The 45-year-old stepped in to replace the sacked Sean O'Driscoll back in March and guided the Saddlers to a third placed finish in League One before they suffered play-off heartbreak against Barnsley.

Whitney is expected to be appointed permanent boss at the Banks's Stadium but could also be moved to a head of performance role if the Walsall hierarchy look for a more experienced manager.

"My future will be decided in the next few days," Whitney said.

"I am keen to carry on if it is right for me and right for the club but I am not going to make a decision yet – I am going to keep my options open and see what happens.

"The whole experience has been fantastic and I have learnt an incredible amount. It's been a steep learning curve but it's one that I have enjoyed.

"Whether I carry on as a manager or as a performance coach – that is what I need to sit down over the next few days and look at.

"But I am proud at what I have achieved this season and believe being a head coach is well within my capabilities."
