Boss Roberto Di Matteo has ordered Albion to keep on fighting to change their luck in the Premier League.

The head coach believes poor fortune has played a part in his team’s run of just one point from their last five matches.

But Di Matteo is certain their fighting spirit will help them turn the football gods back in their favour.

He said: “I don’t think we’ve been rewarded for what we’ve produced in the last few weeks. The performance levels have been good, but sometimes you need decisions to go for you.

“At West Ham we had a three-versus-two situation and one of our players made the wrong decision and you need to get those things right. We’ve had suspensions and injuries – Chris Brunt and Jonas Olsson are big players for us.

“Liverpool miss Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard and aren’t the same team and it’s the same with Frank Lampard, John Terry and Didier Drogba at Chelsea.

“But we will keep fighting.”

The Baggies have so far kept just one clean sheet in league action this season and Di Matteo admitted a second is now overdue, although he is refusing to become pre-occupied with the statistic.

He said: “My philosophy is if we score at least one more than the opposition then it’s not bad. But, ideally, we don’t want to concede at all. It gives you a better chance.

“In the last five games we’ve had four penalties against us and that always makes things difficult.

“Manchester City were better and there was little we could do, although we hit the bar and post, but in other games we have been OK. I want my team to keep fighting and there is hope for us if we keep going.

“We want to turn it around as soon as possible but, looking at the big picture, we have 16 points now and 35 was enough to stay up last time.”

The Baggies will continue their campaign at Everton on Saturday and Di Matteo is full of praise for Toffees boss David Moyes and leading scorer Tim Cahill.

He said: “A lot of people admire Moyes. He’s done a great job, it’s great they’re showing long-term commitment and using patience to get results.

“They’ve got some great players too. Cahill is a clever player.”
