Attacker Romaine Sawyers won't be able stop thinking about Walsall despite jetting off on international duty with St Kitts & Nevis.

The creative midfielder is part of the Sugar Boys squad that is preparing to take on Aruba on Sunday and then Antigua & Barbuda next Wednesday in the Caribbean Cup.

Sawyers and his international team-mates will compete in the competition in a bid to win a place at the Gold Cup, which includes the likes of Mexico and USA.

But with the Saddlers in the thick of the League One promotion race, Sawyers feels it's going to be hard not to think about the end-of-season run-in at home.

Sawyers said: "The Caribbean Cup is the equivalent to the Euros. It's the early stages of the tournament and that will lead to the Gold Cup when the bigger countries come into it.

"While some of the lads at Walsall are enjoying a bit of a break, I'll be working. I'm looking forward to it but I think my mind is still here if I'm honest.

"No disrespect to my country but with the chance that we've got, for a club like Walsall, it's a massive thing for everyone.

"I don't think I can allow my head to drift away from that."

Sawyers was part of the Walsall team that secured a dramatic come-back victory over Colchester on Saturday - with Tom Bradshaw and Matt Preston netting twice late on to snatch the points.

He said: "If I am a Burton or Wigan player and I go and check Walsall's result and see we scored twice in the last few minutes then that is going to hurt.

"It shows the resilience we've got, that's the kind of thing you do to get promoted."

Meanwhile, Southampton are the latest club to be linked with Saddlers starlet Rico Henry. The 18-year-old has been watched by the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham this season.
