and Giles great times!

I think it was half a crown for adults and one and three for kids when I started going. Can’t be sure as my Dad used to pay.

I remember the smell of linament as I used to sit on the wall on the Halfords Lane side of the Smethwick. Graham Williams would go thumping into slide tackles and the thing that surprised me was the sound of the tackle compared to when we did it at school.

I always wished I was on the other side to watch Chippy when we attacked but my Dad couldn’t be bothered to walk that far. Consequently I had to make do with Alec Jackson and Kenny Foggo.

I often think the kids today miss out on that scramble for places mixed with the sense of cameraderie on the wall.
