Gabriel Tamas putting down roots
Friday 22nd October 2010, 4:00PM BST.
Albion defender Gabriel Tamas believes he can produce the best football of his career by ending his globetrotting days and putting down roots at the Hawthorns.
The 26-year-old played for six different clubs in five different countries in a decade before joining the Baggies.
But, having penned a three-year contract in the summer, he hopes stability can help him fulfil his potential in England.
Tamas said: “The fact I’ve moved around a lot has been both a positive and negative thing for me.
“The difficult part was not staying with a team for more than a year. It’s hard for a player to show his true potential during such a short period.
“A lot of players need six months to a year just to settle in. Gonzalo Higuain is a good example of this.
“When he moved to Real Madrid, he was not so good during his first year – but he’s been incredible since.
“That’s why I hope to see out my contract here because I feel really settled.
“Off the field, I feel I’m the kind of guy who can adapt quickly to a new culture – and that was a big positive for me as I moved around.
“I love all the countries I’ve lived in and I like travelling to new places.”
Tamas was speaking during a question and answer session to promote Kick It Out’s One Game, One Community anti-racism campaign.
Albion will promote the campaign at tomorrow’s match against Fulham with banners and special players’ warm-up T-shirts.
Tamas, who is the club’s ambassador for the campaign, said: “It makes me very sad when I hear reports of racism at football matches in other countries.
“At the end of the day, no matter what colour our skin is, we are all the same.”
