Boss Dean Smith believes there were plenty of positives on show following Walsall's 1-0 win over Luton at Kenilworth Road.

A sixth minute Tom Bradshaw goal was enough to secure victory in their final pre-season friendly, before the competitive action resumes next weekend.

And Smith was largely pleased with the performance of his players as he again opted for an attacking 3-5-2 formation.

He said: "It was a test for us because Luton have got some really good players and that is exactly the type of game I wanted.

"John Still has got a really good team here but for 65 minutes I thought we were really, really good.

"We created a lot of chances but we did get a bit loose on the ball and invited them in a bit more in the last 25 minutes.

"I was disappointed with the last 25 but pleased with the first 65. As an attacking outfit we were good, we kept the ball well and camped in their half for most of the game.

"There are a lot of positives to take from the game."

Smith included centre-back Adrian Pazo in his starting line-up with the Spaniard currently on trial with the club.

The Saddlers chief said: "I thought he did OK. It was always going to be tough for him.

"Just speaking to him this week, he has never played three at the back before. It was an interesting game for him. But the system worked and he was part of it."

Meanwhile, Smith confirmed he hasn't spoken to trialist midfielder Zac Thompson since revealing he'd like to sign the player on Thursday.

He said: "I have not heard from him or his agent since Thursday. That looks like it's dead in the water. I might hear from him on the way home I don't know."
