Walsall player exodus: Sam Mantom joins Scunthorpe

Sam Mantom has become the second player to leave Walsall today after the midfielder opted to join League One rivals Scunthorpe.

The 24-year-old has penned a three-year contract with the Iron after turning down a two-year contract extension offered by the Saddlers board last month.

Mantom, who began his career with West Brom, scored nine goals in 47 appearances for Walsall last season.

He joins Anthony Forde in departing the club today with the Irish winger have penned a three-year-deal at Championship outfit Rotherham.

The duo join Romaine Sawyers, Jason Demetriou, Paul Downing and Milan Lalkovic in rejecting new contracts offered by the Walsall hierarchy at the end of last season.

Jordan Cook and Andy Taylor are also expected to turn down deals in favour of moves elsewhere.

But boss Jon Whitney has been quick to replace some of his departing stars and has already bolstered his ranks by bringing in Erhun Oztumer, Florent Cuvelier, Joe Edwards, Jason McCarthy and George Dobson.
