The Posh currently occupy the coveted sixth spot and have two games in hand over the chasing pack, with the Saddlers among those sides ready to pounce should they slip up.

Dean Smith’s side currently sit two places and two points behind in eighth.

Peterborough, who won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Sunday, could extend their advantage when they host Colchester tomorrow night.

But O’Donnell believes winning games in hand will be easier said than done.

“They have got to go and win those games and they have had a lot of them in a short space of time,” he said.

“They played Sunday and again on Wednesday. From our point of view, it’s hard not to look at the league because that is where we want to be. We took another good step on Saturday to achieve that.”

The weekend victory over Shrewsbury extended Saddlers’ unbeaten run to five games and saw them record back-to-back wins for the first time since December.

“We are undefeated in five now and we have a bit of momentum and hopefully that will stand us in good stead going forward,” added O’Donnell.

“We want to get as many wins as we can out of the last six games and we’ll see where it takes us.”

He added: “Throughout the ten game spell when we didn’t win we kept the belief that the win was just around the corner and I think that was important.”

The Saddlers will be looking for more success against Shrewsbury this afternoon when their reserve sides clash at Chasetown’s Scholars Ground (kick-off 2pm).
