But Jason Demetriou insists there are no nerves in the camp as they prepare for what could be a monumental day in the club's history.

The Saddlers travel to Port Vale today knowing a two-goal win together with a defeat for Burton at Doncaster would see them clinch second place in League One.

It's sure to be a nervy but enjoyable day for the 3,000 Saddlers who are making the trip to Staffordshire to roar on their team.

And while they would forgive their heroes for feeling a few nerves too, Demetriou insists all the players are just excited to take to the field.

"The boys are more excited than nervous and that is definitely a good thing," the flying full-back said.

"I've seen players be nervous in the past and freeze on the day so that excitement is going to be massive for us.

"Hopefully it will be like the Blackpool game earlier in the season.

"The fans were great that day, the sun was out and we played really well.

"It's such a massive game and we really can't wait."

Walsall know if Burton do get a result at Doncaster then they will have to make do with a place in the play-offs.

But Demetriou is determined his side will at least do their part by beating their Staffordshire rivals.

"If we win and Burton go up then we have to accept it – but we have to do our part," the 28-year-old continued.

"We know what we have got to do and the past few weeks we have found the form we showed at the start of the season.

"The shackles are off a little bit.

"Our best form of defence is attack and over the last two games we have really shown what we are about.

"The good thing is that we are prepared for the play-offs.

"The pressure is off a little bit and this week we have been ploughing it into each other – let's get this win.

"Let's get this win and see where it takes us."

With events at Keepmoat going a long way to shaping the outcome of the day, Demetriou admits it will be hard for players not to assess the mood of the crowd during the game.

"Events at Burton will seep through to the players," he said.

"With the crowd, we will be aware of it.

"It's a massive day. It's exciting for the fans.

"And a lot of the players have never experienced this excitement before.

"We have done well. What will be on Sunday will be but we are more than ready for it."

Demetriou admits he has spent time dreaming Walsall do win automatic promotion.

And after signing for the club from Cypriot outfit Anorthosis Famagusta in the summer, the defender is delighted with how his first campaign back in English football has gone.

"In my head I have dreamt about promotion," he added.

"But I have been in the game 10/12 years and I know if you expect too much you can often be disappointed.

"But I am really glad I came back to England. I had a good contract over there but I felt I needed to get back and its been excellent. To finish how we have, this excitement I haven't had for a long time."
