The Saddlers chief revealed last week he was closing in on a new front man who he hoped would join up with the group in time for pre-season training.

"I've spoken with a striker but we now have to hang fire on that one," the boss said.

"It's a deal I want to get done but there is an issue with the club where the player is at now.

"It's nothing our end and it's a deal that I believed to be close.

"It's just a case of hanging by the wayside now and waiting for an update."

One player who did report for the first day of pre-season training was centre-back Paul Downing who was pleased to be back amongst his team-mates.

"It's nice to be back amongst the lads again," he said.

"I'm really looking forward to the new season.

"I think it's good that we have been able to keep the nucleus of the team together.

"The gaffer has also started to strengthen with some talented new additions, so it all bodes well."
