Walsall physio the best in League One

Walsall's Jon Whitney is celebrating after being crowned the best physio in League One.

The 44-year-old former defender is now head of the Saddlers medical department after hanging up his boots in 2001.

It came following a distinguished playing career with Huddersfield, Lincoln and Hull City.

Now an integral part of Dean Smith's backroom staff, Whitney has been honoured for his work at the Banks's Stadium.

After receiving the League One Football Medical Association Members' award, he said: "It was very pleasing to win, it's always nice to be recognised.

"It's my name on the trophy ,but I pick it up on behalf of the whole team.

"It really is a team effort and we've got some great staff here, including the interns I've had, who all work so hard for the benefit of Walsall FC.

"This is an award that has only been going for a few years but it's growing in stature all the time."
