Sean O'Driscoll loyal to his Walsall players

Boss Sean O'Driscoll has revealed loyalty to his players has prevented him from making too many changes to his Walsall squad.

The promotion-chasing Saddlers have used just 21 players this season – the lowest total in League One.

But, while he would like a bigger squad, O'Driscoll believes it's not fair to sign players who arrive with clauses insisting they play.

He said: "I get phone calls from clubs offering me players all the time. They are all good players, but the clubs insist they will only go out if they are guaranteed to play.

"One of the reasons why we have done so well is because the players are a tight-knit group and everyone can play their part.

"If I bring in three players, I wouldn't be able to keep everyone happy and that would change the dynamic."

O'Driscoll has snapped up Bryn Morris and Josh Wakefield on loan from Middlesbrough and Bournemouth respectively.

Both midfielders have arrived without instructions from their parent clubs that they have to play.

And the Saddlers boss hasn't ruled out making further additions before the loan window closes on March 28.

He said: "You always want more players and bigger squads, but the important thing is to bring in the right players with the right character.

"The loan window shuts on the March 28. Then we will have some big decisions to make, knowing that we won't be able to strengthen if we get an injury.

"The closer we get to March 28, the more we will look at it."

Meanwhile, O'Driscoll revealed he hasn't wanted to risk starlet Rico Henry in recent games due to the youngster having an ankle injury.

The Walsall chief added: "He's had problems with his ankle since I've been here. We've got to be careful with him.

"He trained on Thursday, then he trained on Friday and tweaked his ankle again."
