Smith will trust stars on Twitter comments

Dean Smith today insisted he trusts his men to act responsibly and drew a line under Walsall’s Twitter troubles.

The boss believes his squad will learn after Manny Smith made homophobic comments to fan Kevin Paddock on Twitter.

Defender Smith, who was again left out of the squad for footballing reasons for Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Scunthorpe, made a public apology and has been disciplined by the club.

The FA are still investigating the episode but Smith is confident it will not happen again.

He said: “I think just the publicity itself has reminded the players.

“They all know what their responsibilities are and we’ve dealt with the situation internally.”

Smith had been dropped for the 2-0 win over Wycombe before boss Smith was aware of the incident.

He kept the same back four in Tuesday’s Glanford Park victory and praised them after consecutive clean sheets.

He added: “I thought Olly (Lancashire) and Buts (Andy Butler) handled them really well, Richard Taundry slotted in at right-back well and Mat Sadler too. David Grof made some important saves so we’ve got to keep going.”

Meanwhile, the club handed a trial to midfielder Markus Juric in yesterday’s 1-1 reserve team draw with Port Vale which saw Ryan Jarvis equalise.

And the second string clash with Sheffield United which was called off this month at the Banks’s Stadium will now be played on Monday, February 27 (2pm).
