Video: James Chambers could leave as brother Adam signs

James Chambers' Walsall career could be over after boss Dean Smith revealed the defender is pursuing interests outside of football.

The 34-year-old, whose contract with the Saddlers expires tomorrow, is debating whether or not to hang up his boots despite the offer of a one-year extension on the table.

James' decision won't impact the future of twin brother Adam though, with the Saddlers captain penning a new one-year deal with Dean Smith's side yesterday afternoon.

"The situation with James Chambers is a strange one," Smith said.

"Adam has agreed his deal but James has got an interest away from football and that has deterred him from signing.

"I've told James the club can't just be sitting around waiting for him, we have to move forward.

"It's still an ongoing thing but it means now I'm out there looking for another centre-back."

Despite James' future being uncertain, Smith is delighted to have retained the services of Adam who has made more than 180 appearances for the Saddlers since signing from Leyton Orient in the summer of 2011.

"I'm delighted that Adam has agreed to extend his stay with us," Smith said.

"It was never in any doubt.

"The only reason it has taken so long is that our holidays meant that we kept missing each other.

"Adam and I go back a long way, the type of player and person he is fits perfectly into the way we try to do things here.

"He's fully committed to the cause and leads by example. He has a phenomenal work ethic, something which the other lads can only learn from.

"He has been a big influence here in recent seasons and I am pleased that this will continue into the new campaign."
