The 26-year-old is set to move elsewhere, after turning down the offer of a new two-year contract at the Banks's Stadium.

A brief statement from the club said: "We are disappointed that, despite contract negotiations beginning during the autumn with an initial contract offer made in November, Richard believes his future lies elsewhere.

"However, we do wish him all the best in the future and thank him for his efforts during his time here at Banks's Stadium."

The goalkeeper took to Twitter almost immediately to thank the club and insists his decision was not based on money.

O’Donnell had been a virtual ever-present since joining the Saddlers as a free agent in 2013, making 105 consecutive appearances before being dropped for the final two games of the season.

His future has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks after talks on a new deal stalled.

Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers and Nottingham Forest have all been touted as possible destinations, with Rovers boss Paul Dickov confirming his interest in the shot-stopper.

Dickov admitted the Saddlers Player of the Season is someone they’ve had their eye on “for some time.”

He said: “Richard is a good goalkeeper. He is someone we have watched and had an eye on for a long time.

“Because he is out of contract there will be a lot of clubs looking at him like we have over the past season. He is one that is on our list, yes.”

Dickov, who released Rovers No 1 Stephen Bywater earlier this week, is keeping his options open with regard to a new signing.

But O’Donnell would be viewed as an upgrade, while Doncaster might also be a tempting destination for the keeper, being far closer to his Sheffield home.

O’Donnell also remains close friends with former Walsall defender Andy Butler, who now plays at the Keepmoat Stadium.
