Albion Res 1 Man City Res 3
Albion surrendered their unbeaten record in the Premier Reserve League as two first-half penalties put City on course for victory.
John Guidetti scored twice from the spot to put the visitors 2-0 up before Sam Mantom reduced the arrears just before the interval.
But Mantom had a second-half penalty saved by former Villa keeper Stuart Taylor before Ben Mee made sure of City’s win with a late header.
And Albion suffered another blow when Joe Mattock limped off with a thigh injury just 27 minutes into his first match since being sentenced for affray and since picking up an ankle problem.
Mattock made a promising start to his comeback match as he sprinted forward in the eighth minute and unleashed a powerful shot that visiting goalkeeper Taylor turned around the near post.
The Baggies, however, fell behind on 18 minutes to a dubious penalty.
Paul Downing was penalised for a foul on Donal McDermott when he appeared to win the ball and Guidetti blasted the spot-kick into the bottom corner.
The visitors got their second spot-kick seven minutes before the interval when Guidetti tumbled under Abdoulaye Meite’s clumsy challenge, and the big striker stepped up to slot home another low shot.
Albion reduced the arrears, two minutes before the break, when Mantom completed a clever one-two on the edge of the box with Romaine Sawyers before darting towards goal and finishing from a tight angle.
The Baggies pressed hard for an equaliser, with Simon Cox especially lively in a withdrawn role, but they could not find a breakthrough and, in the closing stages, Mee made it 3-1.
Albion (4-2-3-1): Allsop; Zuiverloon, Downing, Meite (Gayle, 79), Mattock (Brown, 27); Mantom, Thorne; Hurst, Cox, Barnes (Elford-Alliyu, 67); Sawyers. Subs (not used): Tebbutt, Berahino.

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
