The 21-year-old trickster made a big impression for the Saddlers towards the end of last season after returning from a loan spell in non-league with Wrexham.

Morris started Walsall's last eight games, scoring two goals in the process – a run of form which prompted Smith to offer him a new two-year-deal.

But the manager has now warned Morris there is a lot of hard work ahead if he is going to fulfil his potential.

Smith said: "Over the later games at Wrexham, Kieron was becoming more consistent so that was why I brought him back and chucked him straight in.

"He never let himself down and, most importantly, he became trustworthy. That was my big thing with him before, could I trust him?

"But he became trustworthy and earned his two-year deal. The key for him, and we've kept on to him through the close season, is to make sure the hard work is still there.

"It's hard enough to earn a contract, he has had six-month deals and now has a two-year deal.

"If he wants to keep improving he needs to look after himself during the close season and be ready to get straight into the starting line-up."
