Simon Cox: I’m proving Premier League calibre

Carling Cup hero Simon Cox believes he is “100 times better” as a player after 16 months at Albion.

The striker-turned-midfielder reckons he has started to prove himself among the Baggies ‘big boys’ after climbing from League One to the Premier League in just over a year.

And he believes he is getting to grips with a midfield role in the club’s 4-5-1 system. Cox scored twice in Tuesday’s Carling Cup victory at Leicester having netted in the third-round win over Manchester City, and he believes 16 months at The Hawthorns is showing in his play.

He said: “I am 100 times better now. When I first came to West Brom I was a young lad who didn’t really know a lot and had just played a few games.

“I’d had a good season but it was a League One season and I had to prove to the lads who had just come down from the Premier League that I could mix it with the big boys.

“I am now in the Premier League and if you asked a few of them they would say they have seen vast improvements in my game.”

Cox made his name as a striker with a prolific season at Swindon in League One and enjoyed a fruitful spell up front last season midway through Albion’s Championship promotion campaign.

But since Albion have changed to a play a lone frontman, Cox’s chances have come in a central midfield berth. He said: “I have slotted in there quite comfortably. It has helped me.”

Albion’s league trip to Blackburn has been moved to Sunday, January 23 for Sky coverage (4pm kick-off).

What I like about Simon is his attitude. No sulking or hissy fits,he just keeps pushing to improve himself, waiting for any opportunities. He’s grateful to be at Albion, and considers himself a premiership player because he is part of the squad, although he doesn’t get to play that many games. He’s a confident guy, with good ability, but accepts the situation. It makes a refreshing change from hearing of premiership prima donna’s with overblown egos that whinge when they can’t get their own way.

    Simon,
You have certainly come on leaps and bounds. That second strike against Leicecter had the hallmark of the phenomenon that is ” TONY (Bomber) BROWN ” stamped all over it. I see great things for you as you can raid from deep.

IMO he is our most natural finisher but as a premier league player would find it hard, in saying that he is still young and has plenty of time to mould in to a free scoring midfielder.

I love his attitude and is grabbing the opportunities that he is given to him without any fuss.

    Good on ya kidda!

If you watch the highlights of our cup match I like the fact he waved a player of ours out the way before unleashing his cruise missile of a shot, GET OUT THE WAY!

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
