Boaz Myhill is up for the cup

Goalkeeper Boaz Myhill today challenged Albion’s fringe players to make an impact when they take on super-rich Manchester City in the Carling Cup tonight.

The former Hull shot-stopper is expected to take over from Scott Carson between the sticks at The Hawthorns as Roberto Di Matteo rings the changes.

And Myhill, who is yet to make his Premier League debut for the Baggies, believes the cup clash is a chance for the second string to remind Di Matteo of their talents.

“Obviously every player wants to play and this is a platform for me to show what I can do,” said the summer signing.

“I am at a club where there are a couple of other good goalkeepers in Dean Kiely and Scott Carson and I knew that when I came here.

“My aim is to show what I can do over a long period of time and the rest is up to the manager.

“As a club it can only be beneficial to have a good goalkeeping department and I am sure the manager will be delighted if he doesn’t have to change the goalkeeping position all season.

“That’s the nature of football and the challenge for me is to remain consistent in training and show what I can do.

“This is a good fixture for the boys who haven’t been playing regularly.”

“It’s a Premier League fixture for us and it’s a club who could put out four good Premier League sides, so whatever team they put out will be tough opposition.”

City are also expected to make changes from their Premier League line-up when they head to The Hawthorns just three days before taking on Chelsea in league action.

But Myhill still expects a tough examination.

He said: “Manchester City will, whatever side they put out, have players who think they should be playing for Manchester City’s first team and want to show it.

“That is the challenge for us, to match that and hopefully get a positive result.

“We’re under no illusions that whatever team they put out will be a good side.

“But it’s down to us as the home team to show what we can do and hopefully we can cause them some problems.”
