Walsall transfer news: Jon Whitney admits interest in Southend's Franck Moussa

Walsall boss Jon Whitney has admitted his interest in signing Belgian midfielder Franck Moussa.

The 26-year-old, who ended last season with Southend, is available on a free transfer but has been offered a two-year deal to remain with the Shrimpers.

An attacking midfielder, Moussa began his career at Anderlecht before joining Southend for first spell in 2006. He then enjoyed a successful two years at Coventry before moving onto Charlton where injury problems restricted him to just 23 appearances. "Franck Moussa is a player I have spoken to but I have spoken to several," Whitney said.

"He is somebody I really like and who interests me.

"He's a game changer. I think he can win games himself. If we want Franck and if Franck wants to sign for us – that is up to me and Franck to decide.

"We will probably have another chat with Franck and another three or four as well.

"A lot of players want to sign for Walsall. So I have got to make sure they are coming for the right reasons. That is why I am being patient and taking my time before I put an offer in to some of them."

Whitney – who has so far made six signings in the close season – previously said he is close to adding another two players to his squad.

But while he hoped both would arrive in the coming days, he fears the paperwork involved may see the deals drag into next week. "We are looking in the forward positions now," the boss added.

"I'm hopeful something will happen this week with one and I've got some irons in the fire for a possible loan signing as well.

"It's a case of watch of this space at the moment. I want players who really want to play for Walsall. I don't want individuals. I have been offered a lot of players, players who are technically very good.

"But if their personality doesn't fit, I can't bring them in. I want people who will buy into the team ethos."
