Arsenal 2 Albion 3
Saturday 25th September 2010, 5:10PM BST.
Albion pulled off their greatest ever Premier League win as three second-half goals stunned Arsenal.
Peter Odemwingie, Gonzalo Jara and Jerome Thomas struck in the space of 24 magical minutes in the second-half to give the Baggies a stunning victory at the Emirates Stadium.
It was no more than they deserved and they should have led 1-0 at half-time, with Manuel Almunia in the Arsenal goal saving a weak penalty from Chris Brunt.
But the Baggies left their hosts shell-shocked with an onslaught after the break, taking a 3-0 lead before Samir Nasri handed the Gunners hope with a 75th-minute consolation strike.
Nasri scored again in stoppage time to set up a nervous end to the game but the Baggies held on.
It was Albion’s first win at Arsenal since 1983 and their first ever away win in the Premier League against one of the division’s established ‘big four.’
Albion made a bright start with Jerome Thomas making a jinking run down the left and Chris Brunt bursting with purpose down the right.
But neither move brought a chance and the Baggies were soon under pressure and riding their luck as Arsenal hit the woodwork.
A cross from Emmanuel Eboue found Andrei Arshavin at the far post and the Russian’s flick deflected off Chris Brunt and hit the upright.
Brunt then made a crucial block to deflect Arshavin’s follow-up.
The Baggies had to weather a significant spell of Arsenal pressure after that, with Samir Nasri dictating play from the Gunners’ midfield.
But Albion were handed a glorious chance to snatch the lead on 37 minutes, when Brunt’s threaded through-ball found Odemwingie, who was sent flying by Almunia just inside the box.
Referee Michael Oliver pointed straight to the spot and booked Almunia, but Brunt’s tame penalty was saved by the goalkeeper to his right.
Albion should have led at the break but they were in a shock 2-0 lead within seven minutes of the restart.
First Arsenal old-boy Thomas skinned Bacary Sagna on the Arsenal right, cut into the box and pulled the ball back for the unmarked Odemwingie to slide the ball home.
That sent the travelling Baggies fans into raptures and they were still pinching themselves when it got even better less than three minutes later.
A clever backheel by Brunt was too good for Gael Clichy and it sent Jara clear into the box.
His shot at the near post should still have been dealt with by Almunia, but the goalkeeper made a complete hash of his attempted save and the ball squirmed in.
A nervous finish looked in store with the Gunners piling pressure on the Baggies goal.
But, almost unbelievably, the Baggies put clear daylight between themselves and their hosts with 17 minutes to go.
Brunt beat Almunia to a Morrison through-ball, reached the byline and then turned inside to fire across the face of goal for Thomas to finish with his right foot.
But the hosts threw themselves a lifeline in the 75th minute, seconds after Nasri had rattled the crossbar after a weaving run.
Arsenal found Nasri again and his footwork took him past Jonas Olsson and allowed him to curl a shot past goalkeeper Scott Carson and inside the far post.
Albion nerves increased when the officials signalled five minutes of added time.
And, a minute into that period, Arshavin turned on the edge of the box and fed Nasri to make it 3-2.

What a great and well deserved victory. West Brom is arguably the hottest team in England (maybe the planet) at the moment and I am extremely proud of their effort since the loss at Chelsea. I watched the game here in the US and wish I could be with all of the Baggie supporters celebrating. Enjoy the win and let’s keep The Baggie Freight Train rolling. All aboard, next stop is Bolton. Obviously enjoyed the 3rd goal going in, but for me, the best bit when watching the game streamed on the web was when Tchoyi had the ball in front of the Albion fans with 85 mins on clock and 3-0 up just more or less standing still with an Arsenal defender trying in vain to get the ball off him, the defender got frustrated and pulled Tchoyi to the ground with the Albion fans in the background noisely laughing and cheering the award of the free-kick – Class!
Just loved what that one moment represented in terms of how far we have come as a team!

I think that JEREMY PEACE should be a contented man at the moment and I would like to thank him for giving us the best result for many years and for making us fans feel very proud of our club and enjoying life at the moment. It was he that unexpectedly appointed Di Matteo and promoted Dan Ashworth so the Chairman has to take great credit. Our club is in safe hands. Oh, and by the way, I’m now even more convinced that Nicky Shorey is the best left back we’ve had since Derek Statham!!!!
Are the great times we had under Ron Atkinson returning? I hope so.

My computer picture was everywhichway for 20 minutes, but eventually we got there via Sopcast. Wished I’d started there as it was so good years ago. My finger nails are no more, but wasn’t it just worth it? We shall be watched more carefully now by the opposition but somehow, I don’t think that will matter too much as long as they play fair. I said a few posts back, we are seeing the re-emergence of West Bromwich Albion. We must now close ranks at the top and keep this managing, coaching, playing staff together, regardless of who comes hunting. The team spirit is superb, they work, tackle and fight for each other in a way I haven’t seen in YEARS! The subs can’t wait to get on to show their input. I am aglow with optimism.

Fantastic result – A marvelous all round team performance. Mulumbu was incredible again. Nice to see Wenger take defeat so gracefully. Did he shake RDM’s hand? I didnt see him! Is this the most complete Baggies side since Statham, Batson Wile, Robertson, Cunningham, Robson, Regis etc? We showed on Wednesday that we have strength in depth by competing against City’s ‘Champions League Squad’ maybe’s, Millner and De-Silva alone were £50M+ subs called into the fray.
Will the pundits start to give us some respect now? Will they F**k! As per (sbaggieboy) above, lets see what the MoD ‘experts’ say. How bad Arsenal were? missing top players? hit the woodwork? The hi-lights will be trimmed to show a very lucky Baggies win no doubt, with all the play going the Gunners way. That is what we have come to expect from the One-Eyed Cockney led media.
Who cares. Lets keep levelled, our feet on the ground. It’s a marathon not a 100 meters. Keep the Baggies train rolling; fill those empty seats at the Hawthorns. Lets force them to take notice !!

Only thing I’m thinking of now, although early days is if it continues, don’t condemn me, but how long before someone comes searching and knocking on the door for RDM.
Is he fully commited and could we hold onto him.
Hope I’m barking up the wrong tree, just being realistic, because over the years I’ve witnessed too often things being ripped apart in an instant.WORRIED.

Fantastic result. I was watching the game at home in Brisbane on my tele. I was dancing on my sofa at 3 nil and always expecting the Arsenal to come back and win. The manner of the win was as good as the result. Albion play efficiently like Germany, very much like Germany. So organized and Arsenal were in disarray. This was no fluke Albion took the game to the gunners and duly rewarded. Albion have been playing well since the Sunderland game. If West Brom keep this up which I think is going to happen. Then we will have problems hanging onto RDM and the top performers in the team. That is the only downside. Jeremy Peace needs to do what he can to protect the clubs assets and not lose them cheaply to bigger clubs.

Another excellent and spirited perfomance by the boys against one of the Prems leading teams.
We passed the ball confidently and used the full width of the pitch with clever overlapping wing play which is proving to be an assett. Thomas has really come into devastating form and works really well with Brunt. Not forgetting Jimmy Morrison who huffs and puffs but always finds delicate and clever passes contributes to a midfield that is just superb and can only see it getting better as time goes by.
I was lucky to go and what an atmosphere it was.

Just enjoy this week and bring on Bolton, keep up the excellent work and we can carry this momentum. Hopefuly we can win the next home game to make this day even more special and it will justify this result. Bolton will be a team in the bottom half so its important to follow up with another 3 points at home to make the Arsenal victory and the 3 points extra valuable.

Fantastic result lads, so proud to be a Baggie at the moment. This wasn’t a smash and grab, 1-0 fortunate victory, we scored 3 goals and missed a penalty at the Emirates.
This is as good a squad as I can remember at the Albion. The team of the late 70′s was superb but didn’t have the strength in depth of this squad. When you consider the three teams we’ve beaten in the last 7 days, and truly beaten, it really is outstanding.
I realize it’s a marathon not a sprint, but credit where credit is due. JP, DA, RDM and his coaching staff, the players, the scouting network, everyone behind the scenes, take a bow.
PS if we do beat Bolton next Saturday and other results go our way, which is not unrealistic looking at the fixtures, we can go 2nd in the Premiership….. I’m in never, never land surely.

This week must have been a Dynasty dream sequece or something along those lines. WELL DONE BOYS! I’m the proudest I’ve been to be a Baggie for a very long time (apart from winning the Championship, I was pretty chuffed then).
I’ve said it before, this is looking to be the best vintage since the early 80s and RDM is surely going on to great things as a manager. I hope he sticks with us for a couple of seasons before he inevitably moves on. If he can plant us in the middle of this table then the future of the club will be bright.
MOTD were very complimetory of us last night. Shearer in particular. Hansen begrudgingly admitted we might stay up and Gary was the legend he always is.
Johnathan Pearce on the other hand was a fat jowely cod piece and I’m glad his footballing ‘knowledge’ got a severe kick in the jublies yesterday. His commentry on MOTD was so bias he may as well have been shouting ‘come on Arsenal’ down the mike. The man is a turd.
Pay no attention to him Baggies. You played incredible football yesterday which again stopped the opposition playing thier game. We shouldn’t get carried away. We could quite easily be brought down to earth by a decent Bolton side next week but sweet child o mine, that was a stonker!
Boing and proud to Boing once more.

Just back from London with a very thick head. What….a…..day!!! Every single one of them was magnificent and worked their socks off.
A few Albion in the Wetherspoons after the game, we were all stood around, nobody knew what to say, we were all shellshocked!!
Fair play to the Wulfies for giving us some credit, and to Shearer on MOTD, Le Tiss on Sky and Wenger, who apparently praised us more than was shown in his short TV interviews.
We’ve got to keep our feet on the ground though, best result last season (Boro) was followed by a slump. Losing to Bolton would take away the shine. Also, whilst 10 points is fantastic, there aren’t any teams who’ve stood out as relegation fodder so far, so we’re no more than 5/6 points clear of West Ham, Wolves, B’pool, Newcastle, Wigan etc. Keep our head’s down, working hard and the rest will look after itself.
Final point to echo what’s gone above- the secret’s out now. RDM, Mulumbu, Jara, Thomas…..they’ll be much sought after now, lets keep them happy and keep building. Well done JP and DA.
Boing boing. A very happy Baggie!!

What can I say. Always proud to have been a baggie since watching Robson, Regis, Statham, Wile, Godden and others as a young boy.
Our greatest away day for many a year at this level, since the 5-3 at old trafford perhaps. This win has brought me tears of joy. This is what makes being a football fan worthwhile.
It’s been many a year coming but at last this year we look like we can cast the yo-yo shackles off and make the rest of this league take notice we are here to stay awhile yet! There is a long way still to go and we need to realise that winning at the Emirates is not the goal for the season but achieving a top 17 position is the requirement. Hope Roberto was at the Reebok today plotting for our next two premier league wins ;).
If all four of the local teams can stay up and make an impression then perhaps just maybe we can give the London based media a poke in the eye and they will have to give credit where it’s due. But the longer they keep writing us off the more points we will collect.
Also a good draw in the Carling Cup at Leicester. I may be wrong but we haven’t lost at the Walkers stadium have we?
The futures bright the futures blue and white.

How is he going to get them back, feet on the ground ready for Bolton, who, make no mistake, will also be flying after their draw with Man.U. ? Although the whole team were superb on Saturday I think special mention must be made of Mulumbu who is quickly reaching the standard of his mentor Makele. Wenger must also be regretting his decision to release Jerome Thomas who made the Arsenal defence look very ordinary on Saturday.

40, ERIO, care to tell us how many years since Wolves won at Arsenal? clue (as you seem clueless): its more than 27 years ! Why not join your more intelligent fellow Wolves fans and congratulate us on a great result instead of making yourself look bitter and stupid.

I can only echo everything that everone has said, however if Ronaldo or Rooney etc would of produced the ‘back heel’ that put Jara thru’ for the second goal we would of seen it a thousand times & all the pundits would be waxing lyrical about ‘World Class’. Give Chris Brunt some credit for a piece of genius!!

Looks like Bolton going to be a sell out, rang at 9am to try and get two seats in SME, only had singles, so BRE for me, and not many of those left, cant wait.

What a performance, what a weekend. Like everyone else I didn’t want to leave. So proud of the lads, we were brilliant for the whole 95 minutes. Well done to the fans too; I brought a French mate over for the game and he said he had never experienced anything like the atmosphere we generated. What an afternoon.
One little gripe; don’t know if anyone gets the Observer on Sunday, but Terry Wills, bless ‘im, was the Albion fan asked to give a little report and mark the players out of 10. He gave Jara the top mark of 8, which to me is still a bit stingy, but he gave Brunty 5! OK, he missed the pen, but it was his block that prevented them going one up, and he created two of our goals, one of them with an absolutely classic backheel. So Terry, if you’re reading, stop doing the Observer reports or people will think we don’t know our football.
Proud to be a Baggie.

Paris Baggie
Interesting to read the bit about the Observer. The big thing for me about Brunty is his defensive work recently.
In the first half he deflected Arshavin’s effort off the post, but the big thing is he occupies those sorts of positions when his full-back’s been drawn across. He made a similar clearance off a corner in the first half and our second-half improvement against Spurs came about once Brunty moved to the right and gave a bit more protection to Jara against Bale.
He’s always been an asset when we’ve had the ball but at the moment under RDM he’s an asset when we lose it. 5 out of 10′s ridiculous in my opinion. Well done Brunty and RDM/coaching staff.

P.S.
In fact, Terry Wills if you are reading, it’d be interesting to know how Mulumbu warranted a 6 (he was everywhere!!) and Olsson, Ibanez and Thomas’s performance only a 7???
Perhaps this was your way of staying grounded and telling the world that this was no fluke result, but I think you’ve been insulting to the workrate, application, determination and organisation of some of our players there.

Lets take a moment to look at the structure of the football club, and how we veiw The Chairman and the Board of Directors. It shows how fickle we all can be. The latest approach of breaking the wage structure whilst not paying huge transfer fees, is paying dividends, and we have swept any doubts about them away for the time being.
The same applies to the Rainbow (Geoffrey Bia /Zippy Moxey/ George Elokobi/ Bungle MaCarthey) lot down the road, who have forgotten that prior to their honeymoon period last year now things arn’t quite as rosy, with 4 top 4 fixtures to come, i expect the postings to be requesting McCarthey Out.
So Beware RDM, but let’s enjoy it while we can.
Well done to everyone at the footbal club.

Did you see Brunt’s face when he missed the penalty? He was gutted, but the other lads consoled him best they could even during the game. He’ll never ‘tap’ another one I’ll bet. Far better to smash it, and he can, in Bomber Brown style. Chris Brunt is gradually becoming a great player. He’ll play wherever he’s asked to, learns quickly and does whatever job he’s supposed to do. One of the first on my team sheet every time as I’ve said before. If you want some real marks out of ten, the local Sunday paper was more like it. Maybe Terry Wills was having a ‘Kind to Cockneys Day’ as gloating isn’t a nice characteristic.

No.109Barnes59. I’m not sure that “It shows how fickle we all can be” is fair my friend. There are those of us who have NOT criticised the Chairman, the Board, the Coaching Staff, the Players, the Team, in fact have been mightily supportive of all things Baggies. In my case, I have moaned about the PA system, now much more acceptable thanks to Dan The Man and the stadium clock, visible only at night when all the lights are out. In fact, it would be lovely to have a PROPER round clock, a big un, sitting on the Throstle we salvaged from the old Woodman Corner. Kev in Mallorca did advise me to buy a watch, but I like icons, especially the West Brom Thrush.
If things progress as well as they are doing, then I’d dangle a Directorship at Roberto to keep him, come what may, because we don’t want another 1981 and on downward slide when the club was torn apart by Man.U.

Warren and Cyril: couldn’t agree more. Brunt is working his socks off and has confirmed what we knew from our last season in the Premier, ie that he is Premier class. The one thing that used to frustrate me about him was his inability/reluctance to take on a full back, but now we have other wide players to do that job (eg Thomas who has been brilliant), it allows Brunty to focus on what he’s best at.
Warren: I’d forgotten old Terry only gave 6 to Mulumbu. Ridiculous. He is one of the reasons we look more at home than we did under Mowbray. All of them deserve 10s anyway.

Remember it was TM who brought Mulumbu to the Albion, I wonder if he had been fit for the whole of the season would it have made a difference to the outcome?

This is the best win I can remember in all my time supporting the Albion. We’ve had a rollercoaster ride here at the Albion, a humiliating cup defeat to Mr Buzaglow and Woking, the pain of relegation to the 3rd Division in Bath made me cry in despair.
Managers and players walking out, avoiding relegation by the skin of our teeth season after season. All that makes a result like this all the more sweeter. For 95 magical minutes on Saturday, I was in heaven.
Keep it going now boys, Bolton on Saturday, lets raise the roof!!

Wallheath. Too true, but sometimes you are doing a great construction job and the satisfaction is to be had, especially if he keeps it going, gets settled, climbs the tree with us, then …well I can hope !
Bodmin. Mulumbu is a gem, agreed, but it’s showing more now as his experience has increased and in my view, the coaching is superior.
