Key Albion duo are sent for scans

Albion today sent key duo Jonas Olsson and Marc-Antoine Fortune for scans after the pair limped out of Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Fulham.

The Baggies cemented their flying start to the Premier League season with a convincing win against the Cottagers to move briefly into the division’s top four.

But the success came at a cost as centre-back Olsson and striker Fortune, scorer of the winning goal, were forced off at the same time early in the second half with injury problems.

Boss Roberto Di Matteo said: “Jonas came off with an Achilles problem and Marco with an ankle problem.

“We will see how they are after scans. That will tell us more.”

Albion will be keen not to lose the duo for their next Premier League match a week today at Blackpool, although neither was likely to figure at Leicester tomorrow in the Carling Cup.

Di Matteo also hope to have his options boosted for the clash with the Tangerines by the return of Peter Odemwingie from a troublesome knee problem.

The Baggies boss added: “We want him back as soon as possible but obviously we don’t want to rush him back and then lose him for a long time.”

Hopefully neither of them will be out for too long, although i’m not overly worried if they miss a couple of weeks considering our strength in depth.

Pablo is a quality player despite not having much of a look in so far and is more than capable of coming in for Jonas. As for Fortune, Odemwingie should be fit soon so he would replace him naturally and Bednar can do just as good a job as Fortune. For once it’s nice that we can potentially lose quality players to injuries and still be able to bring in more than capable replacements.

    Another good performance on sat.
Great to see Ibanez replace Olsen and cover without any disturbance at the back.
    Think it’s sorted out now.
Getting concerned though cus DOZZA isn’t gonna be content on the bench.
See transfer rumours about Liverpool bidding 9m for BRUNT?
    Maybe snap their hands off?
MADMICK recons his lot won’t get sucked into a relegation battle.
Aren’t they already in one of those positions?
I know it’s early days and hopefuly they can get out of it.
How he fobs their lot off with his arrogance.
Glad we’ve got a decent honest gaffer.
Just hope no one comes sniffing.

It is good that we have high quality replacements, but the gaffer picks Jonas because he has other qualities besides being a high class defender. I will admit to some small bias on this because he would be first on all my team sheets. We got tanked at Chelsea. He didn’t play.
Feet on the floor gentlemen, there are no easy games. I don’t want to appear rude Brierley, but Brunt is now essential to our team. Why sell anybody from our FIRST choice side ? We have no need. We are well run. Others will soon have their moment of truth financially. The Titanic was unsinkable wasn’t it ?

On the subject of people possibly leaving, how about looking on the positive side? Most of the quality players in the squad have long term contracts,if we continue to do well, why would they want to go? If they did want to leave,JP would ask a very high fee,and most clubs are struggling financially,so they would either back down,or have to find big bucks to pay us.As for the Manager, well Ossie left us for Spurs, and Mowbray took his dream job at Celtic, look what happened.RDM’s a clever guy,he knows a move elsewhere COULD work out well, but you could also fall flat on your face.He said he’s very happy at Albion, and grateful to the club,so I don’t see much chance of movement in the near future.Just enjoy the good times while they’re here.It could be worse,we could be in the bottom three and have millions of pounds worth of strikers firing blanks.Even worse, our neighbours could also be flying high. What a nightmare that would be!

Cyril Randle wasn’t implying I wanted Ibanez in place of Olsen just that it was good that a replacement didn’t upset things at the back as it used to.
The whole set up is great with cover in all depts.

Fair play to WBA, you have made a fantastic start like a few promoted clubs have done in the past (Burnley, Hull etc). You have been extremely fortunate with injuries so far and lady luck is shining on you with refereeing decisions at the moment but you have given it a real go and fair play. I have been quite shocked to read that you are only getting 22k at games? Could just be the financial climate.

We have made a terrible start to the campaign and everything that could possibly go wrong has done, so far. With the returning Zubar, Hunt, Henry, Milijas & Mouyokolo that is 5 players who will start and by the time the derby comes around in December I don’t think there will be a great deal of distance between us in the table.

Very perceptive of you. Plenty of people going aah but it’s not a sympathetic aah, it’s an aah of wonderment at the quality of our football.

BTW. Our ground was choc-a-block on Saturday and not many of them from Fulham. That means we had lots of new supporters. Hope you enjoyed it and it will get even better for you when you get used to fans not booing the team, even when they go behind.

    PS.
What particular year are you talking about for your natural order?
Yes, Villa have been overall top dogs for the last thirty years, can’t argue with that but Wolves next??????
We’ve finished above you all but three seasons since the turn of the century.
In the 1990′s you had the upper hand.
    In the 80′s we did.
    In the 70′s you did.
    In the 60′s we did.
The 50′s is an interesting time. On League Championships you slightly shaded us but what younger people, (not sure if you’re one of them,) may not realise, is that back in the 50′s and 60′s the FA cup was regarded as by far the more prestigious trophy to win. I think Cyril and some of the other older posters will confirm this and we outscored you on that.

What I’m saying is that I really can’t see where you get your massive superiority complex from. Or is it the classic psychological fixation that you are actually overcompensating for a massive inferiority complex?

The answers there and you know you want to do it. Come on over. I know you came to watch us on Saturday all you have to do now is admit it on here. Or deny it. You know it means the same thing.

PPS. If you have the caps lock on you don’t need to press the shift key as well or it makes you look a bit thick and I know you’re not.

Why do your fans keep comparing us to Burnley and Hull?

They both came from nowhere for there first pop at the PL.
We’ve been building towards this over the last ten years.

Both had a paper thin squad and were unable to cope with injuries and suspensions.
We have at least one quality player to cover in every position (even left back which must rankle with you.)

Hull had a Flash Harry Manager and Burnley lost their manager which coincided with the start of their decline.
We have a level headed manager, excellent coaching staff, first class medical team and a scouting system you must have wet dreams about.

Hull spent money they didn’t have on big name over the hill players. Burnley chose not to overspend.
We have a squad full of young players on long contracts (young and hungry as you would call them.) Blended with some quality experienced players. We have built our squad and our financial stability over years of yoyoing. While you and the media were laughing at us, we were patiently (some more patiently than others) building towards our current position.

26,000 on Saturday. It’s a difficult problem getting the ticket pricing right but who could forecast just how bad the financial climate would become. Still it could be worse, we could be stuck with a half empty 40,000 seater stadium couldn’t we?

    One other thing.
    Lady Luck??????
It’s an overused phrase credited to a number of different sportsmen but the harder we work the luckier we get. Or maybe it is true that the top teams get more than their share of ref’s decisions?
I’ll leave it to you to decide. Meanwhile perhaps your bus driver should practice his parking a bit more.

Brierley, I think we got our wires crossed. It’s the heady euphoria of the minute. I have no argument with Ibanez playing, we are lucky to have three centre backs of such quality. What I was pointing out is that Brunt is worth more than 9 million because it would be selling an asset we might not replace easily. That kid is playing the sort of balls through defences that Arsenal do, the shredding type that opens a defence wide. My approach would be you can’t have him. Full stop. To any club. It isn’t a coincidence that most of our promising players are maturing so well. IT’S THE COACHING. Brunt is now a midfielder, growing by the day, with as sweet a left foot as Beckham’s right.
TRBH. I think Oscar Wilde would have been happy with that post mate! Certainly if either Wulfie came over here expecting an arm round the shoulder and a pat on the back for a good effort against Chelski, they were deeply disappointed. We’re where they think they ought to be and they’re where they predicted we would be. (Can you untangle that, it does make sense). I still think they’ll come good, it’s early days.

It`s all very well talking about luck, the lack of injuries/suspensions and refereeing decisions, which you and many of your fellow Wolves fans are suggesting points to our currently elevated status.
I would love to see you back up that theory, because you say it dont make it so.

Olsson, arguably our best and most influential defender gets injured on Saturday, replaced by Ibanez (whose signing bytheway was ridiculed by Wulfs on these very pages) and the transition was seamless.
    Luck or good management ?

Fortune hobbles off, who was standing in for the already injured and excellent Odemwingie.

Thomas, his signature season already intrupted by two previous injuries.

Miller & Cech, long term absentees.

Morrison, 3 game suspension for a challenge that wouldn`t have merited a finger wagging in a parks game.

    Refereeing decisions.

Are the two goals againt Fulham the basis of your notion ?

If so you must also take into account the Bednar “goal” and the blatantly obvious penalty against Thomas…..both not given.

Good luck against Manure tonight, hope you beat them.

The most interesting article I’ve found on here is the interview with MAF.

What does that say about the spirit in the squad, that he accepts that Peter Odemwingie will come straight back in when he is fit. No hysterics, no tantrums, no sulks.

I think it is an example of players trusting the Manager. He has no favourites, he picks the best player for the position as long as they are in form and working hard enough.

I know we will lose some games eventually but unlike previous seasons I’m not worried about it because I’m confident we will win more than we lose.

    16 Cyril.
They haven’t realised that it was a Chelsea side cruising through a game and doing just enough after a hard game in midweek on a plastic pitch in Moscow. Can’t wait for reality to bite.

Saw one on their site saying that having watched MOTD he thought Wolves were much more skillful than Albion!

Never mind Oscar Wilde. Stanley Unwin would have been proud of that one sentence of yours. I got it in the end but not before my mental tongue was tied.

    18 Wall Heath.
I quite like Phil Brown because he is such a dipstick and yet obviously has no self awareness.
My favourite was when he tried to take credit for talking a woman out of committing suicide on the Humber Bridge. After spending the entire interview steering the conversation towards it, he told his version of the incident before saying ‘but I don’t really want to talk about it?’ Brilliant.

As for Lone Wolf. Like yourself, some people on here are hard on him. He is a troubled soul. He knows what he wants to do but he’s like a man reluctant to leave his boring, dowdy wife for a bright, new, exciting woman that has caught his eye. He knows he should be loyal and do the right thing but it’s so tempting and he can’t stop flirting and keep away from her.

    So go easy on him.
