Albion 2 Manchester City 1

Albion scored twice in three minutes to dump big-spending Manchester City out of the Carling Cup in a pulsating clash at the Hawthorns.

Gianni Zuiverloon and Simon Cox struck the Baggies goals, as Roberto Di Matteo’s second string dominated their visitors throughout the match to fully justify their win.

But they had to fight back from 1-0 down after Jo’s brilliant first-half finish gave Roberto Mancini’s much-changed side a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Jo blasted City in front on 19 minutes against the run of play with a crisp first-time finish, after Abdoulaye Meite and Zuiverloon had failed to deal with a high ball.

But Albion held the upper hand and recalled City goalkeeper Shay Given had to make three fine saves to deny the home side, who also saw Cox and Roman Bednar miss excellent chances.

The Baggies drew level when Zuiverloon got the benefit of the doubt following a apparent shove and made no mistake with a crisp low shot that nestled into the bottom corner.

Then Cox then played a neat one-two with Bednar before finishing with precision to put the Baggies in front.

City pressed for an equaliser but Albion held firm, with goalkeeper Boaz Myhill pulling off a smart low save from James Milner.

Great result for our reserves the Shrine is starting to become a fortress, teams now know that they are in for a tough game when they visit the hawthorns. Well done to RDM and his backroom staff the whole squad seem to be very comfortable with each other and RDM,S tactics. Keep up the good work lads, i for one am very proud to be a Baggie at the moment..

    Roberto,
Have you got an office door left, after all the players who are not in the team are knocking hell out of it?. How ALBION didn’t win eight- one or more I’ll never know. First half we absolutely ran MANCHESTER CITY ragged.
Tchoyi was blistering down the left, Ibanez rock solid in the middle. Zuiverloon should be converted into a striker. Cox did a great job olso helped out a the back. Dorrans and
Shorey top quality. For all the others I haven’t mentioned, us BAGGIES are realy proud of your fighting spirit and never say die attitude. Thank you for yet another great nights entertaining football against some of
the Premierships big guns. Again thank you Roberto.

How did we go in 1-0 down after that first half display????

Ten changes and we dominated the game. We now have a squad instead of a team.

Shorey and Dorrans were superb. Pablo looked very assured and impressive. Tchoyi was a handful all night but most of all it was another very good performance from the whole team. They worked hard for each other and showed great spirit.

Well done to the fans that turned up for making it sound as if there were a lot more than there were.

Fantastic result and with a second string side also. Man City, although they also fielded a second string side, they still had 11 players that would walk into most Premiership sides.

This will also give us much needed confidence ahead of the weekend.

    We only need one half!

Just back from the game, what a performance, we have REALLY arrived when our second team can put in a shift like that, I can not think of one area where we did not have the better player, and to be fair, if it was not for Given we could have been 4-1 up come half time, but, like my name says, we only need one half, and we didn’t even need a plan B this time. Man City, £118 million summer spending, your having a laff!!!!

An excellent game, two well-matched teams giving it everything and we deservedly came out on top. Albion’s passing was of a level which augurs well for the future. I was delighted to see Cox score a good goal, plus a really excellent shot well saved. Our new left winger was a nightmare for City, getting some heavy ‘treatment’ at times. Barnes too played well. In fact, who didn’t play well?

    Excellent display from the boys.

Dorrans looked back to his best.
Somen has a bit of everything to his game. Power, Pace, Skill etc. Could be one of our best signings.
Reid did really well in the middle with Viera around (and still a threat).
Barnes seemed a bit more confident, maybe he knew he was going to play the full 90.
Pablo looked solid and will settle into the English game.

Everybody put a shift in so well done the Baggies.

Our ability to come from behind and get something could be the big difference this time around.

Now lets see what Aresnal have got!

Then there is Mancini who says the carling Cup was NOT a priority for the club – despite not winning anything since 1977 and spending all that cash.

On a different note, did anyone watch……you`re on sky sports last night ?

It featured “expert” Graham Stuart, ex Charlton, Everton etc.

Talk was about Arsenal, and Stuart suggested that the West Brom`s and Wolves`s of this world game plan is to go to the Emirates and be physical and shut up shop.

Now i have a few problems with those comments.

A TV expert/pundit should have a modicum of knowlege of the teams of which he speaks.
Clearly Stuart has not the slightest comprehension of what the Albion are about, and to suggest that we are an attritioal team is both wrong and insulting.

And WHY OH WHY do these people pluralize teams, the West Brom`s of this world, the Chealsea`s of this world et-al. It`s ridiculous.

Stuart even managed to pluralize a pluralism when he called Wolves…..Wolves`s

I’m still longing to know if Liverpool has been dragged out to sea and sunk by irate fans.
The intellectual and adult behaviour of fans can be measured in their ability to absorb defeat. It hurts of course, but we swallow hard and live to play another day. That’s why I’m ALWAYS proud to be a Baggie. We grew up early last century and haven’t degenerated, even in our darkest 3rd Division days.

It was bad enough listening to those chumps on MOTD who were totally unable to offer any praise to the Albion but were gushing about the Blues who they now percieve as “established”… despite having just watched us out play them and spank them 3-1.

There is a definate “us and them” attitude amongst pundits – the “big 4″ should never be challenged, promoted teams should be grateful for the chance to play at big grounds and woe betide any upstarts who think they can actually win a few games.

It will make any success we have this year that much sweeter !!

    30 Forever.

Very true. This is lazy punditry. They seem to think that because someone has played football he must be an expert and we should all listen to them

On Talksport Stan Collymore(who often talks a load of ballcocks himself) has had a go at the MOTD ‘experts,’ over there lack of basic knowledege. The other night talking about Newcastle’s Ben Arfa one of them said ‘I don’t know much about him.’ He’s not some unknown from the French second division and even if he was it’s their job to know something about him, they are being paid to be experts and to inform us. Talksport often interviews ex players (mainly Liverpool or Arsenal) and they invariably come over as the badly informed bloke from the pub who has caught the end of MOTD and knows it all.

I agree about the ‘West Broms.’ You can add to that list the Blackpools, the Boltons and the Blackburns. The Fulhams and West Hams don’t come into it because they’re London clubs and therefore naturally superior. As Happy says the Villas and Evertons are established PL clubs and obviously wouldn’t dream of kicking Arsenal. While for some reason the Newcastles and Sunderlands always remain a part of the in crowd because with Smith, Nolan Cattermole and Barton they are comprised almost entirely of choirboys.

Sorry attempt at a sarcastic rant over.

Tell me about it!! I gave up yesterday then naively got dragged back into it last night when he called the Notts County fan a cretin for no reason!!

    Forever, TRBH

I think in some ways it’s symptomatic of the job they do in that they are asked to give an informed opinion on 20 teams, when it’s only possible for them to have seen 5 or 6 that day.

Steve Claridge makes me chuckle on the Football League Show trying to give an in-depth tactical analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of 72 clubs. The net result of this of course is these summaries are invariably inaccurate- Graham Dorrans being left out of his Championship team of the year!! I read somewhere that Claridge was spotted in the press box at the Hawthorns once last season, yet spent 6 months telling everybody on the show how weak we were defensively.

However in a way, the longer we remain ‘the West Brom’s’ of the world to Hansen and Lawro et al, it’s to our advantage. Birmingham are probably finding out now, that being ‘established’ has it’s pitfalls. Whilst it’s frustrating in some ways, if it means we keep our better players longer and surprise a few teams, long may it continue.

So now RDM has to make a pretty impossible decision. Tchoyi, Brunt or Thomas? Who gets dropped? To be honest I would like to see any combination of the three but I definately want Tchoyi to be given a run out against Arsenal. They are amazing footballers but would they be able to match him physically? Not to forget that Thomas would probably be quite keen to have a pop at his old club and Brunty is on fire at the moment. Like I said toughy.

The pundits aren’t giving the Baggies or lets not forget Blackpool thier dues because they don’t want to have to learn about the promoted teams because it’s more work. Thats why the puditry seems lazy, because it is. They saw Newcastle, Albion and Blackpool come up and decided the latter two would go down along with Wigan because Newcastle are too big to predict relegation, West Ham are a London side and so can’t possibly be relegated (even if they cheat) even though they were the worst side to survive last time, so Wigan are the obvious choice. Lazy. They hate it when promoted teams get in amongst the pack because they actually have to research them. Well hopefully the Baggies will have em cramming every Sunday. Once they know all the players names we can look forward to losing 3-1 to a promoted side and have Lawro explain in his annoying squeeky tone that we are an ‘established side’. I thought we were established in 1878 a good 20 years before his beloved Liverpool.
