Albion 0 Stoke 3
Saturday 20th November 2010, 5:09PM GMT.
Albion’s hoodoo against Stoke continues and the Baggies will wonder how they ended up the losers.
Contentious penalties in the second-half, coverted by Matthew Etherington and substitute Jonathan Walters, had Roberto Di Matteo’s side chasing the game, with Walters’ second in stoppage time harsh on the home side.
The first 45 minutes offered little in the way of goalmouth action but, as would become the trend in the game, it was Albion who held the greater territorial advantage.
However, it was Stoke who made the breakthrough on 55 minutes when referee Chris Foy pointed to the spot, after striker Kenwyne Jones went down under a challenge from goalkeeper Scott Carson – some might say a little too easily.
Up stepped Etherington to drill the penalty to Carson’s left, after he had guessed the right way.
Albion continued to press in search of an equaliser and enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession, but Somen Tchoyi missed their best chance on 75 minutes.
The substitute flung himself at Jerome Thomas’ cross and got his header on goal, but goalkeeper Asmir Begovic did well to tip the ball over the bar.
And the Baggies were made to pay when Stoke killed the game with a second 10 minutes later, again from the penalty spot.
The second call was even more contentious than the first, substitute Simon Cox was shoulder-to-shoulder with Dean Whitehead, who tumbled over.
This time Walters, on for Etherington, took the spot kick and sent Carson the wrong way.
Insult was added to injury in stoppage time with Walters’ second.
The Stoke substitute broke through on goal and, although Carson managed to stop the first effort, he could do little about the rebound.
Stoke’s victory made it just one win in 26 for Albion against the Potters.

Amazingly, I actually liked this ref who recognised that players are allowed to tackle and didn’t show a yellow card. From where I was sitting the two penalties looked just that – if there is cause for annoyance it is for our players giving them away. Silly.
Disappointing and undeserved result which hid a good performance by many of the team.
The worrying aspect is the isolation of Jerome Thomas…often on runs there was no support for him meaning he had to turn back rather than pass forward. Also Odemwingie was given few options by those around him.
…but we live to fight another day.
PS Molumbu sublime in midfield again.

We never looked like scoring.
Very poor refereeing
Linesman behind the play and missed the offside in the build up play to the penalty. Sorry. Cheating dive by Jones!!
Stoke usual timewasting and unpunished on key fouls.
When will the FA take action against these clueless Championship referees???
Di Mateo needs to give Thomas and Sharner compassionate leave and get Cox alongside Odemwingie and Tchoyi given a run.
The team needs to play regularly as an attacking force. Stuff this mainly defensive style.
What has Storey done to lose his place??

jesse a good summary of the game i think , i was sat in brummie so not a good view of pens so need to watch on tv to make an opinion .i think rdm needs to change tatics at home now and play with 2 forwards up front as we are finding goals hard to come by and were getting found out. keep faith lads still not a bad start 2 to 3 wins before xmas and we will all be happy

I was in smethwick and can safely say. . neither was a penalty!!
Immeaidate reaction to the first one was ‘penalty’ but after thinking about it again and hearing others who had seen replays, it sounds as though Jones dived. Second one was a joke giving the reputation Stoke have for being a ‘big’ team. Little more than a shoulder to shoulder with Cox (one of the smallest players on the pitch)Whitehead flung himself and did neither of you see Scharner get shoved into the advertising boards??
Anyone else think its coincidence that just after Pulis has a rant, they get three very dodgy decisions?
Can’t fault the players for anything. Played well, better team and just very unlucky we came up against our bogey team with a poor referee

Roberto out? No, but he does need a different perspective – a number of key players are off the pace and not giving 100%.
Leaving aside Foy and Stoke for a moment, I thought Albion were slow in first half, many very poor decisions were made and we lacked ideas in front of a well drilled defence. Sorry, neither Scharner nor Barnes impress me. Need changes for Everton to stop the rot.
I couldn’t see Carson’s hands, but Jones went down too easily. The 2nd penalty was a farce as was most of Foy’s and Stoke’s performances.
Bogey team? Snot would be a better description IMO.

Just when you think you’ve seen the worst ref…along comes another.
1. Fooled by Jones’ obvious dive (are refs completely incapable of seeing some of these theatrics that EVERYONE else can see?)
2. Goodness knows what he was thinking of by interrepting the 2nd penalty…words fail me! (is it just an unfortunate coincidence these decisions come after Pulis’ outburst about Stoke not getting decisions)
3. with Odemwingie goalside of the Stoke fullback and racing clear the fullback is hanging on his shirt and the linesman is flagging frantically, foul correctly given, but did Mr Foy forget his cards? If this type of foul is not a nailed on booking, then what is? and why would (do) one of our players get booked for this week in week out?
Sorry No.1, but this ref had a stinker, this game was a nailed on 0-0, til Chris Foy stepped in once he realised he hadn’t got it on his coupon!

The result flatters Stoke. Penalties, they would’t have been given against junior teams. Mulumbu magnifico again. We’ll be back.

Well, I feel gutted and mugged, not to have gotten anything from that, by far the majority of the play, and more creative team on the pitch, but no one seemed to want to take a chance and shoot.
I was in BRE so cant say whether penalties were justified or not, BUT, if they were any thing like some of the other decisions given…., totally baffling???
Im talking about Stoke players going down every time we got a break on, just to stop play, Derlap taking forever just to take a throw in, and never being penalised for it, and any 50/50 always going the other way.
Only solis I can take from today was Tcyhoi, with his first touch he set up a goal scoring position, and every time he got the ball you believed something was on. Only one question, what does he have to do to get a start??????

Was gonna write an essay but looked at the DINGLES site before and don’t feel half as bad now.hehe
Last night my daughter told me who the ref was and immediately thought I wish we had a more accomplished official for this one.
Yes it’s amazing Pulis cry’s shame and all of a sudden they get everything going.
Copying Wenger?
Two penalties in a game, although in the Brummie, need to see them on tv.
Thought Carson got something on the first one,the second by Cox, when have they changed the ruling on shoulder to shoulder?
Nice to see Jara back think we’ve missed him.
Don’t think we’re gonna see us with two up front and why should we, we’re not used to it now.How many teams play that system?
Just need to kickstart again and play through it,
Seems that since the Blackpool debacle the officials are wary of us.HEADS UP LADS.

Have been optimistic over the last few games, but having seen the table, the three teams who have a game on us could leave us 4th from bottom if they pick points up. the partys over folks let get sorted NOW or face the same dilema as our near rivals.

Easy to get depressed but it’s not the end of the world. It was never a 3-0 game. As Walsall Baggie says, Pulis’ propaganda offensive about refereeeing decisions worked a treat, I’m sure he won’t be relegating Mr Foy. All I can say about Mr Foy is that he is marginally better than Mr Oliver.
From the BRE it was impossible to decide on the penalties. Having just watched them on MOTD, it’s obvious Carson made no contact with Jones and the other was very dubious as well. Well done Pulis you worked hard for those two.
We didn’t play that bad. Missed Brunt’s prompting and I never thought I’d say this but missed his industry as well. I don’t think Tamas or Pablo had a bad game but we miss the balance Olsson’s left foot gives us (heard today that he may not be back before Christmas.) I think if there was any doubt before then it’s clear now that Shorey is our best left back. Tchoyi must be given more game time, he terrorised their defence when he came on.
We will play worse than that and win. The other thing is that everyone is writing us off but we’re three points behind Stoke. This bad run can be traced back to that one idiotic decision at Blackpool. I don’t want to go on about it as we have to put it behind us BUT…
I commented earlier in the week about Oliver’s decisions that cost West Ham 3 points at Birmingham and last week his red card against a Norwich player when they were 3-1 up cost them 2 points when they ended up drawing 3-3 all. Guess what, the red card was rescinded this week just like Pablo’s. A good referee should go virtually unnoticed, not have a direct effect on the result of the game I can only think it’s the pressure that they’re now under but I can’t remember refs being as bad in years gone by as they have in recent years. Mr Foy made an unbelievable amount of wrong decisions for both sides today. Diabolical.

What a weird game – we held our own physically against Stoke but had no cutting edge. I thought our defence was pretty good as Stoke never looked like scoring form open play – we defended Delaps throws and the high ball really well.
Barnes & Thomas ran their defence ragged but nearly every cross was overhit and we definately missed Brunty’s guile with the through ball.
Think it’s time Sharner had a rest and Reid was given a go, and maybe Mozza could do with a break and give Dorrens or Tchoi a go.
You can see we aint doing much wrong – but it’s goals that may be our let down again – I hope RDM has something up his sleeve for the transfer window.

Can someone explain why …..
Cech not Shorey?
Barnes not Tchoyi?
Morrison not Dorrans? (to a lesser extent).
Also, I wish Jara had been banned for 6 games so Reid could have played.
We are missing Ollsen too much and after yesterday, I’m hoping supporters now realise that Chris Brunt is one of our best players.
Di Matteo had better get it sorted out quickly, as I can see all the relegated team beginning with W. (perm any 3 from 4)

the first thing pulis instills into his players is something like this…waste as much time as possible, take at least a minute to 2 minutes each time we take a throw in, corner, free kick and on any substitution. feign injury, whenever possible particularly when the opposition is on the attack…in order to stop play. if we can waste around 15/20 minutes of the match we have less time to play therefore, more chance of getting a point (particularly when the official only adds on,in yesterday’s case 3 minutes per half) and if we’re very lucky we might sneak a goal in a very rare attack.
The only bit of class out there today was dorrans’ through ball..cant understand shorey being left out or carson still being 1st choice…has he ever saved a penalty?..i know the penalty was a dive but carson was like a bull at a gate. When will we, like blues or villa have a goalie than can almost single handedly win 3 points for his team.

Watched game on TV, Jones clearly dived for the first penalty, the ref got it all wrong again.
Albion were the better team but neither team played well, we did not create enough going forward, not enuoh players in the box for my liking. We should play two forwards at home, even when Cox came on he played in midfield.
Let’s hope we turn it around soon, come on you baggies.

Maybe we should take a leaf out Stokes book. We should start playing contiuous long balls up to bully boy forwards and clog up our defence with a few meat heads who basically line up on the goal line. Then we should get Roberto to bleat and moan about referees, throw our toys out of the pram a few times and then fall over in the penalty area for the next few games, get ourselves a few cheap points so we can ply our unwanted ugly trade in the Prem for a few more seasons before the money runs out. Maybe we could get some corners and have our centre backs barge people and the ball into the back of the net if things aren’t quite going our way.
Stanley Mathews would turn in his grave.
Well played again Albion. We had a bit of luck at the start of the season, now surely we’ve paid the debt off. Lets have a right good go at Everton and see if we can get back on track. No expectations, just play well and we’ll all be behind you.

What more can you say? Even Pulis admitted Albion were the better team until the first penalty, which completely changed the game.Having watched it played back on video,Jones clearly dived as there was no contact, but he saw an opportunity to go over Scott’s body,so he didn’t hesitate in going down. How much force does it take for a player well over six foot tall to fly through the air with arms outstretched? The Ref. was the other side of the area, with players running across his line of vision,so how can he give such a crucial decision with a shake of the head and a smug smile? As for the second pen.,one of the smallest guys on the pitch shoulder charges a Stoke player who immediately falls to the ground. Can you see that happening anywhere else on the pitch except in the penalty area? Beaten by the Stoke curse and another incompetent Referee.

You’re so right you do always beat us but what a price to pay. I know entertainment is hard to come by in Stoke but no one should be made to watch that on a regular basis.
And no, before you say it, you don’t play some good football, you have one or two good footballers (Tuncay, Etherington, Pennant, Whelan) but they are forced to conform to your brand of anti-football.
I won’t bother going over it as 8, 10, 22 and 26 have explained it much better than I could.
Have you tried watching Port Vale?

Watching the game from the Brummie Road, it wasn’t the ref who gave the first penalty it was the linesman… oops sorry referees assistant. he was infront of play so only saw what looked like Carson taking out the player. Everyone else in the ground saw the cheat… oops sorry the Stoke player heading for the ground before Carson reached him.
Maybee Demattio should moan about these decisions (the Blackpool farce as well) demand a league table for refs and spit his dummy. Then we may get a few dodgy decisions go our way in the next few games.
I hate the cheating Premier league!
30 Dorset. I am with you on the cheating Prem. but whilst we have Sepp Blatter in charge overall, we can forget using technology. There ARE cameras used or else we couldn’t see the highlights later from many angles. Why not have ALL penalties checked before the final decision? Once this was up and running, it would be quickly assessed and an accurate decision taken by the ref, a linesman and the 4th Official. ‘Divers’ would be dismissed. Penalties given not up for later argument. It does NOT have to apply to junior leagues as they do not have the acrobatic athletes we see in the Prem. Men who can double-somersault after scoring are not ‘yer average player’. It is so obvious to us it should be like this that it will never happen.
Common sense is the rarest of them all.

Waited until today to read the above posts, oh dear. The reason we lost Saturday was because we were awful, no drive , no desire, no creativity and shambolic defending .
Roberto’s team selection’s need serious scrutiny as does his substitutions and tactics.
We need two up front at home against the lesser lights, Cox is not a midfield player, Scharner needs to be dropped ( how on earth did he stay on Saturday) , Why does Odemwingie take the corners ?, What do Dorrans and Tchyoi need to do to get a start ?.
Blaming the Ref is predictable and crass, both were penalties , Stevie Wonder would have seen that.
Over to RDM to sort it and quick.

About the first penalty – Scott Carson didn’t argue!!!!

To many of our players were off the pace.
Did Morrison actually touch the ball before he went off?
We need a proper forward starting games, Odenwingie is more of a 2nd striker, he comes probing for the ball as did cox, their were point when it looked like we were playing 7 in midfield. casing point, we would of scored of barnes rally of crosses had someone been in the box.
Why substitute thomas, who has one trick and if that doesnt work spends the rest of teh game being ineffective. If he beats the man in the first 5 mins you know he will have a good game, if not you might as well sub him. Barnes and tcoyi both deserve more game action.
We need to end this bad run quickly otherwise it will drag on and on.

I was high up in the east stand and even I could see Jones dived for the first pen – the way he threw his hands up is always a sign that the player has “done a Drogba”…. the refs have just got to get better at spotting these things.
2nd pen looked 50/50 shoulder to shoulder at worst….. again a shocking decision.
Wall Heath – how you can say our defending was shambolic is beyond me….. we held a big physical side at bay with hardly any drama – did Carson have a save to make ???
With eyesight like that you would make a great ref !!!
I thought the defence played pretty well as Stoke didn’t create any other chances apart from the goals and never looked like scoring until the first penalty was given.
The problem was the lack of creativity from the midfield. Mulumbu did his job as usual but that was about it. The delivery from Thomas and Barnes was shocking.
I’m happy with this system against the better clubs, but at home against teams that we can beat, we need to be more adventurous. It’s all looking a bit tired and predictable at the moment.

I wouldn’t call your post crass but it is very predictable. I have a mate like you. He’s a season ticket holder, goes to most away games yet for some reason never has a good word to say about his own club. I think he believes this stance makes him appear sage and a bit more realistic than the common herd.
I think you’re right though Stevie Wonder and Chris Foy were probably the only ones that could see that penalty. As I said earlier, I couldn’t tell at the time but TV replays (on Sky not the brief MOTD ones.)clearly showed that there was no foul committed.
The second one was very reminiscent of the Donk penalty a couple of years back. You can almost hear the cogs turning in the referees ‘brain,’ “Unfashionable club, manager that doesn’t have a go at refs, ideal opportunity to get in ref basher Pulis’ good books.” Yes you’re right, technically it was an offence but in the real world they only seem to be given against lesser teams (Wolves fans will agree that they have suffered in this way.) If you want further proof have a look at the Vidic penalty that wasn’t given on Saturday, ten times worse than the Cox offence.
After seeing the miserable offerings of referees this season all incidents in the box should be monitored, if managers have complaints and they are found to be correct, as in the case of Stokes first “Penalty”. These incidents should be rescinded by the powers that be after the contest. players can then be fined for their cheating and final scores can be readjusted. Clubs and managers futures are put on the line by these cheats and they should be delt with accordingly. I know these are drastic actions but ” Bring Fairness Back To football”.

I think there is a danger we’re turning into Wolves fans on here.
At the risk of being branded a happy clapper is this RDM that can’t see what’s wrong the same one that we were all lauding a few short weeks ago?
Sometimes managers seem to be making mistakes. The thing is they are making decisions with a lot more behind the scenes knowledge than we have. They also have the slight disadvantage that if they make a mistake and it all goes t**s up, the result is there for all to see whereas with the great gift of hindsight we can all see exactly what should have been done. We can make our selections and substitutions safe in the knowledge that we will never be proved wrong.
This is the same bloke that we were worried about losing. He hasn’t become a mug overnight. He’s forgotten more about football and tactics than we’ve ever known. Nobody is infallible. FFS cut him a bit of slack.

Totally agree with you except that it’s a contentious point as to whether it would slow the game down. At the very least I’d support a panel to review all decisions in the days after. It wouldn’t help us I know but at least knowing Jones had picked up a three match ban would be some compensation.
I think your point about the junior footballers is more interesting. True their games wouldn’t be monitored in this way but isn’t it true that kids copy their heroes and if we can stamp out the diving in the PL, we’ll go a long way to stopping these foul habits at schoolboy level. At the moment we have the players of the next twenty years coming through thinking that cheating is part of the game.
As you say, thank you Mr Blatter. For nothing.

Why did Carson come racing out? you ask, basically because his decision making is pretty awful at the best of times, add that to his lack of communication and it is no wonder our defending is not the best, no clean sheets this year in the league says it all.Do not get me started on Carson being the Captain .I can only assume his favourite song is ‘should i stay or should i go ‘. The first penalty was debatable, Carson did what any goalkeeper would do when a striker comes through one on one and thats close down the striker, but he did perhaps commit to the floor abit too soon.
The second penalty, the most clear cut penalty you will ever see in my opinion, you cannot do what Cox did, those who say he just used his stength, or shoulder, thats fair enough if he hadnt sent the bloke flying through the air whilst the ball was abseloutely nowhere near Cox! Stupid decision from a young player who still has a lot to learn.
As for the result, I think a draw would probably have been a fair result, neither keeper was really tested during the game, we missed Brunt or the Dorrans of last season in the midfield, because for all the possession the midfield had, there was no genuine class in the who was going to create an opening out of nothing

If on the day the fixture lists came out, we’d have been offered 16 points from 14 games, I think we’d have all taken that, knowing we have games against Everton (to a lesser extent), Newcastle, Villa and Wolves to reach Christmas on 20 points.
I didn’t go to Saturday’s game (I do go to the games before anyone picks holes in that) so can’t really comment too much. But there were no fundamental problems 4 weeks ago with the personnel or formation, so why all of a sudden should there be wholesale change?
Other than the last 2 games, I think we’ve had mitigating circumstances for dropped points. We didn’t play well at Wigan and it doesn’t sound a great game Saturday, but even not playing well, we were well in both games and could’ve got something if a couple of things had dropped for us. There’s not an easy game in the Premiership, anyone who thinks there is has a short memory.
Wall Heath
I don’t want to spend all week arguing about Carson and I respect that you’re entitled to an opinion BUT Carson is a 25-year-old England international (Seaman or James weren’t capped that early). If he goes, who realistically would you expect us to get in that’s a better keeper??
Hart, Van Der Sar, Almunia, Fabianski, Reina, Howard, Green etc have all made more high-profile mistakes this season than Carson. I find that a lot of people have come to expect his excellent shot-stopping rather than applaud it and tend to use him as a scapegoat as soon as results go against us. If we’d had Buffon in goal Saturday, we wouldn’t have scored.

Forgot Sunderland , i apologise ,as for my posts well that’s life i guess, however I still think Carson is responsible directly or indirectly with a lot of our problems at the back, we need a Goalkeeper who commands his box and communicates with his defence , Carson for me does neither.

Take your point about not scoring Saturday, however i truly believe there as to be a better Goalkeeper around than Carson, he fills me with dread every time he goes near the ball , i would love to know what the back four think about him.

Come on lads. Lets not soil ourselves just yet. We have come up and gone down quite a lot in the last 10 years, so a relegation scrap surely won’t be out of our comfort zone as fans.
Personally I still think we have the best chance of escaping danger that we’ve had in all that time. We have points on the board and we have players who can win games at this level as they’ve already proved. We need a win from somewhere but RDM and the boys will make it happen. The league has a feel of the Championship this season and we seem to like that kind of league.
Lets not turn into the dingles and keep faith with a manager and squad who need our support more than ever. One day we will beat Stoke and one day much sooner we will win a Premiership game. Once we break the cycle we’ll start to pick up points again.
