The Saddlers boss is on the Millers shortlist to replace Steve Evans, who parted company with the club last week.

In a statement, the Saddlers have confirmed a request from a Championship club to speak to Smith was "categorically rejected".

Though the club is not named, it is understood to be the Millers.

The statement reads: "In response to recent media speculation the club can confirm it received an approach from a Championship club for permission to speak to manager Dean Smith.

"This approach was categorically rejected.

"As one of the longest serving managers in the country, Dean has been instrumental in the club's progress since his appointment and is fundamental to our future plans."

Smith has been in charge at the Banks's Stadium since January 2011.

After leading the club to a first-ever Wembley appearance last season, a strong start to the current campaign sees them sit second in League One.

Rotherham, promoted from League One in 2014, are currently 21st in the Championship.
