Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Albion 1 Bolton 1
Saturday 2nd October 2010, 5:10PM BST.
James Morrison rescued a dramatic point with an equaliser against Bolton that extend Albion’s unbeaten run to five games.
The struck from close range in the 78th minute from Peter Odemwingie’s cross to give the Baggies a deserved share of the spoils.
But they again had to battle from behind, after Johan Elmander had given the Trotters the lead on 64 minutes.
The result meant the Baggies remain unbeaten in league action at the Hawthorns since January.
The home side edged a first-half that failed to explode into life.
But it was the visitors who should have led on 13 minutes when Gary Cahill escaped the marking of Paul Scharner to get a free header to a Martin Petrov corner, but sent his effort wastefully over the bar.
Chris Brunt went close for Albion with a 25-yard drive that hit Albion old-boy Paul Robinson and flew just wide.
Then Peter Odemwingie was a fraction off target when he twisted in the D and tried a snap-shot.
It was the Nigerian who had Albion’s best chance of the half, nipping in between Cahill and Gretar Steinsson to meet a James Morrison cross but headed over from a good position.
Seven minutes before half time Albion allowed another free header at a corner, this time for Steinsson, who headed straight at Scott Carson in the Albion goal.
The second-half was more eventful than the first and Bolton could have scored twice early on, first when Carson made a fine save to deny Martin Petrov and then when Nicky Shorey cleared a Cahill header off the line.
Steinsson was inches away from heading into his own net from a Brunt corner, but it was Bolton who were ahead on 64 minutes.
Albion failed to clear a high ball from the edge of their box and a neat flick by Davies found Elmander, who produced a cool finish for his fourth goal of the season.
Petrov should have made sure of the win for the visitors, racing clear after seizing on a mistake by Gabriel Tamas, only to somehow fire wide.
Odemwingie then nipped in after an error by Zat Knight but failed to test visiting goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
But Albion were level with 12 minutes left, Odemwingie the creator.
The Nigerian drifted out to the right and delivered a superb cross, with Morrison nipping ahead of Matthew Taylor to head home.
Albion could have been ahead two minutes later when Odemwingie produced a similar cross for Brunt, but his shot was blocked brilliantly by Jaaskelainen.

Michael, ever heard the saying about people that live in glass houses? It’s only a bit of banter. I take it your a Wolves fan. You lot have been giving it out for the last 2 years, if you can’t take it don’t give it out!
I thought on the balance of play, a draw was the fair result today. We were a little flat today if I’m honest, but still a point and we’re exactly were we want to be at this stage of the season, well away from the bottom 3.
Man Utd next up, we go into it with no fear and nothing to lose.

A fair result in my eyes and another week of growing confidence within the team.
This was an important draw today and sets a benchmark of what to expect with these type of teams.

Great hard fought duel. Bolton are a strong side and don’t they play to their strengths. Our lads again gave a good account of themselves. All in all
a very enthralling game with Hara, Shorey and Brunt
outstanding. Looks as though we had a few Bolton
fans in our Brummie^road^end. Top of our

out of all the posts on here all agree the draw was a fair result i was not negative in anyway towards the team however it was a good result for the wolves, one of the worst team performances i have seen all season from any team in the prem and as for MM why make all the signings and then not play them the man is a loon or a baggie fan in the closet lol

Another good team performance. Not as smooth as recent weeks probably down to the buffeting you get whan playing Bolton but good effort and application from all concerned. Excellent to see the spirit in a set of players willing to give their all and help each other out.

I’m back today from a week away. Scanning through last weeks blogs I’d like to thank all those that pointed out the brilliant posts on the dark side.
Special mention to Forever for the Laughing Wolf epistle. It was everything you said it was but for me the really hilarious bit was in his follow up post. He picked his team for the game including ‘Mancienne (pace.)’ I’m presuming that (pace) is the justification for picking him which suggests LW doesn’t really believe he’s good enough but at least he can run fast. Was it not Shadrag that couldn’t stay off our site telling us what a brilliant squad they had? At least the much vaunted £15 mill strike force is showing us the way to do it.
PS. To paraphrase Brodie in Jaws ‘I think you’re gonna need a bigger bus.’

Another good performance. Mulumbu MoM, great cross from Odemwingie for the goal, pity he couldn’t get on the scoresheet.

I thought Olsson was Man Of The Match, with Carson a close second, yet the defence looked a bit shaky today at times.
Bomber, I have another pet hate: Needless, pointless, wayward, back-passes into and across our defence, when a forward ball is possible. Yesterday they frightened the cow-life out of me at times.
A positive thought: If, two games ago, The Great Oracle had whispered, “You will come out of Arsenal and Bolton with 4 points out of the 6 on offer”. We would have had orgasms and said, “A point at Arsenal and 3 off Bolton. There is a God”, gone home and given the missus a kiss, all for no reason.
Top 6 and top midland team. The hawthorns is quickly becoming a fortress. I’d prefer us to not keep conceeding first, but it’s great to see the strength to fight back.
With the exception of Michael, the dingles are all too busy calling for MM’s head on their own pages to dirty our pages with their nonsense!
Bring on Utd.

Its a sign of just how far we have come in a such short time that I feel gutted we never took all three points, but all in all a draw was the right result, and, as I said before the game, we have now got the dreaded Premiership awards curse that has tripped up so many, is now out of the way.
I do believe Tchoyi could have been better used, if had been given half an hour or so, with his speed and strength Bolton was ripe for the picking, but, offered where we are now at the beginning of the season I would have snatched your hand off, so, in DiMatteo we trust.
The mystery of tickets continues, 22,000????, so that would be almost 20% down, or, 1 in 5 seats empty, yet the BRE was rammed, I could see SME was sold out, so that leaves Halfords and East, but there was no significant gaps there either, so where the hell were these 5000 seats????? beginning to wonder if this creative accounting for the tax man ;-}
Anyone else shocked that the season ticket was won by a pretty blonde young lady, rather than an ugly old bloke!!!!!! fixed or what!
On the plus side, isn’t it great that the 2nd comment is a Ding, you would think they had got enough to worry about without wondering what our boards are saying!!!!
P.s. Sven at Leicester, should make for an interesting Cup tie.

Don’t know what all our orange friends are moaning about on the dark side, they would happily have taken sitting just behind Liverpool in the table before the season started!
A draw was a fair result. I really thought we were going to struggle in this one. They are a muscular side and going from Arsenal to Bolton is like going from the Artic to the Sahara (although Bolton have been playing some good football this season).
I hope Tchoyi gets a good run out next week. Everytime he comes on the opposition hate it. We really should be utilising him as much as possible IMO, but RDM is the best manager in the country at the moment so who am I to question.
Owen Coyle says that St Peter was offside when the ball was played forward from defense. I don’t think he fully understands the more finite details of the offside rule. PO may have been slightly offside when the ball was played but he ran into an on side position on the shoulder of the last defender. He then proceeded to out pace the defender and take the ball off the toe of Barnes who was also ahead of him. None of the defenders put thier hands up as they surely would knowing full well that chasing PO would be useless. That got my goat a little I must admit. He’s fast, the Bolton defense are not, end of story.
Cracking result though boys. A draw means we’re still unbeaten and we’ve passed through the hoo doo of beating a top side and getting player and manager of the month reletively unscathed. Chuffed and proud and top of the Midland clubs. Lets bask in that for a moment boys….TOP OF THE MIDLAND CLUBS.
Michael, if you really must moan get back on the Wolves steam mate I’m sure they’re all laying it on thick over there. By the way last week a fair majority over there were going on about how the Baggies start to the season is a flash in the pan and using phrases like ‘look at what happened to Burnley’ so I don’t think a little harmless banter is out of the question do you? Or do you not want to indulge in banter with the club who are TOP OF THE MIDLANDS LEAGUE. Enjoy.

3. Totally agree with your point about Tchoyi, after how well he played against City what does he have to do to get a game even when JT is out?!?!
Although Morrison scored I don’t see why he is in the team as we have players on the bench that can do more from the start. He had a couple of shots (none on target apart from the header) and I think Tchoyi or Barnes should be given a chance. Just personal opinion so please don’t hurl abuse at me however if people would like to tell me their opinions of him, by all means go ahead.

Olson was great. As I watched this I was thinking, we finally look like a premiership team.
Bolton played well too. Although the first half had few chances it was still good to see two good technical teams passing the ball (credit to Coyle for trying to get Bolton playing football!) Even when we went behind I was sure we would get back into the game and in our previous recent top flight incarnations I have never thought that.
Credit to fans clapping Paul Robinson off the pitch as well.

I’m happy getting the point. I was afraid of a letdown after the huge win last week and coming away with nothing. So far so great. Keep it up boys, one game at a time and keep working hard.

i said at the start of the season it was important to beat the teams around us,ie man u,chelsea, arsenal, man city, aye boing boing

Again this represents a point that after going behind, we probably would have lost on previous premiership sorties.
I said before the game that Bolton should not be underestimated, and so it proved, they are tough, but there is nothing attritional about the way they play, indeed they are a very good team.
The season is still in it`s infancy, but i think we are witnessing a better and more resilient Albion, and i am very hopeful.
Which brings me on seamlessly to one of our detractors from the dark side.
Bully
First of all, welcome back.
Secondly, loved the Jaws analogy.
Hmm LW……….He has written many things that are ridiculously funny and irksome all at the same time. However, i think his signature work came in the form of his patronising Wolves blueprint of thriving in a premiership envioroment, and how not a single Albion player could get anywhere near their subs bench.
I have a feeling that he may be walking a lonely path with that viewpoint right now.
And also Bully, if you havn`t seen it on the Wigan 2 Wolves 0 thread.
There is someone on there called Lich King, post 94 who says, and i quote
” Behind the Tescos-absolutely insulting to a Wolves fan`s intelligence”
Talk about leaving yourself wide open !!!

Draw was a fair result.
We should however of started with either Tchoyi or Barnes. Without a pacey wideman we lacked an outlet to pull a very good defense out of shaped. Morrison hasnt got the pace to beat players in the prem.

24 Walsall.
While I see your point about Tchoyi looking very useful and a real danger to the opposition I think we tend to look at it from a fans point of view.
Morrison was immense against Arsenal and while slightly off his best (like a few of our players on Saturday) you know exactly what you will get from him (which like all of our players now, slightly off his best is still very good.}
Tchoyi is still settling into British fotball and the defensive side of his game is still a bit of an unknown quantity. While it would have been nice to win against Bolton I think it was very important we didn’t lose.
What I like a lot about the current management team is that I can see a massive improvement in the players that have been here for some time, Brunt being a prime example. Last time we were up he was a quality Championship/passable PL player. He has improved his work rate, heading and defensive awareness, add these to the passing, crossing and shooting ability he already had and I feel he is now a top quality PL player. I look forward to seeing the same happen with other players, Giles Barnes being a prime example, he oozes promise and seems to have the right attitude to want to learn.

31 TRBH- Talking about the management team, one night last week I heard Tom Ross interviewing Eddie Newton on the radio.Tom said ‘we always hear about how well Roberto is doing,he seems to get all the praise, what role would you say you have in the management team?’In reply,Eddie thought, then said ‘My job is to make Robbie look good’.Much laughter followed.

I’ve got to agree with Cyril and MancBaggie in that Olsson was immense. Nothing spectacular, but when you consider that Elmander and Davies are renowned for their aerial ability and physical presence, neither got any change out of him, I can’t remember either beating him to a header over the 90 minutes.
Mulumbu everywhere as always, what a find this kid was.
I also agree that the temptation was there to throw Tchoyi on earlier.
All in all, a good point against a diffcult side. Even when we were in the ascendancy, you never felt they were out of the game. I think they’ll be comfortable and we matched them so all signs still good.
Also, another word for Brunty’s defensive work, all credit to the coaching staff for this, chasing and tracking was never part of his game in years gone by.
TRBH- Welcome back, I had found it odd you’d spent years fighting Albion’s corner after watching tripe then disappeared after that magical day at the Emirates. I’d entertained the idea you’d gone to join Kev on a beach. To quote the Lone Ranger: “My work here is done…..”

Every team has a few unforgiving types in the crowd, but overall we gave Robbo the sort of welcome and ‘tarra’ to be proud of. We should remember that players have families and a right to the best salary they can get for their services. Six years is a very long time in a footballer’s career.

On the subject of the dark side,I’ve been taking a look over there, because for some strange reason, our regular ‘visitors’ have gone missing. The wolves posts have to be seen to be believed. But they ARE funny.Because they can’t face us,they end up arguing with, and insulting, each other. With breathtaking arrogance, they demand to bring in Martin O’Neill NOW.Does anyone know if he has the slightest interest in going to wolves? One guy said Mick should have left when he got them promoted. What gratitude. And some of the comments-’we play pretty football(???)up to the halfway line…’,and ‘we are a misunderstood team unfairly treated by referees’.Yeah,Karl Henry was running over for a drink when he accidently kicked the guy 10 foot into the air.You couldn’t make it up.

Re:- The Lich King post. ‘Insulting a Wolves fan’s intelligence.’
Post No 150 ulv says it all.
‘On a more serious note though three points come Saturday and the PL table will look a whole lot better from a Wolves perspective.’
It certainly will as there is an International break and no one is playing.
Scanning the posts over there also summed them up for me. At the beginning everyone wants Mick out and O’Neill in. By the end of the piece there are more slagging O’Neill off than wanting him. Says it all, they want him sacked before he’s even got the job.
Laughing Wolf.
I think you do him a grave injustice Forever. Didn’t he concede that Graham Dorrans might just get on their bench at a pinch?
On a serious note though. Have a look at post 124 Steve Bull’s rentboy LOL.
It has all of the hallmarks of LW handiwork on the odd occasion he posts on his own site. The real clincher is that he picks his team including the trademark Mancienne (holding) holding what he doesn’t divulge.
Has LW finally lost it totally? Is he posting under false names on his own site? The only doubt I have is that he doesn’t mention us.
PS Remember when Carl Hoefkens was supposed to have said that he didn’t like being over here in a Belgian newspaper. Shadrag couldn’t stop bringing it up on here. Funny that his ability to read Flemish has disappeared now Jelly is saying the same thing.
I also remember a few seasons back Happy Baggie being honest and referring to the Albion as being the equivelent of the ‘five pinter’ outside the disco.
He took an awful lot of stick from Wulfies on here. I would like to ask these same people, is there a dark enough alley and enough lager in the world to make Wolves look attractive at the moment? Please try a little honesty.
I watched the last half hour of the Wolves game under the BRE on Sat and honestly couldn’t believe what I was watching. Wolves had the excuse of being down to ten men but Wigan were unbelievably awful as well. The MOTD stats must set some alarm bells ringing at the Mol too.
Wigan 2-0 Wolves.
Shots on target.
Wigan 9-0 Wolves.
Shots off target.
Wigan 6-1 Wolves..
On the bright side though they now have a similar run of games to ours at the start of the season, so they will have a chance to catch Arsenal etc when they have their minds on the CL. Good luck with that.
Some good news from down the road though.
Steve Morgan has said the work to increase the capacity at Molineaux will still go ahead. Apparently he needs the money in Redrow to enable him to bankroll Martin O’Neill as the new manager…….of Liverpool.
PS Excellent write up of our game on the News of the World website and even better one of the Wolves game.
One last thing. It might seem from this post that I hate all things Wolves. Not true, I have a lot of time for most of their fans, especially the likes of Filton, Malvern and Debenhams etc. All of this bile is aimed at the moronic minority that come on here giving it the big un’ before a game has been played. There’s a long way to go yet and I hope the Wolves can get themselves out of trouble and we keep all of our Midlands teams in the Prem, even Stoke.

In fairness I couldn’t careless about his opinion as I doubt he’s seen a full game of ours for some time.
Continuing the theme of the dark-side comments. On the recent Henry sit-down story, Brummierob’s back and he couldn’t resist a dig. Apparently it’s an average league this year as we beat Arsenal and Liverpool beat Blackpool. That bloke sounds more like laughingwolf every day.
I’m not sure if he’s implying it was a stronger division last year with Burnley, Pompey and the mighty Hull, but he does seem to be overlooking how much of a negative light it puts his team’s current plight in, if they’re performing so badly in this ‘average’ league!!

Somen Tchoyi is a new player coming to play
in the English Premier League, not including
him enough in games is very bad managment as
I can see him getting very fed up with the
situation very quickly,he had a barn storming
game against Man City and we havnt seen him
since, the guy will now into this 2 week break
feeling not wanted and totally unhappy.
Jeremy Peace brought Marc-Antoine Fortune for
2.5M to be our 1st or 2nd choice striker so
should really be getting game time ahead of
Simon Cox isnt good enough for the Championship never mind the Premiership.
Roberto Di Matteo has had a cracking start to
the season although some of decisions are
baffling like including a player who clearly
has other things on his mind,I suggest our
manager lets Dorrans have some time off and
bring in Tchoyi who seems to be very hungry.

Torres for 40M then rebuild.

The national media don’t have a clue when it comes to the Baggies. I remember reading a write up on a Baggies game in the ‘Mirror’ a couple of years back now. The moron who wrote it described Albion ‘coming on in their BLACK AND WHITE STRIPES!!!’. I mean how much research do you have to do? Maybe he was colour blind but if your a journo surely you know the colours that all the teams in the top two divisions wear.
As for the Wulfies, I find it hilarious that before the season started we were told that we came up from the worst ever Championship and that they were an ‘established’ mid table Prem side. Apparently we’ll end up like Burnley, but I guess that won’t matter as much when they become the new Derby.

Its not only the national media not paying us our dues, just watched Monday nights local round up for the weekend, Central (or what ever they are calling themselves this year) started with “we start with the inform Midlands team of the moment……Stoke!!!!” no mention of us being top of Midlands mini league, Manager of the month, Player of the month etc etc, (actually Football Focus Saturday never mentioned the latter two points, and I think neither did M.O.T.D.???) the Beeb local news was even weirder, top story Villa still got no replica shirts, and, oh, Albion drew, and not even a V.T. clip, just the comment, unbelievable.

Are we being paranoid??????
No I think sometimes we have to accept that they are out to get us.
I may be wrong but there seems to have been a pro-Wolves, anti-WBA stance on the ITN Central news for a while now. I think their main sports bloke Bob something or other is a Wolves fan and no coincidence their main football summariser is an ex-Wolves player.
The Beeb’s Midlands Today merely perpetrates the BBC attitude to us. I sometimes wonder if WHOAREWBA????? from the dark side is actually the Director General.

I think we should all get together and form a type of “Black Country Night Out”.
We could call ourselves ” The Black Country BAGGIES”.

Agree with how we are still not getting our credit. Its just unbelievable!!
I think the only local programme that was fair was that program on BBC 1 Late Kick off for the midlands they were fair and never blatantly biassed for other teams like the dingles. But Im not sure if its on anymore?
Watching motd was actually ok the last couple of weeks. Fair play to Lineker & Shearer who praised us for the Arsenal win. And to this week hear the comment about how yo-yos eventually sticking at the top from Lineker was music to my ears…. its just the idiots like Lorro, Hanson and people like Martin Keown who come on the show and write us off!
As far as the result goes, I am like RDM very satisfied with the result. Draws are sometimes underated. We didnt have enough of them in the premiership under Mowbray. His gung ho, open football theoery tended to either get a win or loss either way. Rarely producing a hard fought draw.
But after Man U we have a 2 month spell of quite a few winnable games. Which we need to take advantage of. Thats where the work really starts…
Oh & 71 – Think that would be a good idea lol!
I’ve wondered what it would be like to meet some of the people we agree with / argue with on this site. Maybe at the end of the season when we stay up we should all have our own E&S celebration and review the season :)
