Target Adrian Viveash, Chris Marsh tells Saddlers chiefs

Club legend Chris Marsh has called on Walsall to target Adrian Viveash as their new manager.

Marsh reckons his former Saddlers team-mate, currently boss of Chelsea's under-21s, is the ideal candidate to continue Dean Smith's work at the Banks's Stadium.

The 46-year-old, who has worked in Chelsea's academy for the past seven years, is among a host of names to be linked with the vacant post since Smith left for Brentford a little over a week ago.

And Marsh said: "If I was choosing the new manager, it would be Adi all the way.

"Whether he would leave his job at Chelsea, I suppose that is the big question.

"But he was a good player for Walsall and very popular with the fans. I think he would be the ideal candidate."

Swindon-born Viveash joined the Saddlers on a free transfer from Barnsley in 1995, went on to make 237 appearances and was part of the team which won promotion to Division One in 1999.

At Chelsea he has coached at several youth age groups, winning the UEFA Youth League with the club's under-19s in 2013 before taking charge of the under-21s at the start of last season.

"He's done a great job at every level he's been," continued Marsh. "That shows what a good coach he is."

Marsh believes David Kelly, who is now joint favourite in the betting with some bookmakers, would also make a shrewd appointment.

The former Saddlers striker is currently assistant boss at Scunthorpe, who insist there has been no formal approach.

Tottenham are meanwhile reported to have made an enquiry about Walsall's highly-rated left-back Rico Henry.

The 18-year-old has been scouted by top-flight clubs with Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City all touted as potential suitors.
