Albion to shuffle pack for cup tie

Albion will shuffle their pack again tomorrow when they resume their Carling Cup campaign against moneybags Manchester City at the Hawthorns.

Several of the Baggies’ fringe players could be handed rare starts in the third round clash, despite possible loan deals out of the club in the next week.

The likes of Gianni Zuiverloon, Chris Wood and Simon Cox, who are all interesting Championship clubs, will all come into contention.

First team coach Michael Appleton said: “You can expect changes. I don’t think there will be as many as there were against Leyton Orient in the last round.

“But it’s an opportunity for the manager to use his squad and it’s another opportunity for the lads that played at Leyton Orient to stake a claim.”

Key midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu is unlikely to start against City, but has been given the all-clear despite appearing to pick up an injury against Birmingham on Saturday.

Appleton said: “He’s fine. There are a couple of lads with bruises because, with it being a derby, there was a bit more in it than some of the other games.

“Youssouf has no problem really – it was more of a tactical change.”

Joe Mattock is also unlikely to play tomorrow despite stepping up his comeback from an ankle problem.

Appleton added: “The problem with Joe at the minute is that he’s not had a full day’s training.

“It will be too soon for him.”

Teenage midfielder Sam Mantom could also get another chance in the third round after starting the second-round victory at Leyton Orient.

Appleton said: “Sam’s a lad who has come in a bit later than some of the boys we’ve seen in the past.

“He was always going to be a late developer, whereas some of the lads were physically able to deal with aspects of the game earlier.

“Sam is one where we knew he could kick on a little bit this season or next.

“Whether he starts the game tomorrow, or is involved, the manager will decide that.

“But in training and reserve-team games he has been first class and is improving all the time.”

I touched on this in the other article but a year ago we lost a Carling Cup game at this stage, Thomas got suspended and we lost a bit of rhythm. I’d be happy for us to field an under-strength side but just hope we come out of this unscathed, including Shorey who looks as though he’ll have to play.

A slightly different issue, but does anybody know anything about the away allocations we keep getting? 1,500 at Arsenal and 1,800 at Manchester United. The standard away allocations for both of these places is 3,000.

I understand Chelsea tickets were slow to sell, but it was £50, holiday season and on TV. Last season we had 5,000 at Arsenal for a midweek game in the cup and always sell out much bigger allocations for there and Old Trafford than those we’ve got this time around.

If the Albion are asking for smaller allocations, then I think it’s a shame as they’re cheating our supporters really.

Warren i think the reason is that if the club take the full allocation and dont sell them they have to pay for the unsold tickets,so if arsenal offer us 1500 and we only sell 1400 we can send 100 back without having to pay, considering we only have 800 away season ticket holders and the price of the tickets i dont think JP is prepared to gamble, aye boing boing

I agree Warren, the same thing seems to be happening with us simply because we had a few tickets not sold at Everton, we then had much smaller allocations at Fulham and Spurs. I think the same happened to Newcastle when they came to the Mol.

I can only assume you’re unfamiliar with the idea of playing a second string since you don’t have one. Was it only 20 players registered???

Anyway, I’m sure the extra gametime will give your players a chance to compete between themselves for the end-of-season move to Manchester City……….

It just strikes me that it’s not a gamble with Arsenal and Man U as we’d have sold out both. I’m sure JP appreciate the extra pennies though!!

Wigan must spend a fortune sending back their allocations!!!

Forget that bit about Wigan, I’ve just realised what you meant Terry, you only have to pay for the unsold larger allocation!! The penny dropped, five minutes later….

Cheers Malvern, it seems a bit harsh when both of us will take upwards of 2-3,000 to a lot of Championship away games that a few hundred of those miss out on the biggies. Still, if we keep playing as we are they can always go next year!!

Bit of a funny one tonight. Warren mentioned earlier that it can be a nuisance with injuries, suspensions etc. But the other side is that it gives the players who’ve been out of the First XI a chance to have a run out and make their case for inclusion.

We have to get used to the fact that wer now have a squad and the more games we play the easier it is to keep them happy. It also allows the promising youngsters like Sam Manton to make his case.

The only thing that worries me is that if and I know it’s a big IF we beat them tonight the law of averages says we’re less likely to get a good result when we play them in the league in a few weeks.

Either way, once the ref blows his whistle I know I’ll be screaming for a win, it’s what we do isn’t it?

With that team it would leave us with the likes of Shorey,Olsson,Morrison,Scharner,

Whatever happens tonight, and despite being at home,Albion must go into the game as underdogs. It’s all very well for Man.City to spend an absolute fortune on their squad, but this creates a potential backlash. The situation is clear-when you bring in players from around the world costing literally hundreds of millions, you HAVE to succeed.Every game that City play should be seen as a MUST WIN,anything short of victory has to go down as failure, there are no excuses. This being the case, all the pressure is on them,an Albion win, with whatever line-up,would be a bonus, and if it happens,I for one will be grinning like a cheshire cat.

I cannot believe that some of our supporters have gone on the Dingles pages and tried to ‘stick up’ for Lee Hughes after everything he has done. He wore a t-shirt to whind up their supporters when he should be keeping a low profile and thanking his lucky stars he is not in a prison cell and football has given him another chance. How do you think the family involved with the ‘incident’ will feel to see him on the news this morning causing trouble? A discrace.

It’s not a case of condoning what Hughes did, Bully’s done it to us enough times. It’s more him being blamed for what happened after the game.

The fella who chucked that brick through the official supporters club coach window could’ve killed someone, like Hughes when he got into his car that night. Only circumstances and fate decide whether they do kill someone or not.

Someone flashing a t-shirt at a football match after being goaded for an hour is some way below any of the aforementioned, and I think it’s wrong to link the two incidents or blame one on the other.

For the record, I’m not a big Hughes fan, I thought it cheap and shallow the way he left his ‘beloved’ to double his wages at Coventry. But there’s a huge blame and persecute culture in this country and some won’t be happy until he’s in a dungeon, begging for mercy, chained to the wall whilst being pelted with tomatoes.

The man made a mistake and served his time, lets move on. The Wolves fans last night should also be made to take some responsibility for their actions.

To tonight, anything but extra-time please….

What happened to Lee Hughes was typical of so many young footballers these days. A nice young bloke, a bit daft but suddenly he’s got money to burn and lots of nice new mates to lead him astray since becoming rich.
Players are so detached from the real world now that I’m sure he won’t be the last that this sort of thing happens to.
Money is ruining football in so many different ways.

Sod the Hughes tee shirt and his ‘dance’ when he scores. NOTHING can excuse those thugs wrecking coaches, sending people to hospital, terrifying little children. They should, where possible be hunted down and jailed with hard labour for at least a year. What security let a man in with a flare? Did you hear the morons on at Hughes even before they kicked off?
How do the decent Wolves supporters deal with this stuff. They must be squirming with embarrassment. I think of people like Filton at a time like this. This is his club too.
Folks living opposite always raise a huge flag when the Wulfies win. It’s not up there today. Says it all from decent folk. Bert Williams must be ashamed of them.

I remember when Albion played wolves back in the mid 90′s (forget the particular season),at molineux the Albion fans were held back at the end for their own protection, wolves fans were throwing missiles including house bricks at them.In the return fixture at the Hawthorns, the rebuilt Smethwick End was vandalised by wolves fans smashing up seats and toilets. There are hooligans at every club, but judging by last night’s events, maybe some of the wolves fans should stop laying all the blame on a player taking off his shirt, and look at the broader, more disturbing picture. The image of wolves nationwide is probably at a very low point,so they really need to get their house in order.

I’ve only just found out about what went on at Wolves last night.

It re-iterates what I said about Lee Hughes being daft and perhaps a little immature. The goal itself would have been the best reply to the goading.

What I really wanted to say was that it wasn’t WWFC moronic thugs that did this, it was moronic thugs. There are probably some at most clubs, they are not football hooligans, they are hooligans that go to football matches. 99.9% of Wolves and Albion supporters are decent people. The idiots tag onto our clubs and what Lee Hughes did in no way excuses these actions.

It brings back someone saying last week that all Albion fans should hate Wolves. No, no, no. Hate is a strong word. It’s what fuels the problem, it’s what these neanderthals use as an excuse to attack others because of who they support.

All right minded fans whoever they support should condemn these idiots. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR DOING THIS.

Maybe know names too, but are scared to come forward because today we have protection for the thug above the protection of the victim. We need the Police to guarantee them anonymity, evidence behind locked doors. Who knows, they may not even have been to the game.
