The 68-year-old, who famously led the Saddlers to promotion in the 2000-01 season, had been due to speak at an event at the Banks's Stadium last Friday.

'An Evening with Ray Graydon and Friends' had been organised by the Walsall Football Supporters' Trust.

But while the former Villa defender was forced to cancel on medical grounds, he has vowed to return when back to full health.

A statement from the trust read: "Ray had an operation last Wednesday, having been called up at short notice on Monday, hence the late cancellation. He had not expected the operation to be so soon.

"He is back at home but the nature of the operation means that he is having difficulty speaking and swallowing. Ray has stressed he will definitely be coming when fully fit."
