The 27-year-old, a summer capture from Cypriot outfit Anorthosis Famagusta, has impressed throughout pre-season with his attacking play.

"I've always backed myself to get assists wherever I've played and now I need to deliver for Walsall," he said.

"I should be getting a minimum of five in a season and there is no reason why I can't get into double figures.

"It's a big part of my game getting forward and delivering crosses. And with the forward players we have got there is no reason why they shouldn't be finishing them off.

"You look at Tom Bradshaw and he's like a magnet. He always puts the ball in the net.

"But the likes of Jordan Cook, Romaine Sawyers, Milan Lalkovic – they are all good finishers. My aim will be to get forward and get quality balls into the box for them."

Demetriou has lined up as both a full-back and a wing-back over pre-season as boss Dean Smith experiments with different formations.

And the former Leyton Orient star admits the wing-back role is one he enjoys.

"For me it is perfect," he said. "I have played there before, while I was in Cyprus, and I really enjoyed it.

"I am probably better going forward than I am as a defender. But whatever formation the gaffer picks I will put an honest shift in.

"Playing wing-backs is tailor-made for me, but I think it's tailor-made for a lot of players in our squad.

"It's worked well for us throughout pre-season so now we just have to wait and see if the gaffer goes with it against for the season opener against Oldham."

Meanwhile, Walsall have not received a bye for the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy despite reaching last year's final.

The draw for the first round of this year's competition takes place on Saturday.
