Sam Mantom today insisted Walsall can maintain their red-hot form and confound the critics.

moreThe Saddlers' stunning run has fired them from sixth bottom to just five points off the top six ahead of today's trip to Colchester.

Six wins from seven games has propelled them to 10th in League One and Mantom insisted it can continue.

"The gaffer knows what we can do and we know what he wants so if we keep doing the right things there's no reason why we can't get higher," he said.

"We're not going to get carried away, teams have a few games in hand but we'd rather have the points on the board. It's a good achievement for this time of the season.

"We're building the gap over Shrewsbury who are in 18th and that's important.

"We'll keep training properly and if we keep playing right and training right there's no reason why we can't keep winning."

Mantom was tipped as a future captain by boss Dean Smith last week and the former Albion midfielder, who joined the Saddlers permanently this month, admitted he was shocked but would be delighted with the honour.

He added: "I was surprised to see that but if it comes up then I'll certainly try to take it."
