West Brom rule out Simon Cox exit on loan

Roberto Di Matteo today told Albion striker Simon Cox he is “going nowhere” for the time being – as Luke Moore headed out of The Hawthorns on loan.

Moore has moved a step closer to ending his nightmare Baggies career by joining Derby, initially for a month.

But Cox will not be following the former Villa man away from in the Baggies in the near future despite hinting in midweek that he would consider a loan.

Moore looks increasingly unlikely to play again for the Baggies after the £3.5m misfit was left out of the 25-man Premier League squad for the first half of the season.

His deal expires at the end of the season and, after a dismal two-and-a-half years at The Hawthorns, will not be offered a new contract.

But he has been handed a chance to impress elsewhere by Rams boss Nigel Clough.

Clough said: “Luke is a player who has expressed a great desire to come and play football and he will have opportunities to do so.”

Moore follows fellow striker Chris Wood out of Albion after the teenage New Zealand international joined Barnsley until December.

But Cox will remain at The Hawthorns for the time being, especially as fellow forward Roman Bednar was out of today’s trip to Arsenal with a thigh problem.

Head coach Di Matteo said: “At the moment Simon is not going anywhere.

“I spoke to Simon at the beginning of the season and I said I wanted to see what happened in the first three months and then we would review it.”

“At the moment he is certainly not one who is on the list to go on loan.

“But maybe at the end of October we will have a look at things and possibly review it.”

On Wood’s move, Di Matteo added: “Chris needs to play football to become a better player, that’s all.

“He’s good, he’s young, he’s talented, so we want to see how he progresses.

“We know he has ability but we can see how much ability he has when he played regularly for a team.”

Good decision gaffer. I watched Simon’s goal against Man.City a couple of times and the way he brushed aside two powerful defenders was top class, using his chest to propel the ball past them too before hammering a daisy-cutter into the goal. He puts himself about as much as Mulumbu, very different style of course, but different ingredients makes for a toothsome whole. If this kid emerges full blown, we shall all be delighted!

I’m glad to hear that Coxy might be staying. For me he’s our 3rd choice striker. I know that may be a little contraversial, but it’s not meant as an attack on Miller or Bednar. They just seem to be injured a lot and Miller needs time to fully recover to his best. Bednar is usefull and I really like him but he has dips in form in this league and Chelsea exposed him in the first game. But he is a battering ram at times and so can offer something that the others can’t.

Coxy is tenacious, quick and has a very good shot on him. His goal ratio spaeks for itself really. I really think he should be given more opportunities.

As for Moore, I’ve said it before, I hope he does really well at Derby and salvages his career with them. Wood will doubtlessly shine in Barnsley colours and again I really hope he finds his scoring boots so we can benefit from a big powerhouse option up front next season.

Now there is no mention of it in this story but the Brum Mail says that Zuivi could be loaned out if Mattock and Cech recover from injury! This must be a pile of the proverbial because they don’t cover the same postitions. Also if Mattock recovers I’d send him out, not Zuivi. Zuivi still looks a threat going forward and his defensive play is better than Mattocks to boot. If any one could do with a confidence boosting loan then Mattock is the man. At the risk of sounding a bit new age, he needs to go and find himself if he’s going to deliver on the promising player we bought him from the foxes to become.

We’ve been saying how proud we are of the stength in depth of our squad, but that won’t be the case if we loan out all our competative back up players, and for me Zuivi and Cox slot perfectly into that catagory. I think JtH said that Zuivi might even be converted into a striker. I don’t know how serious you were Jack but I think it might just work. He can also play in midfield if needed.

Certainly can’t let Coxy out, the way he’s playing as he’s coming on leaps and bounds.
Glad to see Moores got fixed up and out of the way.
Chris Woods loan will do him good as he’s a youngster and needs regular action.

    Baggieinmanc,
I was dead serious about converting Gianni Zuiverloon into a striker. He has pace a thunderous shot and awareness. Give him the training and see how he does. Afterall Brunt
and Cox have been playing deeper at times and
broadened their games. It’s done them no harm.
