Craig Westcarr today penned a deal with Walsall until the end of the season as a free agent.

moreThe forward had been training with the Saddlers after leaving Chesterfield by mutual consent earlier this month.

He played eight games on loan, without scoring, at the Banks's Stadium before his deal expired after the 2-0 win over Portsmouth three weeks ago.

Boss Dean Smith had been confident of sealing a deal for the 28-year-old and he is available for Saturday's visit of Oldham.

He said: "I'm pleased to have signed this deal and now I just want to settle down and concentrate on my football.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge. Since the very first day I arrived here, this club has always been a perfect fit for me and I believe that I can really progress here."

Former Nottingham Forest starlet Westcarr could be the Saddlers' last signing before Thursday's transfer deadline.

Walsall can still sign free agents and loanees outside the window but boss Smith is wary of upsetting the squad's dynamic.

He said: "We've been out there looking and I've got some names on the list but don't want to change too much at the moment because things are going OK."
